Suggestions: Add drawer slides with a wood shelf to mount the AC on so it just slides in and out. This way you can still close the tailgate when driving. The extra board from the cut out can be held in place with simple flat flip locking latches put either on the outside or inside or both for security. If you build it a bit differently you can keep the board at the back in almost permanently instead of taking it in and out all the time by just moving it back a few inches making less to do in setup. Having the back board removable allows to use the truck for it's normal purposes when needed.

Hi, I just purchased a GMC SLT with the 5’-8” bed and the new folding tailgate (it is growing on me). My ARE topper is the height of the cab because of my garage door. Thought of trying to find an AC unit that is 11-1/2” or less to put in a side window for security reasons. Questions: what do you think of having an AC unit with a heater? Where can I find a short enough unit to fit the window? If the AC is mounted through a sheet of plywood how is the plywood mounted inside the bed using flaps? Do you have pictures? Like the idea of mounting the ac unit on slides with the board inside. With this method one could shut the tail gate when hiking and feel the truck is secure. Thanks the frugal traveler

Hey thanks a lot! This is an easy build and yes a 2000 watt Honda generator runs a small AC unit very easily and quietly. If you insulate the shell and bed better than what I did it would also help. I also try to park in the shade or under my DIY tarp canopy. Good luck!

I just bought a new truck and order a camper shell. I plan to do this same thing! My wife and I like to jet ski but we live in Texas. We'd love to be able to camp and visit lakes that aren't that close. This way we can just get a camp site with electricity and finally can sleep comfortably in summer. It's going to be very helpful!

I love how you made that work. I have an F150 4x4 with a 6.5 ft bed that I am looking for a Jason hi top camper shell for (used of course). I like your idea, but I never go camping solo, my wife will be with me. Trying to figure out a way to rig something like this that will hold the AC up above the sleeping platform. The design kind of has to be a platform to carry my other camping stuff, including water, camp toilet etc... under the bed while in transit. Oh and totally jealous of the Honda Generator. Mine is just one of those ultra cheap Harbor Freight Tailgators...

The Harbor Freight generator should run the AC....my AC only pulls around 5 amps I think. When my wife goes with me I have to sleep on the floor...LOL! Maybe you can make 2 side by side panels for the end. Use one as a door and have the other hold the AC up high? Good luck and Thanks!

I'll add a note on this type of setup, I've recently built something similar and theres one thing I'd recommend. Make yourself some kind of deflector to aim the cold air towards the ceiling, I made one out of cardboard. The reason for this is hot air rises and stays there, meaning if you're up in your bed on a hot night trying to sleep, all of the cold air will tend to stay on the bottom of the bed and not do much good for you. This change has helped out quite a bit.

thats great to see considering you dont have much for insulation in a truck bed,,soon as the a/c goes off your gonna heat up so quick. My set up is in a home built 4x8 squaredrop camper completely insulated 2 inch foam including the ceiling. I run same 5k frigidaire unit but mine shuts off when it reaches temp you set it at. My a/c takes near 30 min to cool just as you posted in this video,,but after initial cooling my a/c only runs for 1 minute every 15 min to keep temp,,thats the advantage of having something insulated well to keep cool

Sounds like you did it right. I really need more insulation for sure. I always try to park in shade or under the canopy. I also started covering the shell with a tarp made out of a three layer reflective material. Thanks for the info!

Tailgate stays closed while traveling. All the gear packs in the back and behind the front seats. The plywood panel is stored under my mattress. If I set everything up it will take around an hour. There is not much insulation so if it is hot and sunny it doesn't take long....in a matter of a few minutes it will heat back up on a sunny day. That's why I try to park in shade and also use the tarp and reflective cover to help stay cool. Thanks!

I wonder how difficult it would be to split the unit and mount the compressor and condenser under the truck with the fan and heat exchanger inside the camper. I'm assuming the motor that runs the fan blower for pulling air across the heat exchanger is the same that runs the fan for the condenser?

I visit friends in AZ and NM so I know what you mean. I think you definitely need to insulate the shell. A little bit of Reflectix (from Lowes or Home Depot) will do wonders. I even have Reflectix panels cut out to cover the top and side windows. Sometimes I back under a pop up canopy or a DIY tarp canopy for shade. You can see the canopy I use in my other videos like this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4XNnIGqqdyKndU. Maybe check out radiantbarrier.com for some ideas. I have used their "Temptrol" material on the outside of a pop up camper. Hope this helps. Thank you!

Around 8 hours. Outdoor temps usually drop enough at night to shut it down before it runs out of gas, then I just run a fan off battery. Generator pretty much idles with AC running. Great for an afternoon cool down or nap! Thanks!

When and if I get a camper top, I want to get one of those fans you put in the cieling. I don't understand why anyone hasn't done that. With a small space and plenty of windows for ventilation, it would work great. I think anyway. I think the ac is a great idea but I would start with the fan first. Have not ever thought to do that?? I heat up shell before sleeping then shut down heter and crawl in a good sleeping bag. Heater is a bit much even on low. I think it's safe plus I have smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Thanks!

Put a start capacitor on the ac unit. They are cheap (Amazon) and easy to install. You will use less gas and put less strain on the generator. There is some videos on KZbin about them. I like the idea here very clever but simple . my question is how well does. It work in the rain ?

The capacitor would be good for my larger 13,500 BTU AC unit on my pull behind camper. The little 5000 BTU unit for the truck shell pulls very little amperage. The Honda generator stays at idle in "eco" mode even when the compressor kicks in. The AC unit is a window unit and is made to be exposed to the rain and elements. The biggest concern when it rains is keeping the generator dry. Thank you for some good suggestions and comments.

Any harm in using existing AC ducts from the truck's factory AC system and routing a duct into the back? How much extra gas would you use with your engine idling? Heat and AC both. Or is it bad for the engine? Just asking as I'm not very familiar with any of this and it seems quite a lot of work. Plus the generator uses gas as well.

I don't recommend using the vehicle's AC and heater to heat the shell. The Honda generator is very good on fuel use. A portable propane heater or a diesel heater are options to consider for heating.

I’m getting my new truck and A.R.E. topper next month or so, and I have been going schizophrenic thinking of how to do my AC. South Florida here, so it’s AC or death. Yes, that Frigidaire is the smallest and lightest one available, and I’ll also be running it off a 2000 Predator inverter, although I have two which I can run in parallel, or series, whatever they call it. You got it done, but you were working with your free, existing topper. Since I’m ordering new, there has to be an easier, cleaner way to do this, so this is my plan: My indoor cabinetry runs the left length of the bed, and the forward left to right. The left run is for kitchen, storage, etc., and the forward horizontal run is my bed. (I’m a short guy who can easily fit sleeping in that direction.) So on my right/passenger side, I plan to build a small piece of cabinetry just to cover the wheel wheel, and figure out my window configuration so I can secure the AC onto the cabinet and stick it out the WINDOW. Of course, just when I get to the site; not driving like that. Heck, I might even order the topper WITHOUT a window in that portion of the topper side, do my own cut into the topper, and figure out an acceptable sealing solution when not installed. And even if installed through a window with gaps, there must be a flexible blanketing solution to achieve an acceptable seal: Although my bed is 8’, your topper is exceptionally taller. And if you got your results with that little AC, I’m sure I can achieve more than satisfactory less with less than perfect air sealing.

I have a few crazy ideas but it would be nice to use the new shell as is and make a removable rubber boot or fiberglass mold to fit/seal between (and around) the AC and window opening. You will also need to insulate the inside shell in some way. Park in shade when possible (of course) and parking under a pop up canopy or tarp will make a huge difference. I sure would like to know what you come up with.

I did the same thing after seeing your video but had a strange issue. Have you ever felt terrible after sleeping in there for a few hours? I put a 5000 BTU on my truck using a very similar method. My wife and I were sleeping in there at the lake, plugged into the camp site's electric, so no exhaust or generator. About 3 hours in, I got a horrible headache. So bad, that I had to pack up and leave at 1am. My headache was so bad I could barely get home successfully, it was easily the worst I've ever had. My wife felt mostly fine so we assume it was a fluke. We went out again, this time we were much farther from home so going home wasn't an option. About 2 hours in, we both started getting headaches. We tried opening the windows a little to see if it we werent getting enough fresh air. We opened the windows more and it seemed to make us feel better. But, the hot humid Texas air made it feel freezing inside while the compressor was running and when it turned off, we were miserable from the muggy weather lol. I'm baffled by this issue. I was really excited about this set up since we have jet skis and love to camp at the lake but don't want to sweat to death when its 85 at night lol. Any ideas?

I first was thinking maybe it was a residual exhaust leak because I've read that a warning sign of Carbon Monoxide poisoning it that it gives you a headache like that. But It didn't affect your wife. When I used to work in a restaurant, I would have to constantly enter a walk in fridge and come out to a hot kitchen. It gave me a horrible headache but didn't affect everybody the same.

A 48v. 100 amps lifepo4 battery which you can keep inside the shell and a 48v. inverter will run that little a/c in low for 12 hours or in hi for 6 , and you don’t have to worry about gas, noise or getting that generator stolen. Just an opinion so something to think about it

Since 48v are super pricey, get yourself at least 200 to 300 amps on 12v so you’ll have more than less because 100 amps is not much if you want to use your microwave. Trust me is worth it.

I reinforced it with a piece of flat aluminum where the wood gets narrow below the little door. I also keep the door latched to add stability when moving it around.

Shell was made in the 80's by a company that is now out of business. I covered up the information plate on the inside with Reflectix. I think it was called "Tri" something. The writing on the outside is just a dealership. Thanks!

Thanks for making this video. I just might use your idea when I build my topper. Would the temperature get down into the 70's if the fan speed was on low? With the fan on high, I might not be able to sleep because of the noise. Will your Honda generator power this all night on a tank of gas? all day? Do you have to fill up before bed time to make sure it lasts through the night? How long is the power cord to the generator...therefore, how far away is the gen, and can you hear it running inside? I saw a hole in your truck bed liner...is that how you get the power cord inside to the AC unit? Thanks again.

When the fan speed is lower, the air is actually a bit cooler coming out of an AC. The higher fan speed gets the air moving in the room. When I did the test I could reach 70's easy on low. There are some variables to consider like what the outside temp is, are you parked in the shade, how well is the topper insulated, etc. The Honda generator runs close to idle speed and will last 7 or 8 hours before running out of gas. I usually don't run it that long. There are kits on Ebay that add an external gas can to the Honda for longer runs. I always take a heavy duty 50 ft ext cord and can't hear the generator that far away from inside. The holes in the bed liner are to access anchor points for tie down straps when I have the topper off and haul things. Thank you for asking. Let me know how I can help.

@@David-rx2to I want to keep the back glass as is. I'ts a great window while inside the shell. Leaving the tail gate down gives me an extra table and doesn't require any modifications. The AC is easily installed and supported by the tail gate and doesn't drip condensation by design so it doesn't make a wet mess. I only had to make the simple plywood panel which stays in place, is easily removed, and makes a good door so I don't have to step over the tailgate. That AC is a little heavy and awkward to lift. I wouldn't want to lift it up high and then support it some way at the correct angle. I say keep it simple and easy! Hope this helps.

It has a "slinger" type fan inside that picks up the pooled up water and slings it on the hot components inside the unit. This cools the internal parts and gets rid of the water at the same time. Some make the mistake of drilling a hole in the frame to drain the water which ruins the design. There is no water mess dripping from the unit but I have to be careful when I pack it back up because there is a pool of water left inside the bottom of the AC. I have to tip it to one side and let it drain before packing away.

There are portable A/C units that roll on casters and have a hose that vents to the outside. The footprint is small but takes up space in a truck bed.

The plywood panel is only 1/4" thick. It's a little flimsy but easy to carry and store under the mattress. I could have used thicker wood and cut out a little on the ends where the gap is narrow but I already had the 1/4". I had to add a short piece of aluminum plate on the bottom under the door to reinforce it because it got pretty thin. The foam board insulation also helps keep it from flexing. Thanks.

It seems Keith likes to keep things simple as I do. He said his Honda generator only uses a gallon of gas to keep the AC running at night. Thats less than $3.00 for a million dollars worth of comfort. I presume he is not hanging out inside the truck bed during the day and the generator can be used for other purposes. One could also use a portable AC unit that collects the condensation and will shutoff when the water drawer is filled. If you don't mind waking up once or twice in the night you get free water for bathing purposes.

Most of my trips are for only 2 or 3 nights. I mainly only run the AC at night to sleep comfortable during hot /humid weather and usually shut it down during the cooler part of the night. The generator runs 8 hours on a tank of gas and I carry extra gas in a gas can. I can always drive to the gas station and purchase more gas. Hope this helps. Thanks for asking.
