Great idea. One question I have a nano tank that needs a gentle flow. How can I add a sponge to slow down the inflow water? Thanks.
@HaYNFishKeeper5 ай бұрын
You can always add more sponges to reduce the flow or gat a filter with a flow adjuster ♥️🙏🏽🤙🏽💯

I'm at a tipping point with the Bio-wheel. In the 2000s I had a small fish room 5 tanks. I was a huge bio-wheel fanboi, had Marineland filters on every tank. They worked great, don't remember the any real issues, the wheels never stopped unless I neglected cleaning for months. In January 2024 I started into the hobby again, started with a 20 gallon and Marineland Penguin Pro-150. Advertised the "in water pump requiring no priming" plus new "additional media basket" all seemed great, except this filter isn't very reliable. It looks and feels high quality, but the motor occasionally has some issues and makes loud noises for several hours. Sometimes it won't start again when plugged in, only solution being smacking the filter several times and plugging in many times hoping it will start. Priming doesn't help. The biowheel stops all the time. Filter is always back spilling water out around the intake tube. Marineland ain't what it once was. Total shame. I might ditch the wheel as you have.

Bio Media as much as u can if you’re talking about prefilter you have to just gauge it you don’t want back flow so you just try to find that sweet spot

the second way is better water flow through the media is what counts over stuffing your filter it's not good slows down water flow and water can go around some media the bio wheel in my opion does work any time water flows through something it will create bacteria whether bio-wheel bio-falls sponge or other media. It is true if bio-wheel stop spinning it will not work as well although it will have some bacteria on the part of the wheel that is not spinning.Great $$$ saving tips!

Love your style! Thanks for all the new information especially using the pantyhose as a bag. I've been using Aquaclear filters for a long while and when I first got a Marineland, there was no way I'm throwing away my money for those pre-made filter pads. This is the best DIY I've seen to making a Marineland more sustainable and better on the wallet. Curious question, what is your opinion on the Fluval Aquaclear's?

Already have a piece of sponge cut for the reservoir but I’m going to add some ceramic rings under it cause i cut it a bit short. Also i might add the fluval biomax rings to replace the bio wheel. Also thinking of adding a piece of plastic mesh (like a strainer) over the intake part of the reservoir and adding fluval prefilter rings. Not sure if these will be necessary since I already have a prefilter on the intake itself. For that I bought the marineland prefilter and cut the top 1/3 off for the mid level intake and put the other piece on the bottom. This is all on the penguin 200. Though a lot of these mods depend on where the water level sits in the reservoir

Brilliant, since watching your vid, I've installed various versions of filtration as you have recommended and had great results. My only issue is the excess water running down the little shoot at the top next to the intake; how do you eliminate that problem, as water comes down before even entering the filter area. Thanks in advance brother.
@HaYNFishKeeper3 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah that the over flow.. it means you got a little to much filtration maybe ease up on the mechanical like sponges or scrubbies or reduce the amount of poly fill 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽

@@HaYNFishKeeper Sweet, I will do that, keep up the great hacks. I'm working on using 2 inch black pipe to divert the flow off to sides, rather than have the fish water skiing down the middle. Wish me luck😀

One of the 2 filters on my tank is an Emporer 400, which is just double the Penguin. If I did this to mine, would I do both compartments the same? Also, a carbon question: everytime I have not run carbon in my filter, my tank isn't as clear as it is with the carbon. But I probably didn't add enough in it's place. Does the pre-media make up for the carbon? And ngl, I like the sound of my bio wheel, lol. Thanks, man. Another great video.

Clifford Carpenter the cool thing with customizing your HOB filter is that you can make it however you like, u can do one side like the way I did and maybe make it a little different for the other side like maybe more polyfill to polish your water and make it crystal clear or like u said maybe put some polyfill then some bags of carbon mess with it until u find what works for u 🤙🏽🤙🏽

This is great compared to buying filter cartridges but its doing too much for a cheap filter. Don't get me wrong I love marineland, my old bio wheel 100 is over 8 years old and it functions great. I personally skip on the Pre filter, it works great but filter floss is cheap enough that I dont mind swapping it out or rinsing in tank water every 2 weeks during my tank cleaning. For me I run filter floss and fluval biomax its my favorite ceramic media. If the tank has a bit of odor I run carbon in filter media bags but I try not to because I always have the nylon bags fail and carbon leak all over in the water.

You are comparing diy apples to apple sauce. If you are a diy'er, then it makes sense to reuse the blue pads, up to about 3-6 monthse each. As I have been telling my custmomers for 30 years "rinse and reuse the the filter pad until it falls apart". I would say that is the same advice for your pantyhose and hair curlers etc. So that is the comparison. Obviously, the pantyhose have no useful instructions on the box. The "change every 2-4 weeks" does not mean the blue pads are ruined. So please tell people that. the DIYer is a different crowd than "consumers"/ Many people balk when you say "buy a piece of foam and cut it to fit". they have money, they are in a hurry, they aren't biologists or DIYers. They want to name their fish nemo or billy the betta, feed some fancy food for each tyype of fish, and pop in a blue new pad every 2-4 weeks. They know they don't have to...

The first "pimp" is Pointless. The overflow from the intake reservoir to the filter reservoir is raised therefore the "scrubbies" on the bottom never see dirty water. The second "pimp" was much better.
