A detailed tour of my DIY air conditioning setup for warm weather camping the back of my truck. Summer heat makes it difficult to truck camp in comfort. Adding A/C to your truck can extend your camping season all the way through even the hottest dog days of summer. This is an extremely cost effective, fun project that will make your truck camping adventures much more comfortable.
I used this setup just two weeks ago while truck camping in Death Valley, California. Daytime high temps were 126 degrees and overnight lows were over 100! The air conditioner kept me cool at night while sleeping and served as a refuge from the heat during the day. Video below if you'd like to see that trip.

The person who invents an A/C that can run off one or two 100 watt solar panels will be a billionaire.

For dry climates, if you have a camper top that you don’t care to cut into , cut a hole in the top with weather seal around the hole ,make a mini swamp cooler that blows down into the camper ,it can run one or two solar panels, it’s only a fan and garden pump ,it will take it from 90 or 100 down to 70 and no need to modify the tailgate . You can also install a drain tube on the water tank to drain it when you need to move.Just an idea of something self sustaining and no problems getting in and out of the tail gate.

@@vancey6072 , the once I saw were freakin huge and there was a spare battery pack to buy. Probably be OK if you just need some A/C to fall asleep and let it charge all day, but I bet they are expensive as well.

I did something like this and installed 2 air conditioning units. When one of them is taking a break,,,the other is starting up and pumping out cool air. A con when dealing with window units. Both air-conditioning units are running off from 6000 watt hours of batteries stacked up in the back. Two 400 watt solar panels laid across the top of the camper shell and cab roof. I also used pool noodles sliced down the middle to slide on the window and the plywood to create the barrier this guy made. Works incredibly well

The air conditioner condenser ( portion that removes humidity) works best if your unit is at an angle as opposed to having it at level. Great idea!

I'm a wood worker by hobby and this is an incredible idea buddy!! Ugh!! NOW I can go camping in the summer! I started buying small things to start truck bed camping. But because of family and issues at work I couldn't completely buy everything and camp over the winter here in Texas. With spring and summer coming so quickly I was bummed out. But THIS gives me a perfect reason to finish buying what I need and want. Do a build like yours and buy a small unit like that!! Genius !! Thx so much for sharing!

Love this idea. Very clean. I like the carpeted inside since i have a bed rug already. And what I really like about this setup is I often will be towing my Sea-Doo fish Pro with me to the lake and I'll need to move the truck to load and unload it and I can just leave that air conditioner set up in place because where is it going to go? A strip of velcro between that wood block and that air conditioner also means the block wouldn't go anywhere either. I'm picking up this weekend a camper shell that needs to be re painted to start a build.... I think I'll find me a 110 unit while I'm at it and go ahead and cut the wood and get the false taigate built as I plan on shooting the blue camper shell with black raptor liner and I'll just shoot that wood panel too while im at it and have it black to match my black pickup. 😊

I'm 60 yrs old a bit beat up arthritic but, I think I can pull that setup off . Very nice setup and I liked the Champion generators. For practical reasons, mostly being 38 pounds versus their 4500 which is 98 pounds, it would be easier for most people to move around or easy for two people to lift. And you didn't mention it, but it says in the Amazon description they can be linked to produce 5000 watts. Not a bad generator for the price.

The condensation isn't something I've experienced but it's also very dry here and most places I go. In a more humid environment, there would probably be some. A small drip pan with a train tube would most likely solve this pretty easily, assuming it even becomes an issue. Thanks for watching!

Wow . . . this is a seriously practical build, and very well done. What a great and simple idea. I fish some remote areas of the colorado river and truck camp pulling my boat. Normally by early June, I'm done till the late fall due to the heat. 110+ is very common. The places I camp do not have power, but I do have a Honda Eu2200i that I bring for charging boat batteries. This would be perfect. The problem currently for me is that the night time heat often stays around 100 at night, which I have a difficult time sleeping in. Even if I could bring the temp down in my shell at night to the upper 70's , that would be a DREAM. Thank you for an excellent, well presented video. Awesome.

Absolutely brilliant solution . There are a couple of decent " portable " units for camping , but at $1,000+ , I will skip them . I can buy a bunch of small window units and plywood for that money . There are also regular portables which run 5 - 8k BTUs which can also work but take up twice the space . They also have exhaust ducts and condensation drains to worry about . I have used one , but , not the best solution really .

If I lived down south where it's hot and humid for longer periods of time, I'd invest in something a little easier than my setup. There is only about a month and a half to two months where I use it out here. Definitely a pretty cost effective option. Thanks for watching!

@@Outside605 No, it's a hybrid, it would run until I run out of gas, and from what others have said it's pretty efficient, a little 120 unit like you have I could run for a whole week, the engine would start for about 50 seconds, charge the battery and then shut off for about 10 or so minutes, depending on the temperature and what setting the AC is on, you have a really good idea, and I'm going to look into building me one. I think the newer trucks have a rounder seal at the back, I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the info.

That is a really great idea! I think that’s one of the best cost efficient and stable mods I’ve seen. Personally, I would do rhino covering on the outside of the frame, but that looks great too. I wonder if there’s a way that you can power the AC from the trucks battery with an inverter without pulling too much power. You might have to have a separate battery plus inverter with maybe a solar charging system? But I’d rather just see if I could make it work off of the trucks alternator. I don’t know enough about electricity to know if it would draw too much current or what the issues could be.
@Outside605
@Outside605 Жыл бұрын
I think you would need a substantial battery bank to run purely off a battery. With new lightweight lithium batteries, a guy could probably do it though with some creativity. I don't have my battery charging from the truck's alternator because I'm unsure how that setup would work with a lithium battery. Thanks for watching!
@adam-newbloom
@adam-newbloom Жыл бұрын
To run one of those units "overnight" you would need 6-8 kilowatts of stored energy. That's a pretty solid battery bank. The Eco-delta Pro are 3.6kw... so two of them would handle overnight.

@@adam-newbloom The Eco in the name is not for economic. I just looked at them to see what you were referring to. $2700 each, and that's on sale? That seems quite a bit of change for a battery and inverter in a pretty box.

Really really like your video I'm exactly thinking about what you're doing I'm going to be heading south and I'll be in a bit smaller truck and Toyota two wheel drive 91 nice little truck like I said small but it still can sleep in it and I can still pack stuff away and I can still put a 5,000 BTU air conditioner and it is well with a small generator but I'm going to have solar as well and about four of the same batteries you're doing anyhow I like what you're doing I'm going to try and watch more of them you do an excellent job thank you very much peace from great state of Montana ✌️✌️🙏🙏🏾🙏🏽🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Brilliant. I have been watching many other channels and wondered why hasn't anyone added a 5,000 btu unit. I do have a question for you please. What about a taller cap cover for your truck? It would give you move room to sit and inside the bed. Love your channel!

Thanks for the kind words. I looked for a taller shell for quite some time. After several months, I found my current shell and it was too good of a deal to pass up. I'm considering a different truck in the future and will definitely look for a taller shell for that one. Any extra space is a real bonus when you consider how small of a space the back of a truck really is. Thanks for watching!

That's funny as hell my friend I'm in a great state of Montana and I'm a little in a Toyota truck and 91 and two wheel drive long box extremely small when you're at 2:20 or better and at 6 ft but the smaller conditioner and a generator working together maybe with some solar panel as well I can I can hack it but thank you it was funny peace my friend 🇺🇸🙏🙏🏾🙏🏽🇺🇸

Thanks for the great video Andy. I'm a recent subscriber. I live in Florida so I will definitely need a/c in my truck camper. This video is just what I needed for that. Question. Do you have a shore power inlet, or do you always run the cords out the back? Thanks again. Mike

Thanks for watching. I do have a power inlet on my new build but it's really just for charging the battery. It's a Noco brand, very good quality. Welcome aboard.

I would put a carbon monoxide detector inside your sleeping area for the times when you are running your generator especially on still nights. We had trouble with CO getting into our travel trailer on still nights running our gen.

I built a shelf that is parallel height to the window sliders, do you think if I cut out the mesh screen and stuck the ac out of the window it would work efficiently? I planned to use a long piece of wood to hold it from falling out. I tried simply placing it on the shelf with the window open, it blew cold but i could also feel the hot air.

I have 2006 Dodge caravan. The back opens straight up. Let me pick your brain a minute. I live outside Houston. This has been the hottest summer in 5 decades. It's like I am melting and the bumpy is so thick you could drink it. What are the chances of building a tail gate board like you did but, put it inside the van and being able to close the door onto the board which will give plenty of ventilation for the a.c.? Did you do your build out of 1x2's or 2x2's along with the plyboard. Where did you get the gray carpeting? You opened an exciting door for me wanting an AC which also can get one that has heating too. Thank you for your video.

You want 2x2 and can use a fold down shelf bracket to help hold the weight. Come in like 8" 12" etc. Yes you can do it

Hello, great video, are you able to plug it into a cigarette lighter? Or a acdc inverter?
@Outside605

I really only run it off of the generator or shore power. It would require a massive battery bank and a large inverter to run for any significant amount of time. Thanks for watching.

i wonder where and how you store that "temp" door when driving - just in the camper? And once set up to run the AC, is this door somehow locked or secured so that no one (or animal) can break in easily?

How many watts would that pull out of electric power station say a 1300wh unit ? How long could you run the AC ?

I can't argue with that. The reason I have a 2500w unit is because I use it for multiple things at a time. The biggest is running the air while also charging 4 deep cycle boat batteries at the same time. Thanks for watching.
