As a Washington State REALTOR®, I can sell you a house, but who are we kidding...It's not a home until you have an at-home golf driving range. So, to inspire you to build your own, here is a general guide on how I made mine. Enjoy!

Golf Mat (UPDATE 10/25/2020 - The current price is $199. No idea why the price skyrocketed, but I paid $60-$70 for it in 2018)

I’m trying to make something easy, affordable, and can be broken down to put in my otherwise useless side yard for my daughter for softball. This is exactly what I needed to see! Thanks man! Good work! 👍🏽

I did something similar in my basement, netting fastened to the ceiling studs with a skytrak best money I've ever spent. If I lived in a more remote area I would have loved to use your idea for outside. Thanks for the video great job.

That is the most awesome ultimate pandemic/antisocial setup I have seen. Great job! Skytrack is a must because I think driving in a net gives you nothing more than good impact feeling.. the end result/alignment can't be measured. Thanks for sharing

Your setup is great! This is exactly what I want to build. Something that fully encloses me, allows me to put up and remove the entire structure somewhat easily, and would allow me to hit off a good quality hitting mat with my Flightscope Mevo+ which is essentially just sitting around useless at the moment. Thanks for making this video!

Neato. I would set the tee pad further back so you have plenty of overhead clearance and you get a better look at the ball placement.
@bluerootproperties9409
@bluerootproperties9409 4 ай бұрын
Agreed, but unfortunately I didn’t have the distance behind me. I was able to use my home roof eves to get the clearance I needed, but obviously someone 6’ or taller will probably be swiping the top net. I don’t mind being close to the impact zone either…Since I can’t see much of the ball flight/path, it teaches me to keep my head still and down through the swing 👍

Mike, you're now 3 years on since you've built your at home practice net (Brilliant idea BTW). A couple of questions. How's it held up? What changes / updates have you made or would have liked to have known in the beginning? Have you come up with a similar solution to deal with the rain in the PNW so you're not limited to practicing in the "summer" season only?
@bluerootproperties9409
@bluerootproperties9409 9 ай бұрын
Dang…All very good questions 👍 Everything is as it was the first day that I put it together. One “mistake” I made - I set up my pavers stone area for my swing mat in the middle of the net area. I wish I would have placed it more off-center and to the right side, since I’m right handed. When I first started swinging, my backswing and follow-through was brushing the left side of the net and every once and a while hit one of the supports (annoying and distracting). So, I’ve had to shift the right side of my mat off the paver area. Easy fix would be to add another couple pavers to the right side, but the lack of a solid surface under the hitting area is actually a little more “life-like” since the ground out here is relatively soft. No fixes for the rain, yet, other than I’ve contemplated some sort of tarp cover. However, it just doesn’t rain so much that I can’t get out and use it at least once or twice a week. Thank you!
@jeffrielly
@jeffrielly Жыл бұрын
i found a net myself that is not doubled, but I myself am thinking of getting a 20' x 30' tarp to go over the net it's self, this may also allow me to incorporate an optishot 2 since that would take out a good portion of sunlight, if not I could just get the garmen approach r10 and use the home tee hero software
@bluerootproperties9409
@bluerootproperties9409 Жыл бұрын
Give it a go! Definitely get that tarp or double up your net on your impact area…Have fun!
@xipingwang3277
@xipingwang3277 2 жыл бұрын
Great design sir! Will make an exactly same one in my backyard. How far between each pole did you set up? What dimension do you recommend so that the net is not too loose or too tight? Thanks in advance!
@bluerootproperties9409
@bluerootproperties9409 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you…Each net is gonna stretch differently. I would wait until you have the net and stretch it to about 75% of its max length, and measure that length. That’s the number I would use to set your pipes in the mortar at that slight outward angle. Your posts will be the outward angle needed for the remaining 100% of the net’s max stretch. You want it pretty close to it being max stretched out in the end. Hope this helps.

@bluerootproperties9409
@bluerootproperties9409 3 жыл бұрын
Much appreciated...I bought mine directly through SkyTrak on-line (www.SkyTrakgolf.com). It was about $1,900 for the unit, and then you pay $100-200/year depending on the type of subscription you want. They typically have interest free financing, at least they did when I bought mine (I think it was 18 months 0% interest). Just FYI - Their subscription upload/renewal and unit registration is a bit wonky, and I had a difficult time with customer service to sort it out. You get what you pay for :)

Nicely done awesome build. Just got the approval from my wife to build one. Loved the netting I'm not sure if I will use the metal conduit or pvc, leaning towards the metals. Do you to pay yearly fee for Skytrak?
@bluerootproperties9409
@bluerootproperties9409 2 жыл бұрын
I forgot to add that the first step in building this is (1) Get your wife’s approval 😀 I definitely wouldn’t recommend PVC as the weight from the net will likely be too much, unless you are going to build a more permanent cage. And, yes, I do pay for the SkyTrak subscription ($199/year) for the driving range and a simulator that allows you to play real courses, like; Pebble Beach, Chambers Bay, St Andrews, etc. You can play in virtual tournaments with other players too, but I haven’t ventured into that area yet. Hope the build goes well!

@bluerootproperties9409

Thank you! The net and mat cost about $325 total (unfortunately that was a while back, and everything is waaaay more expensive). The poles and hardware cost maybe another $50-$75. The SkyTrak unit costs just under $2k, and you have to subscribe to the service each year (about $100-$200 a year depending on the package you want).

Great video. Just bought a net and this video is my blueprint. Question, how much space is between the back of the net (where you hit into) and your house? Does the net fully absorb the impact of the golf ball without kicking back into the house? I’m building it on the side of my house and it will be facing my fence. So curious how much space I need in between the two so the golf ball doesn’t bounce off my fence and ricochets back.

I have about 3 to 3.5 feet between the net and my house. The net on the side that I hit came with a double net. So, it is rather heavy and stops about 95% of my shots from hitting the house. The other 5% of drives barely grazes the wall. Another half a foot clearance, and there wouldn't be any worries. If you have a single net you are hitting into, I would definitely put up another hitting panel, tarp, or something to beef it up.

No issues at all. I have a little more than 3 feet between my net and the house wall. Plus, I have the net just hanging there. So, I think the net’s slack absorbs and slows the ball before it has a chance to impact the house.

I actually bought an “All Turf Mats” off of Amazon. It’s held up really well. Thick pad underneath and the “grass” is dense and strong enough to hold up a tee. The pad itself is pretty darn heavy, and I’ve never had it slip underneath me (but part of that might be due to the fact I have rough concrete pavers underneath it). I never have any concerns about hitting down into it, as the pad underneath is rather substantial.

Great setup! Thinking of using some of these ideas, particularly how you cemented the pipes into the ground to hold up the long poles. Do you find that the pipes and poles make any noise or squeaking when you hit balls? Just wondering how the metal-on-metal deals with the impact and whether that would annoy me.
@bluerootproperties9409
@bluerootproperties9409 Жыл бұрын
Thanks and happy it inspired some thoughts for you…Now that you mention metal on metal noise, I really don’t hear any or perhaps I’m just not bothered by it (if there is any). There is some space between the poles and the pipe. So, if there was noise that bothered me, I would just jam a tee in the space and get back to playing. You could also try wrapping some thin weather stripping around the bottom of the pole…again, if it was an issue. I think the double net on the impact side really absorbs most of the force and subsequent movement in the poles. Best of luck to you.

Awesome video, great disclaimers, disclosures, and suggestions. I love this! For future videos the music started to get a bit annoying after the first half of the video. It might be worth either making it quieter, choosing a different song for different parts, or just omitting sound altogether. Sometimes less is more! For the record I still thumbs-upped the video. I’m so sorry for your loss…Depending where you live, I’m not sure if you want to put a set up like this outside full-time. Out here in Washington, the rain kind of forces me to pack it up. However, I have considered getting roof over it. The SkyTrak has some issues in direct sunlight on its sensor. So, some shade would be a welcome addition. If I was going to make it permanent, I probably wouldn’t concern myself with the pole in the ground…Probably just think of a design more like a shower curtain, where the net can just hang to the ground. Not sure if that makes any sense…The net I purchased was from Amazon - Dynamax Sports Store. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Amazon carries it anymore, but I’m sure you can find something similar. Here was the product description on their 10x10x10 net: “This commercial grade netting from Dynamax Sports is made from the durable No.18 Twisted Knotted Nylon netting. It is UV and weather treated to last year round indoors or outdoors. The 3/4" square mesh will stop high impact balls from passing through including those hit by drivers. Each net will be reinforced with a 1/4" rope border with a spring clip at each corner.”

How good is that launch monitor at picking up on miss hits, does it detect if you shanked, hooked, or sliced the ball?
@bluerootproperties9409
@bluerootproperties9409 Жыл бұрын
The reason why I went with this monitor was because of its ability and accuracy in measuring spin, shanks, hooks, slices, etc…and it was cheap by comparison to all the other bells and whistles it came with. The only complaint I have with it is - direct sunlight messes with its ability to pick up the ball. I do need to find a way to keep the hitting area and the unit’s “eyes” under shade.

Unfortunately, I really don’t see another product that is all inclusive like what I purchased and listed. There are a few products with the full 10x10x10 foot enclosure, but it appears they might have a mesh size of 1”, don’t have a secondary impact net/panel, and/or don’t have the loops at the corner that make it easier to hang. You might have to piece it together. Your net should not have a mesh size greater than 7/8”…3/4” or smaller is preferable. The one I purchased is 7/8” mesh and an errant shot that misses the front double impact panel will get through the net. So, if you end up with a 7/8” mesh net, make sure you double up the front impact panel…plus, it would help to have the front and secondary impact panels separated by at least 3 inches. If you cannot find a net with looped corners, you can always pick up some climbing/carabiner clips for a couple bucks at a hardware store. I wish they hadn’t discontinued what I bought…It is still a great net (going on well over 2 years). Hope this helps…Good luck!

I love this! The problem I’m facing is that the nipple pipes would have to be on my lawn. And I would not like to have them stick up, so you think it would be possible to have them deeper to be leveled with the ground when not being used? Or would that not work? Mostly because I don’t want anyone tripping over them or that my robot mower will break going over them. Also, since this is a year ago. Have you had any problem with the net breaking?
@bluerootproperties9409
@bluerootproperties9409 2 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed! My only concern about burying the pipes lower in the ground would be the final height of the top net above you. The conduit pipe is only 10 feet long. So, if you fully bury the 6” support pipe and cap, you will end up with a final height of the net being under 9’6” (as the top net will still likely sag a bit). Just double check how high you normally swing, as I would find it annoying to do all the work and end up consistently hitting the top net in your backswing or follow through.
@vickeeh

@@bluerootproperties9409 I will try to get hold on some longer pipes. What kind of metal would you recommend? Would any work? The prices are a bit different in Sweden, and we don’t really use a lot of emt conduits.
@bluerootproperties9409
@bluerootproperties9409 2 жыл бұрын
Darn good question…I’m not sure what you have out there. I guess I would make a trip to the hardware store and see if there is something that behaves similarly to the 3/4” conduit. PVC will likely be too flexible and unable to hold up to the weight of the net without building an entire cage. Fully galvanized plumbing pipe will likely be too heavy, impractical, and expensive. Sorry…wish I could be more helpful :(

I tried burying 6” nipples into the lawn with some concrete mix around it but the tension from the net ripped them right out of the ground. I’m going to have to dig down at least a foot for a solid base I think next week. Awesome video and thanks for the idea.

@@Mizza62 Oh snap! (Pun intended)…but serious, sorry to hear your first attempt didn’t work out. I too dug down about 12-18 inches, and had to put a few large rocks at the bottom of the hole to keep the 6” pipe from sinking into the concrete. Trial and error…but it sucks to have an issue when you are dealing with mortar/concrete. Best of luck to you and your second attempt! 🤞

So I bought this net a year ago and slowly building my own at home sim, but the net keeps scuffing or marking up the ball, making the launch monitor unable to read the flight path. Did this ever happen to you? If so, how did you resolve it?
@bluerootproperties9409
@bluerootproperties9409 9 ай бұрын
Good question because it does happen to me too. I haven’t found a solution, other than soap and water. My SkyTrak will have some issues reading the ball’s flight when it gets stupid dirty from the net. However, by the time I notice the problem, I’ve thrown the ball away because I’ve hit it so many times, by that point, that I’m noticing less distance and it’s under performing. I wish I had a better answer for ya.

If you did not use your house as support in the impact area, how many additional pipes would you use?
@bluerootproperties9409
@bluerootproperties9409 11 ай бұрын
I would probably only add the one on the left corner. I wouldn’t want to add a pole in the middle of the impact area, as I’d be a little nervous of a ricochet should I actually hit one straight 🤣. So, in total, I would have 6 pipes - 3 on each side. However, If I was getting too much sag in the middle on my impact side, I would try to figure out how to add an extension arm on another pole to allow me to hold up the middle without adding the hazard of a ricochet…Hope that makes sense 👍
