This is the 2nd part (and completion) of our series in converting our Maverick XL cargo box into a Maverick XLT cargo box. We sourced our own cheap D-Ring style tie downs for the bed of the Maverick instead of paying over $100 for the stock parts.
For this build #ad
Keeper D-Ring Anchors: amzn.to/3jOgC0w
Bolts M8 1.25 x 25mm Flange Hex Bolts: amzn.to/3Xk5fLF
T-Handle Tap Wrench to wrench the tap: amzn.to/3wXTijW
M8-1.25 Tap: amzn.to/3jUd0Ks
Cutting/Tapping Oil: amzn.to/3xjQQo0
Optional (as used in the video as a "backup tap wrench", also comes with its own set of taps, but not top tier quality. However, it saved us for the day):
amzn.to/3Ig5wdd
Other Tools and Accessories I use:
OBDLINK MX+: amzn.to/3TBegiY
Rode VideoMic I Use on DSLR: amzn.to/3RcbGit
Some of the shots are filmed on this camera: amzn.to/3XJXqju
(or my iPhone)
Camera Tripod: amzn.to/3WR4RUt
Mini tripod for low and tight shots: amzn.to/3xjSTsc

Nice add on for the XL........I sure wished there was a stainless steel option, but I haven't found any yet with a 1.75 hole spacing.

If you have a steady hand, you can tap using a cordless drill. I do it occasionally at work. As long as there is nothing behind that hole to collide with, you'll be more safe. Go slow and steady to win the race. Good video.

I really wanted to do this, but was unsure if this was the norm for people who do this more often haha

Side note, now that I am re-watching the video, it looks like I used the cheap tap that came with the amazon tap wrench. It would probably be a lot smoother cut if using the better tap. amzn.to/3jUd0Ks

Do you need to do anything to the tthreaded holes to protect from rust?

The tap you link is too large for the tap wrench you linked. That was extremely annoying to find out.

Does the stock d-ring use the same 6mm screws that the other tie-downs used? That's probably why you're struggling with an 8mm tap.
@DRLeisy
@DRLeisy 8 ай бұрын
No. Dring uses 8mm... others use 6mm

As a machinist , I tap with a drill every day. And always use oil.

That has been a lingering question in my head for a while "if experts can just do this with a drill" haha. Thank you for answering it for me!

@@maverickresource Also use a proper oil. WD40 isn't oil exactly.

You used a 6mm on the side tie down and an 8mm on the bottom. Why not 6mm on the bottom?
@maverickresource
@maverickresource 8 ай бұрын
The 6mm would just fall into the existing holes (if I remember correctly). In other words, the existing wholes on the bottom tie down area are larger.

Serious question because I cant remember. Wasnt the first recall from the spray in bed liner guys screwing the anchor bolts down into the gas tank? It doesnt really make sense but I am too lazy to go on the forum and check. But as I was watching you tap with that Chinese tap......and u went deeper and deeper......Im thinkin'.......do u smell gas? Hope not.....Im sure I have it all assbackwards as usual
@maverickresource
@maverickresource Жыл бұрын
No it wasnt. The first recall was due to the guys drilling the "drain holes" up at the top of the bed too deep. As for tapping the existing holes, you can literally look through the holes and see where you are going. There isnt a risk with these holes...

Paints the D-ring assembly but doesn't paint the bolts...or get black bolts.

Got over it as soon as I saw how fast the paint will pop off the D rings...not that it is really needed anyway

Don't know what you are referencing, but the "holes" are already there. There is no drilling needed.
