Leather and kydex make great materials for an axe mask but both involve time and money learning how to use them. PVC offers a much less expensive alternative. It may not be as good as kydex or as nice looking as leather but it is still very functional. In this video I make a mask for my Fiskars X7 hatchet

I needed to make some sort of sheath/mask for a hatchet. This was exactly what I needed to walk me through the process! I didn't have any PVC pipe but I found some scrap vinyl siding and it worked well enough. Thank you!

I have a couple of hatchets and tomahawks that need a blade cover. This is a great design. I’m thinking maybe I can play around with the ‘ears’ and get it to snap on and off. 🤔 Thanks for this video 😎

I've yet to see anyone making a pvc mask for an axe/hatchet that placed a small oblong piece of wood atop one face/side of the axe, allowing for an indentation that could accommodate the riveting of a belt loop attachment. I've employed silicone to mould masks in the past with limited success, but intend trying the pvc idea, incorporating my own idea for the belt loop. Thanks for uploading! I know it's been three years, since you posted this vid, but KZbin has only put it into my recommendations under half an hour ago.

very impressive result. i use pvc for all sorts of things, you can easily form it. i did a axe sheath simply by molding it over the sharp edge and used a strand and molded it over the back to form a simple clip. you can use alcohol in a spraycan and a lighter to heat the pvc, so you can also achieve big projects.

Very nice, Mark. Sometimes I think you're reading my mind. A PVC neck knife sheath has been on my to-do list for a few months, and now you've provided the guidance I need (especially the type of PVC). I've already purchased the hot air gun and pop rivet tool. I'll let you know how it turns out (keeping in mind that v1.0 is hardly ever the final version). P.S. I located a chap just up the street who will sell me "green" coffee beans, so home roasted coffee is also in my near future.

I've never thought about using PVC to make a sheath. What a great ideal. I was wondering if you tried adding an additional chin between where you add the pop rivets, similar to what you would see on some leather sheaths.
@MarkYoungBushcraft
@MarkYoungBushcraft 6 жыл бұрын
PVC is easy to work with and very inexpensive. The nice thing about designing sheaths with PVC is that if it doesn't work out, you haven't wasted a lot of money. Your idea of an extra chin may be worth trying. Thanks for commenting
