I show you how I set up my low cost but effective golf simulator in my small garage. I highlight the three big obstacles I faced and how I solved all three (small space, garage door opener in the way, and how I would utilize a projector). Costs of the setup are also highlighted. If you are looking to build your own cost effective golf simulator in a smaller space, this video may give you a few ideas.

Dude, I love golf, but am terrible at it, but WILL put something like this together. Thanks so much! So from where I place the ball on the mat to where the impact screen hangs is 82 inches. However, the net goes back a little bit more as the impact screen hangs down straight and the back of the Spornia is slightly slanted away. Also, the ball to the front edge of the Spornia mat footprint is only 21 inches. If there is anything else I can help out with let me know. Cheers.

Skytrak and case was 1k less, Ipad was $300, 50 in TV $300, mat recommended by Golf Channel was $300 ( this mat helps you know when you hit the ground before the ball). Thank you! So, I didn't mention this in the video but I also had a new garage door installed when I had the opener put in. The cost of the new door, opener, extended track and installation was 3K CND. It was all included in the quote so I'm not sure how much just the opener and track would be but I would assume more than half of that cost was the door itself. Hope this helps.

I really like the idea of a wall mounted display. Even 65 - 75 inch 4K tvs are dirt cheap these days. Would a MEVO + be a consideration or does it take up too much space. I don't have your space limitations ( my useful area is 16 wide x 25 ft long x 12 high ). Thanks
@GolfQuestChannel
@GolfQuestChannel 2 жыл бұрын
With 25 feet in length you should be good with the Mevo+. I haven't used it myself but I understand that it sits between 4 - 7 feet behind the ball. Definitely the better option if you are wanting to play with left & right handed players and if you want to take it outside (maybe to the range). I know lots of people love their Mevo :) As for the wall mounted display, even if you want to add a projector setup later you can just have the tv there for entertainment while you play. It makes a lot of sense either way. Thanks for watching and let me know how your build goes - exciting times!

Great video. We must live close if you golf at bondhead. Do you have any thoughts on the garmin r10 I'm also thinking about doing a shed build out for a sim.
@GolfQuestChannel
@GolfQuestChannel 2 жыл бұрын
From what I have read / watched, the garmin r10 is a very powerful, portable, and obviously cost effective unit. If you are going to the range a lot this would seem like a great idea. However, I think for an indoor setup I wouldn't go this route. It is reported to be not as accurate inside and for myself, I wouldn't have the distance required to place the unit behind the ball. Skytrak allows for more compact sim setups. If you have left handed and right handed golfers playing, Skytrak is not ideal as it needs to be moved to accommodate which player (lefty or righty) is hitting. Best of luck with your Sim build - so much fun!

Great video and advice. One question: does your garage have a slope? Wondering if that would affect numbers on the skytrack or if it would cause bad habits to constantly be practicing on a downhill or uphill lie.
@GolfQuestChannel
@GolfQuestChannel 10 ай бұрын
I do have a slight slope yes but it doesn't seem to affect anything at all. I just put my skytrak flat on the extra portion of the Fiberbuilt mat (highly recommend that mat and I have no affiliate to them). It's pricey but worth it. The only thing I really find affects misreads is the background. I put my green screen behind me and that really helps.

So my original response was from the golf course lol. Nevertheless, I do think that a used set of irons and a used driver is the way to go. I you get one of the big brands (Taylor-Made, Cobra, Callaway etc.) you can't really go wrong with a used set. It will be better than any starter no-name set you will get. Then, once you have been into the game for a bit, you can eventually get fitted for a new set. Let me know if you have any more questions and thanks for supporting the channel - appreciated.

Thank you so much for this video. It has helped me out tremendously. I could tell you like quality things so I didn't have to do much research like I usually do and modeled my setup after yours but went as cheap as I could go, luckily getting some holiday pricing. My shopping list: Spornia SPG5 $171 + GoSports shank net w/sandbag $20, Garmin R10 $600 + Pro V1 RCT balls $50, Fiberbuilt Flight Deck $50 + 3'x3'x1.75" mat $65, Projector 1080p w/50% zoom & ±50° vert/hori keystone $200 + Spornia sim screen $36, Projector stand $61 + iPad stand clamp $18, and an old dusty iPad pro 1st gen $Free. Grand total before tax = $1271. I was agonizing about buying the skytrak because wife saw a mevo+ in the amazon cart and was not happy about it costing $1700 but luckily read a couple of articles that say RCT balls with R10 was decently accurate. I'm surprising the wife for xmas with this sim build because due to her low vision she can't practice on her own at the driving range and now can play whenever she wants and it will save me tons of time and money from taking her to a toptracer range.

Hello my friend. Good job. Certainly a viable option. You did leave out one cost. The side mount door opener. From what I'm told and have been quoted, those are around $2500? Also have a question. DO you havento have the iPad and Apple TV as an interface? Can you not just install a wireless receiver/adapter from the skytrack to the TV?
@GolfQuestChannel
@GolfQuestChannel 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yes, I didn't include that cost because we were actually due for a new garage door as well and it was part of a package (new door, extended track, side mount opener, and install). I think you can get the unit for between 700-1000 CND and if you can install it yourself terrific. If not, you are still looking at the install cost and the cost of extending your current track. Finally, you need either an iPad or a computer / laptop to run the skytrak software (and then any other simulator software you might want to add - currently I use e6 connect to play courses). Hope this helps and thanks for checking out the channel :)

@GolfQuestChannel
@GolfQuestChannel 7 ай бұрын
Thank you. I heat with two ceramic heaters. My garage is not insulated (other than the walls not sharing an interior wall with the house that is) but my garage door is a metal insulated door which helps as well. So I don't lose heat instantly when I heat. The impact is loud with the driver - can definitely hear it in the house but it's not horrible. There are other golf mats that are more portable. However, if you play a lot you might start to feel it in your joints and also they won't last as long. The Fiberbuilt definitely is not portable though lol. That thing is a beast. As for putting turf I don't know and I don't want to mislead you. Thanks for checking out the channel and best of luck with your projects!

Sadly no. One of its great benefits is it’s extremely heavy base. Really the way to move it is to take it apart into a couple pieces. Wonderful if you don’t want it to move but not great if you need it to. There are smaller versions that might be more portable though.

Outstanding video, thank you so much for sharing! A few questions, if you don't mind... 1. I noticed in your other video about the Spornia SP7 that you hit a 56-degree wedge, and the ball hits near the top of the target. Have you hit a 60-degree into the net, and at what height would you say it hits the net? I have 8' 5" of height to work with, so I'm trying to figure out if I can make this type of setup work. Also have 11' of width and 26' of length. Initially I was looking at the Garmin Approach R10 (which you have to set up 8' behind the ball, with another 8' min in front of the ball, so with that, there is a lot of room for the ball to go over the net - with SkyTrak though, less distance is needed, so that problem would be solved. 2. From the back of the Spornia net to the farthest point of your backswing, how many total feet is the footprint of your setup? Thank you! Matt
@GolfQuestChannel
@GolfQuestChannel Жыл бұрын
I don't mind at all - glad to help where I can. First, I have never missed the net with a wedge. If I pop the 60 degree up I have hit the "hood" which is the extra part included at the top of the Spornia but that is rare. I don't hit my 60 degree far at all - like 70 yards (I hit the ball pretty high). So if I don't have issues I don't think many will. Having said that, when you do hit the hood it comes back at you rather quickly which is not ideal lol. I have yet to be hit by my own ball though (in a year and a half of having the sim). From the back of the net to the farthest point in my backswing with a driver is 14.5 feet (15 feet to be safe extra safe). As for the height, I think it depends on how tall you are. I have a little more ceiling height than you (just over 9 feet) and I'm 5,10. I have plenty of space to swing. There is no way I would be able to have a sim without Skytrak. I've heard great things about the Mevo as well but it requires space I don't have. I have been thrilled with the Skytrak. Thanks for checking out the channel and if you have any other questions let me know.

@@GolfQuestChannel Thank you very much - great info! Just one more: SkyTrak - from what I understand, it comes with access to a driving range and what else, exactly? I thought this was going to be the launch monitor to go with, but if it doesn't come with any free/nearly free courses, it sounds like it might add up over time (whereas the Garmin Approach R10 requires more space BUT has free courses preloaded). @GolfQuestChannel
@GolfQuestChannel 2 жыл бұрын
@@brianpinkley It will be tight for hitting driver / woods with that space. I'm pretty sure the 9'6" width is okay if you put the mat right against the edge of the porch (the side you are facing). You might even get away with the length but I think it will be iffy - will also depend how tall / long your arms are. There are a couple other options for nets that aren't quite as deep as the spornia such as the Net Return Pro but I think they are more expensive, and I can't speak to the "bounce back" effect they have on the ball so you would want to research that a bit if you wanted to go that way. But a net like that might save you the space you need in order to swing the driver confidently. Hope this helps.

Thanks. Very interesting. (Love the framed picture of Kramer!😄) 1 question: What was the reason for the body aches with the first mat?
@GolfQuestChannel

I think it's because the mat is quite grippy and dense so it grabs the club when you "take a divot" or when you hit it fat (I'm sadly more the latter lol). Not noticeable at first but over time it became quite hard on my wrists and elbows especially my lead side (I'm lead hand dominant). I didn't want this to be the case because I truly loved hitting off that mat but in the end I had to make the change. And yes, the Kramer is a classic lol. You inspired me and I ordered stuff to get this going. I live in India, so I need to source all this from abroad. Watching this video for the second time. My wife and I are also road cyclists and we have a bike and gym room with about 9 bikes. Planning to add a sim there. It's a 26*14 foot room so space seems to be enough. Planning for the Garmin R10 though not the skytrak. Few questions if you don't mind. 1. That stiff ring all around the black screen - any possibility of a ball ricocheting of that back to you? 2. If I set this up indoors where I have no pegs to hold it down, what holds it in place 3. Is it worth buying the side extensions? And, how have you fixed that one side side extension? 4. What height would you need if you wanted to swing a driver?
@GolfQuestChannel
@GolfQuestChannel Жыл бұрын
Glad to hear you are building a Sim - lots of fun ahead. Here are the answers to your questions: 1. I have hit the inside back tent-like pole with a ball before and it has not come back to hit me but to be fair I don't do that very often. Has only happened on the dreaded shank. 2. Nothing is holding my Spornia Net down either. It just sits there. Now, I do have the left side tied off to the wall just to help keep it perfectly straight (vertically) but it's not absolutely necessary. 3. I don't think I have ever actually hit the side extensions. I bought those more for my son in case he really missed. I don't think I would buy them again but maybe one day I will be glad I have it. It is just fixed to the bottom of my garage with a screw into the side wall. 4. Height with the driver depends on how tall you are. I have approximately 9.5 feet of height in my garage and that's all the room I need. Hope this helps and have fun with the build!

So with my current setup no. My son is also left handed so this worked for us. With my original mat, I could pull the net and mat over slightly and be able to hit on both sides. However, this is the one drawback of the skytrak (and GC Quaid for that matter) - you have to physically pick up the unit and move it based on which handed player is hitting. If you have a bit more space and plan on switching between lefties and righties often then the Mevo+ is probably the better option (unless you don't mind moving the unit in between shots).
