I'm digging a new well in order to setup a geothermal cooling system for my shed so I can have unlimited free water and air conditioning. In this video, part 1, I dig the bore hole, show how to pound a sand point well, and connect the well up to a jet pump using poly pipe.

Absolutely brilliant idea. No music this time and so much better thank you. Your water availability seemed to be too low to keep a constant flow rate, it seemed the pump was sucking up more than it could be supplied by the well point and if that is the case was driving it down into the clay too far causing this. You mentioned jacking it back up with a car jack but I missed when you did this so apologies if you did this without recording. Loved the science too and not making that mistake when people mention cold being conducted, only heat can be conducted into the cooler pipes (as you pointed out).

I haven't watched your videos yet but this is what I have had in mind for a while . I just wanna add to it some guys in poor countries not only use sand point wells but also they make water to water heat pumps for less than $500
@BadHomeowner
@BadHomeowner 3 жыл бұрын
The cost of my heat pump setup was probably around $500. Total cost of the system was around $1200. The two most expensive things were the 1/2hp pump and the pressure tank.

I believe my water table is at about 300 ft according to some well data in my area. I'm not exactly sure how accruate that information is or what you used to determine yours.

yea unfortunately I did this the way I do all things: with no plan and figuring stuff out as I go. The specific shapes/sizes of piping and whatnot are going to be unique to your situation anyway, which is why I mainly talked about the big components.

I don’t know if you did but keep digging until you can’t dig anymore. When you are in the water bearing sand you want you won’t be able to dig anymore. I disagree with your logic about the layers. You will have many layers of sand and clay before you get where you want. I hit water at 8’ and couldn’t dig past it. I still went to 27’. That was 2013 and I use the well to water my grass with a 27 gpm pump. The pros here go to 42-47 ‘ for sprinklers and 100’ for drinking. Just my opinion of course

yes a shallow well like this would probably just be seasonal water. The potable water year round would probably be much lower?

Question; why not combine your well water with your heat pump? The water should be usable coming out of the radiator.
@BadHomeowner
@BadHomeowner 3 жыл бұрын
Yea that's doable and piping would be somewhat simpler, but pushing the water through the 2 radiators would drop the output water pressure quite a bit.

Do you put anything around the well point like gravel, or does it just sit in the hole and then you back fill?
@BadHomeowner
@BadHomeowner 3 жыл бұрын
If you start driving the point at the surface, nothing needs to be filled in. I dug a few feet and then started driving, so I backfilled the top part that I dug with the dirt that I pulled out.

Is there a check valve built into well point like a foot valve

Ok so my pipe is holding water at the top , this mean my drive point is clogged correct ?
@BadHomeowner
@BadHomeowner 7 ай бұрын
Could be clogged, or it means you aren't deep enough for the water to easily enter/exit the water-bearing sand at the bottom.

@@BadHomeowner This pump has a vertical lift of 30 feet. Everbilt 1/4 HP 2-in-1 Utility Pump. Is that it? thanks. I got a 1/6th horse power pump that has the same lift power but it's a different engine design. It's made by Liberty pumps in New York. So I can run it off-grid with a lithium generator. But that depth for me is just seasonal water - so I am in the process of doing a well-point drive down to 50 feet. I'm hoping I'll get through the clay layer and into sand by the time I get down that far. The clay is very hard to drive by hand so I'll rent the GPD-45. Gas Powered Driver. I'm waiting till spring just since connecting pipe in freezing weather is annoying. hahaha. Also I'm hoping the spring flooding will soften up the ground even more - as it soaks in. I had water down there - I drove it manually about two feet deeper. Plus the hole starts a couple feet down from the top ground. So I'm at 26 feet deep or 27 feet deep now. I need 10 more feet of pipe plus an extended to 2 inch. I have 10 feet of 2 inch pipe but that's too big to drive into the ground. So I am driving a 1 1/4" well point. Then I got a manual lift pump - instead of an electric one. The pump was super expensive but it has a sucker-rod in it connected to two one-way foot valves in the bottom. So it's hex hose and then a flexible steel sucker "rod" - in the hex coil - and the warm weather is required to uncoil the hex pipe. hahaha. Then there's a handle attached on top to the sucker rod. It's a cool design but the parts are probably $100 total and the pump was like $600. There's no assembly required except attaching the sucker rod with a vise grip to the pump handle rod. I'm sure just a normal pliers would probably work. So no need to use PVC glue cement - that stuff is toxic anyway. But the PVC pumps of this same design are half the price. Or you can just make one yourself if you get the check valves and toxic pipe glue. hahaha. I don't want to use that purple primer - it's carcinogenic! I don't see the point of polluting the water when making a well. Kind of ironic since you're required to submit the well construction for a well-point when it's completed but there's no fee at least.
