Hello friends in this video I have made a wire harness tape wrapping machine.
This machine automatically wrap tape on wire harness.
I have used NEMA 17 stepper motor, a custom PCB and Arduino for this project.

@@narcisadrianrus7464 This project does not have that feature though, towards the end of the video you can see the machine stop at different points, there isn't any feedback for the Arduino to know the position of the slot right now either, could easily be added though

'engine harnesses' I looked at doing a fully automated harness maker as far back as the early 1980's, running the steppers on my Commodore 64. The real trick is pulling out each of the wires and stripping and terminating them at the real manufacturer's termination machines, so everything is correct. I could probably do it now and still make some money at it, but the market is actually tiny. By the time you make a machine do it, then a person or two to do testing and fix any minor errors, you can basically just make a harness board and do it all manually with about the same effort. Realize even then there were already machines that cut to length, stripped, and terminated both ends. When you have all the wires for a harness in piles, it's pretty quick to go through the piles grabbing one of each and putting them on a wiring board. So you can make a bunch of harnesses in fairly short order manually, very similar to how they do it in factories, you can find old video of how it was done for ww2 planes etc, even a few car harness videos. Still, I could do it for fun if nothing else, I have a stockpile of 500+ steppers and thousands of microcontrollers on hand. If nothing else it would make some good videos just watching something like that running. HA, someone is making them since 2001. '914/4 Porsche Replacement Wiring Harnesses' Even in the 1980s when I had my 914 the wiring harness was an issue, and they weren't cheap, like $1200. Finding a price now they're '$1,500.00 · ‎In stock'. And of course I'm sure there are other cars with problematic harnesses that could use similar. But still you're competing against a lot of cheap labor that's just doing it manually. Even with a fully automated machine, the idea is a bit more marginal that it seems at first glance.

Too bad engineering skills are shit. Being able to make something as complicated as humanly possibly for no reason does not make you a good engineer, it makes you a bad one . Its absurd to use micro controllers on something that needs maybe 2 or 3 electrical parts TOPs if done right. Idk wtf this is other than overly complex, overly expensive mental masterbation

...Superb project !!!! To add a real professional look to the cable, stop the winder at about 10cm from the USB connector without cutting the tape, shift and hold the USB's cable to the left side and continue wrapping. Once the wraping is complete, reposition the USB to the right and add a few turns of wrapping over the cable.

You could also achieve this with 2 simple switches in parallel. One micro switch running on the rotating section that trips on the opening and a second toggle switch. In parallel they would act as an OR logic gate to turn on and an AND gate to turn off.

Nah, but if he's a typical maker, he's got dozens of arduinos and smaller steppers pilled in the corner. Plus now adding all sorts of features becomes a line of code. Waxed dental floss would be worth a try. Slightly sticky, doesn't fray, and is easy to tie-off.
@rogerrabbit80
@rogerrabbit80 Жыл бұрын
Was thinking that myself - why the Arduino? It's a gadget to wind tape around a bundle of wires! Sure, the Arduino makes it easy to add features, but just what kind of features could you possibly add? Unless you're automating the entire process (set the cables in, push the button, come back when it's done), I can only think of one thing you could add that would be any different than just running a motor with a simple foot switch. That would be a sensor to stop the winder when it's in position to insert or remove the cables. Of course, if you're using the variable speed like an old sewing machine pedal provided, you wouldn't really need that.

It is overcomplicated. Since you use an Arduino board (which you don't need; there are other stepper controllers on the market) to spin that motor, you could make it stop in the exact same position every time you press that switch. Just count the pulses you send to the motor for a ful turn (360⁰) and use that information to make it stop in the same convenient position. Just a free idea to think about.

@ve2zzz

@@brucelytle1144 Exactly. And since a stepper motor is used, when the footswitch is released, have the Arduino slow-down the stepper until the winder's mouth aligns with the support's. A magnet / reed switch combo would be perfect. The sensor may also allow the addition of a counter...

or you could just use a brushed dc motor with a limit switch in parallel with a double-throw foot switch. Let the limit switch ride on a cam, and when you let off the foot switch, the cam can be timed to open the limit switch such that the gap moving piece aligns with the opening in the frame. The throw on the footswitch that provided power to the motor opens and simultaneously closes the throw that shorts the motor back-emf through the footswitch for a braking effect. no solid state electronics required.

I'm going to make me one of these. What part does the printed circuit board play in all of that? There's enough circuitry there to make a ham radio! Surely it doesn't play a part in that operation! Something you could add would be a trough on each side of the machine, to lay your wire in, to keep it centered, because if the harness gets into the opening of the C, it would make a BIG mess!
