Perfect. Finally I get how this Rube Goldberg contraption of a foam gun operates. It used to be impenetrable mystery, attention diverted to 1/4 to 3/8 reductions and similar "essentials". Now I can make my own, finally getting it. The fast connectors look like life savers.

Pro tip 1: Push fittings instead of garden fittings. They are faster to connect/disconnect, don't leak at all, and hold more pressure; and 2 for the countries that do not have 7th gen dish soap, seek out the active ingredient that makes the bubbles. i.e. SLSA or Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate from a chemical supplier, which is a foaming agent. It's good because no colourings or smelly additives. Just tight froth.

@JonWasBored

I haven't sealed up what I can seal - but at the end of the day - it's not that big of a problem. Maybe get some soap on your shoes, but this is a messy affair no matter how leakproof your foam gun is. I built mine with ease of construction in mind - meaning... you don't have to be very precise with taps for threading things and you don't have to have a very heavy (and small) PVC pressurized chamber for the soap mix. And I think I accomplished that - and it makes FOAM like a MF'er. So ... proof is in the pudding in my mind. But again - make one better! We'll all copy it. Thanks for your comments.

It would be pretty cheap to put a regulator on the air supply to the jug and keep a known constant pressure there. You can find on amazon for about 6.00 and up. Also you can get brass bulkhead fitting for the hole in jug you drilled would be more solid connection. Just drop the threaded piece in through the big hole and move jug around till you can pull it through small hole. Might have to build one of these.

I can't help feeling that a second gun could be invented to mix the water-cement slurry with compressed air, and then combine-mix that with this foam. The end jet would then spray out the final, desired product - aircrete! Now, there's a design challenge! A new range of construction possibilities could open up, such as making wire mesh shapes - a dome, maybe - and spraying aircrete directly onto it.
@JonWasBored
@JonWasBored 5 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. Challenge being considered :) ... domegaia actually has a pvc shaft running down his mixer which pushes the foam directly into the slurry while mixing. Saves a little trouble ... but not an instant mix like you describe.
@sugitox9864

JonWasBored - By the way - as I understand it, your foam gun uses air pressure fed to a pressurised shampoo container to pump the shampoo into the gun. Have you already tried the simpler arrangement of just sucking it up with the gun's existing airflow? (Venturi effect) Fast air-flow creates a powerful vacuum in any side-tube at right angles to it. It can suck up paint, thick automotive underseal, and even grit in shot-blasters - so why not shampoo? You'd just need to add a short metal tube between your air line and the foam-gun. Another metal tube, welded to the middle of that tube at right angles) could suck up your shampoo, and the air flow will blast it into the gun. Attaching the shampoo input to the wider, gun-body would not work (I don't think), because in the wider tube the airflow has slowed down, and it's less able to create a vacuum. With this system, your shampoo container need not be pressurised. In fact, it *must* have an opening to allow air in. Looking at it another way, the earth's atmospheric pressure into the container will be pushing the shampoo into the gun, at a low-pressure point created by the Venturi effect.
@JonWasBored
@JonWasBored 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah. In the video I mentioned I tried a Venturi valve first. I could never regulate the pressure enough to keep air from blowing OUT all the valves. It would work in theory (and another guy has a video that uses that principle which is what got me started building in the first place) - but it takes a bit more engineering than I wanted to try to figure out. But hey, build one and show us how it’s done. I was going for the simplest build I could come up with. My build is simple (in my opinion) because it only requires you to drill two holes and cut one tube into three pieces. The rest is assembly.

Nice job! However, your pro-tip is incorrect. It is the the compressed air that is dangerous in a pressure vessel (your water can isn't really designed to hold pressure).. Water doesn't compress, so the lower the volume of compressed air that you are storing, the better.

Just thinking that a cheaper alternative to the Aquatainer could be your basic 5 gallon bucket with a resealable lid. I bought a Gamma2 "Gamma Seal Lid" from Lowe's for somewhere between $5 and $10, and it says it is airtight. I have no idea how much pressure it could take, but I bet it would be more than the Aquatainer! I haven't tried it yet, but that's on the agenda soon. Since you have to drill a hole and seal up the Aquatainer already, I'd think this wouldn't be that much different. Might have to put it up on blocks and put the holes in the bottom if you don't think you can seal holes drilled on a curved surface, but I'm gonna try to drill on the sides. I suppose I could keep the air connections in the lid as another alternative, but that might make refilling the tank a bit more cumbersome.
@JonWasBored
@JonWasBored 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Bryan. Good idea! One thing to consider is the threading of the rainbird adapters through the bucket material. The plastic of the aquatainer seems a lot more malleable and threadable - that said, you could possibly use a pvc non threaded fitting of some kind and bond the pvc to the bucket.

While your gun works just fine it seems to be no less complicated than any other foam gun on KZbin, and coming in at $100 not the cheapest The simplest foam generator I have seen so far would be the foam generator made with a bucket, T shirt and leaf blower

Adrian - complication is in the eye of the beholder I guess. I designed this thinking about the guy who doesn’t consider himself very precise in engineering. To that end, almost nothing about my build is precise - leaving a lot of margin for sloppy work. Two drill holes. Three cuts with a razor knife and the rest is glue and screw. I’m intrigued about the bucket / T-shirt / leaf blower thing ... post a link!

Tell me if I'm wrong here but back in the day we use to use this stuff we bought at the store that you hooked up the hose to. (A hand held container) that had either soap (!) to spray on the car to wash or a pesticide to spray on the lawn. The container built up pressure and mixed with...and out it came. With a few modifications (we're good at that, aren't we men?) you have the same outcome...right? I'm guessing we need MORE PRESSURE. Right? anyway, Thanks Jon!

I’ve heard others mention that method. One comment said to take a piece of screen mesh and secure it to a paddle mixer on a drill bit. Takes a little longer but should work.

Are there not commercially available foam guns for this purpose that will work? Like the kind you use to foam wash a car. Or is this just how you DIY it if you don't want to buy one?
@JonWasBored
@JonWasBored 4 жыл бұрын
Foam guns at car wash are simply high pressure water/soap solution ... this gun and many other similar use the steel wool to make dense foam that holds up when mixed with the cement slurry. I’ve not seen any commercial versions though there are several DIY guys that sell kits.

Great job! Why is everybody in these videos drilling holes for the hose adapters? You could use threaded adapters and a brass (now they make them out of plastic) barbed adapter such as used with pex or vinyl tubing to make the nozzle for the foam to come out of. To connect a garden hose (or a washing machine hose) there are things called "garden hose adapters"... they have garden hose threads on one end and iron pipe size (IPS) threads on the other end.... sorry, I happen to be a plumber... might even make my own video when I get my aircrete walls and floor building project going in a couple of weeks.
