Problem I ran into with these filters is the AquaClear dumps water into the filter area about halfway up so there's not any flow going into those sponges on the bottom. My answer to this was sticking my first couple of courses of sponge vertical then all my media to The far side and another layer of fine sponge right at the top. And I also tossed that basket out after it floated a few times even with a pound of media in it.

I'm on my 3rd freaking impeller shaft on my Fluval C4 which has the same motor as the Aquaclears, i clean the impeller every time i maintain the filter. The problem is the top of the shaft isn't held by anything causing a vibration which grinds down the metal shaft. This causes noise, Fluval bought Aquaclear designed a new C series filter but never fixed the noisy motor problem.

@davcar8724 жыл бұрын
Your problem is not with the impeller shaft. The stainless steel shaft is designed to tightly sit in the magnetic motor housing as to not move or vibrate negating a top contact point as other filters with ceramic shafts require. It is in there so tight one would need pliers to pull it out. If the shaft moves after installation then your problem is not the shaft but rather the motor housing in which it cannot be repaired and would need replacement. It takes years for the shaft to wear down to the point that the impeller would then start to spin out of balance causing a vibration or rattling noise. If your filter vibrates or makes a noise then the likely cause is a worn impeller shaft or a cracked magnet on the impeller. The shaft is just a few dollars and I tend to replace them every 5-8 years if needed after a thorough inspection. After decades of use, I have yet to replace anything on all my Aquaclears other than the impeller shafts and the o-ring on the motor housing. Fluval didn't buy AquaClear. They are one of the many brands that Hagen Groups owns. Hagen is just integrating AquaClear into the Fluval brand just like they are doing with the Marina brand. The exact same products with new packaging.

@@HaYNFishKeeper Thank you for your reply. Reason I asked is I really plan on pimpin out my Aquaclear 70 and make it a hang on refugium for my 29 gallon saltwater tank. I utilize a course round sponge to cover the intake tube inside the tank to keep snails from getting trapped and plugging up the intake and fish as well. I bought an Intank brand media basket to replace the factory unit. I like how the Intank media basket redirects the waterflow through the Aquaclear. The Intank media basket is slightly taller and has holes to allow water to flow back to into the tank. This will keep the Macro algae contained in the refugium. The media basket is designed to create 3 chambers, for the first chamber I plan on using some Poly filter brand filter media 4 x 8 inch fits perfectly. The Poly filter is great filter media. It removes any metals, Phosphates, detritus, ect. from the water. It also changes color based on what it is pulling out of the water. The second chamber I am going to use your suggestion on the lava rock from Home Depot for the biological media. I think I may rinse and soak the lava rock in some Brightwell Microbacter 7 prior to putting it to work. Third chamber is going to be where I grow macro algae. I am going to mount a Reef Casa Nova refugium light to the backside of the filter housing for photosynthesis to happen and utilize a wifi smart outlet to program and control the refugium light to tune the photo period. I also plan on covering the outside of the Aquaclear HOB with some vinyl wrap to contain the Pinkish purple grow light from spilling into the room. I have built one of these for another tank I have except I utilized the ceramic bio media that comes with the Aquaclear. I like that the lava rock from Home Depot is so cheep for such a large bag. That will surely last quite a while. Thank you for the tip and your quick reply. For my main filtration I utilize a Pimped out Sicce Whale canister filter filled with coarse, medium and filter floss mat in the first tray. Second tray is divided into thirds which contains the bio media the filter came with, Carbon and Zeolite rocks. I consider the cansiter filter basically as l large reactor and pack it full of filter media. Soon I will be installing a UV sterilizer on the return side or may just get another canister with the UV built in. :)

I love fluval filters but that hang on the back model is just too noisy cool upgrades🤘
@davcar8724 жыл бұрын
Hello. If set up properly, there should be no noise or vibrations coming from a new Aquaclear other than the splash from the discharge on a tank with a low water level. I would suggest returning for a new one. I have used Aquaclears for decades and my oldest one is still hanging in there. They can vibrate a bit and make noise but that most likely occurs when the Impeller Shaft wears away after years of use especially if one runs a sand substrate. The first time it happened to me it drove crazy not being able to figure it out. The stainless steel impeller shaft keeps the impeller in its proper place for effective rotation, resulting in a smooth spinning impeller. No more vibrations and rattling noise. Just a few dollars and easy to replace, I keep a couple on hand.

Lobe this video. I used a similar method for a Marineland 350, with it being under $30.00. I discarded the bio wheels and filters and used poly and SBG, I also placed Potho within the confines of the back as well. I have two of these now on a 55 gallon, currently for a Red Devil, although he is around 2.5 inches long, I hope this is enough until I can arrange for a larger tank. Would it be wrong in saying these could provide the same filtration as a Canister? I also run 2 sponge filters with the same on my 75 gallon, although my 75 has 6 Firemouth juvenile and two Jack's, juvenile as well. I added these after my FX4.
