Interesting concept but I believe using 2x12, while more work, is a better choice of wood. First a 2x12 has to be cut from much older trees. Therefore it is more stable than a 2x4 or even a 4x4 that are cut from younger trees. Second, after cutting a part to length, you will rip it into several boards. Therefore, you get much better use out of the linear board length. Third, laminating the 1.5x3.5 inch cut boards not increases the strength by alternating growth patterns, the same reason manufactured wood is more stable. But it also allows you to use tenons and mortise construction by simply cutting the pieces to proper length to assemble in an overlapping fashion.

Would you say the overall height is the standard height for typical benches ? How does this bench perform under high loading ?
@aaronfixesstuff
@aaronfixesstuff 4 жыл бұрын
Jaysen Zapata I would say it’s about the same height. I’m 5’9 and when I use it, my feet are planted on the ground. As far as high loads, I didn’t make any really heavy weights to test it on. I’d say that the weakest part is the swing arms, and I put a piece of 2x4 in between the frame and backrest for added support.

How is the MDF holding up? Once it gets wet from sweat it will swell and flake. Did you paint it? It’s also much heavier than ply. I’m building one to be portable as well as collapsible so will go with lighter pine ply and put a fins h sealer on it. I understand it’s more expensive. I may go with a through mortise and tenon joint to fix the legs to base, then secure with 3/8” carriage bolt and wing nut for tooled removal (instead of collapsing). No tension rod or other stabilizer necessary. Lastly, I understand how you came up with 13” length on the cross legs - it’s what was left over. Is it enough? Is it stable. Most benches would be 24” ish

Thanks for the build but my only question is where do I place the legs on the 45inch piece. Like how many inches from each side

Question: What is the piece of wood between the two bases that stretch through the entire bench? Wouldn't that make the bench not foldable anymore?
@aaronfixesstuff
@aaronfixesstuff 4 жыл бұрын
I only put that for safety when using the bench to prevent it from collapsing.

This looks ideal for tall people. I cannot find a decent length workout bench for sale anywhere.

It would be far better if you made the short part of the bench to have the same movement as the longest part which you lift up in different % of angle as well. This way when you sit on the bench doing shoulders or inclined chest press you will not slip . Good job. 👌

I thought about that, but I was worried that it would be too complicated to make. Maybe an idea for a different video. Thanks for watching :)

I guess I forget my good fortune. I live in Houston, Texas. There’s tons of room here. And more trucks and SUVs combined than cars. Seems like garages and tools are a must here. I’ve amassed a garage full of both mechanical and builder’s tools. I forget not everyone has the means or space to build things in their residence. Great vid.
