Where there's a will, there's a way!! I knew from the start a) I wasn't going to go out every morning and every evening 2) I didn't want to pay very much for an automatic door opener. As you said, this isn't perfect, but it actually does the job very well. AND I was able to get the chicken who didn't like to roost back to roosting (ask me if you're interested how).

Nice idea. I know some of the automatic doors can be pushed up from the bottom, and I wonder if a raccoon wanted in that they could indeed get in.
@asnowski Жыл бұрын
I have wondered this myself. There is no "finger hold" underneath the door. It comes flush with the base. The edges on either side are covered. But to test it, I'd need to lock a raccoon in my run with the chickens in the coop.

I had read comments about it but unfortunately it only works according to the weight of the hens, vertical and sliding door. There is no way to turn it into a bridge type liftgate.
@revolutionarychicken62513 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is a vertical opening door and does work according to the weight of the hens.
@AztecWarrior69_692 жыл бұрын
Why NOT? Why Can't you? Look I don't recommend this particular way of "automating" a coop door but you can still make a drawbridge type door using this. All you have to do is match the distance the perch/roosting lever travels to the distance the door raises and lowers. Use stainless steel pullies to get the friction down to a minimum.
@LoOMleetamus Жыл бұрын
I made this 15ys ago, but i used bottles of water as the counterbalance so I could fine tune the weight as the hens grew.

@revolutionarychicken6251 Жыл бұрын
The predator would be outside of the coop, so how would they make them jump off the roost? If the predator is inside the coop, then it's a lost cause.

Smart. The big negative I see is of a predator is outside n one or more decides to jump off for any reason
@revolutionarychicken62512 жыл бұрын
Even though it closes on the last one, it takes two to get down for it to open. So even if one jumps off, it stays closed. Not sure how the physics on that work, but I should have mentioned it in the video.

no batteries and no electricity and no security. If a hen or two decide not to join the rest or worse one or two get eaten or die during the days, then you are dooming the whole flock. "no batteries and no electricity" unless you are using the batteries as counter weights then the batteries provide electricity. So while you are trying to make your list of things this "gets rid of" , it really is only one thing on the list and that is just not worth the lack of stability.
@revolutionarychicken62513 жыл бұрын
What you are saying is true. However, chickens are creatures of habit. So while it does depend on whether the chickens sleep in their coop at night, they just do. I have my chickens in their run during the day--they don't free-range unless I'm there because I occasionally get a wandering dog in my yard. So I don't really have to worry about chickens getting killed during the day. But if you had a setup where there is more danger of them not making it back at night, it probably wouldn't be a good idea.
@AztecWarrior69_692 жыл бұрын
@@revolutionarychicken6251 Actually you are wrong about them being creatures of habit. They do not think "Oh that's where I go every night when I'm tired." NO. They go to wherever they feel safest at that time. I had a large coop in the back of my property, with all the security measure and safety, YET as I was building a smaller brooding coop, they would go and roost in that coop even tho it had no walls at the time. So your idea that just because they TEND to go inside one place does NOT mean that they do not change their minds and roost elsewhere. Also The run attactcted to large coop was fully enclosed and had roosting bars that were lower than the bars inside the coop, yet they would (on random nights) sleep outside instead of in the coop. Then I built a second coop. Was planning to expand the flock. And the existing flock sometimes would all be in the first one, or they would be all in the second one, or they would be split up into both coops. So NO they are not creatures of habit. Lets not forget that chickens have a hierarchy . Chickens can and will, at anytime decide that another chicken is not worthy of roosting with the rest of the flock. They will even torment and pick the feathers off of them. So those chastised birds may not want to or be allowed to roost with the rest of the flock. In short this is a bad idea when compared to better available methods. I fully believe in doing things simpler, lower cost, creative, and with tools & supplies on hand, yet this is not one of those times. Too much can go wrong and too much to make sure that it doesn't.
