I just got the pack of the condiment cups from Walmart. I got the 4oz mason jars but they're harder to work with in my opinion. I did the "no pour" with the mason jars. With the plastic cups, I am going to use a lab flask to PC the agar, then cool it in a water bath (sous vide) pot set at 151f to get to cooling temp. I may eventually get the nicer PP5 containers to try. Great subject.
@KitchenMycology Жыл бұрын
Yes. I like the "No Pour" method because they're no exposed to the air. You can let them cool down in the PC for a while and then take them out and tighten the lids even before you peel off the foil. I think the PP5 Cups are worth the money but you can use the other cups as well - the ones that don't melt. 😜
@MostWantedOHA3 ай бұрын
you wont need a bath to cool the agar it cools pretty quick , i try to pour around 140 , also if you stack the poured dishes you will rid most of the condensation or even place a cup w/ hot h2o on a condensed dish and the cond. will be rid of . Enjoy !!! Cheers !!!

This isn't relevant, but up till now, all I had was an EZPot knockoff to PC. My FIL just gave me a pressure canner that has been in the family since 1964 (that the date on the manual he has for it.) Its a 21 quart Sears and Roebuck pressure canner with a weight and a pressure valve. I stepped up in to the big leagues now. If I understand correctly, there are 2 more canners that I am going to get from him when he finds them. One is reported to be an All American electric 23 quart canner/autoclave.

I don't think Acrylic will work in a PC. They tend to be brittle. PP5 is flexible. As you can see in the video, these PP5 (Polypropylene) cups are safe to pressure cook. I PC them for 30 minutes. I've used them for a while now over and over with great results.

Dear @KitchenMycology , When you're cultivating agar, do you store your PP5 petris with the lids screwed completely, or are they partially open for airflow? Thank you.

I screw them tight (closed all the way) since I pull them out of the Pressure Cooker. Then store them face down as soon as the Agar is solid.

For the larger PP5 containers, I'm guessing you have to unscrew it slightly before leaving it upsidedown to release condensation? Should I leave them just on the countertop until then or should I be storing it in a larger plastic tote to prevent contamination from entering? Also, how long does it take normally for the condensation to go away?
@KitchenMycology Жыл бұрын
Yes. Screw the PP5 lids tight. Leave them upside and all condensation goes away in about 3 days. These lids are airtight so I leave them in a closet shelf. The other two, I put inside a small Ziploc bag. (Plastic container is fine). If you're not going to use fr awhile put them in the fridge and they'll last a while. Youll get some cnsendarion back in the fridge.
@SilencedByYoutube Жыл бұрын
@@KitchenMycology Oh so the condensation doesn't leave the container it just gets reabsorbed into the agar? Since it's airtight how is the condensation going away if the lid is closed tight?
@KitchenMycology Жыл бұрын
@@SilencedByKZbin That's my theory too: that the humidity gets reabsorbe into the Agar, because I don't think it can escape the closed container. I didn't use to care about condensation since it was always present in the cheap Ketchup Cups, but I noticed that if I didn't put these in the fridge right away, and just left them outside in ambient temperature, the condensation would clear up. So, as aways: Patience for the win! So it's either that, or some magical Alchemical Transmutation going on 😜

Hello again. Since polypropylene survives high temperatures, what about using an oven to sterilize the pre-poured containers instead of a pressure cooker? 250° in the oven for 30 minutes seems more convenient. No? Thank you for your reply.
@KitchenMycology10 ай бұрын
Since the cups have a thin layer of Agar, they don't need much to sterilize - compare it to a big jar full of Agar... I haven't used the oven method so I don't know how long it would take. I have seen videos of people using the oven to sterilize Agar but I can't remember the details. The pressure of the PC is much more effective at sterilizing than the oven.
