DIY Bath Bombs! These are easy, fun and pretty inexpensive to make when you consider that a large one sells for $6 at the mall. They make wonderful gifts too and are a great craft to make with teens!
Supplies & Recipe (with affiliate links to amazon BUT please note that everything EXCEPT citric acid and fragrance will be cheaper from your local grocery store, I want my peeps to get good deals!)
*Dry ingredients-whisk together in a bowl.
1 cup Baking Soda amzn.to/2DiysPo
1/2 cup Citric Acid amzn.to/2kvgYHw
1/2 cup Epsom Salts amzn.to/2CM3spK
1/2 cup Corn Starch amzn.to/2B7vwDx
*Wet ingredients- Put in a small jar and shake
1 Tablespoon water
1 Tablespoon mineral oil amzn.to/2z6BD9z (you can use melted coconut oil, soybean or olive oil but I chose mineral/baby oil as it will not turn rancid which is not an issue if you are using the bath bombs soon)
1 teaspoon of fragrance oil amzn.to/2BoJuoQ (I used one tsp or 3 droppers full but other recipes called for 6 which seemed like a lot. Use your own tastes and judgment)
Liquid food coloring amzn.to/2CMNwn9 (as desired)
Bath bomb molds: amzn.to/2Bx9J8N
Directions:
1. Whisk dry ingredients together. Slowly add the freshly shaken wet ingredients to the dry and combine with a whisk until there are no big lumps and it looks like sand.
2. Overfill both halves of your mold and press together firmly. You can use other molds you have as well but you need to pack the mixture in very tightly or the bath bomb might crumble when you remove it from the mold.
3. Remove the bath bomb from the mold and set in a tray/box lined with plastic wrap to dry for 48 hours.
4. After 48 hours wrap with plastic wrap and blast with a hairdryer for a professional look. You can also add in dry pressed flowers when you warp them for a beautiful presentation.
Want a side of science with your art?
Why does it fizz? The citric acid is an acid and it reacts with baking soda (a base) just like vinegar and baking soda does. The bombs are quiet until water activates the citric acid and the reaction begins. The bubbles that are created are carbon dioxide. The corn starch serves two purposes: 1. it acts as a filler and a buffering agent between the citric acid and baking soda so you get a "slow fizz" rather than an explosion and 2. it is a binder and helps the bath bomb hold it's rock hard shape until dunked in water.
The remaining ingredients are therapeutic!
Epsom salts will soothe sore muscles and soften skin
The oils smell nice and will moisturize the skin and the food color is pretty.

I have been making bath bombs for a few years now. I mix the dry and the wet separately and then add the citric acid...less risk of activating the acid. I also use a sifter to remove the chunks in the baking soda, starch, and acid. those are just a few things I have learned with experience. =)

I attempted to make bath bombs for the first time last night. they keep rising and was way to wet. I ruined 3 batches. used them to clean the sink drain. I now know it was the citric acid and to much water.

Cracking means it's most likely too dry. You may need to add more oil to it.. and use witch hazel or rubbing alcohol instead of water. Mix wet together and then mix all the dry except citric acid and then combine dry and wet together.. you can add more wet if needed. When it's wet enough to clump in a hand and drop without breaking then add the citric acid.. Mica powder works as coloring too Instead of liquid color

OMG! This was sooooo helpful. Everywhere else I looked and it said to let them dry IN the mold. I could never get them out of the molds, even if I prepped them with oil and corn starch. I have the same molds you do. I almost gave up until I watched your video last night. I made 5 batches and they all turned out perfect! Thank you so much!

I didn’t realize they would be so easy and have such simple ingredients. I’d love to have some friends over and spend the day making these. I’ll have to try the shrink wrap tip with homemade soap. I’d use a hair dryer, not a heat gun, and hope it doesn’t melt the soap! The dried flowers in the packaging looks so cute. I press flowers in the microwave all the time thanks to your flower pressing video. Thanks! :)

Hi Lindsay, I have always wondered how bath bombs were made - now I know. I can't take a bath now due to ill health but a funny story I was once given a bath bomb from a friend as a present and it smelt amazing and there were dried flowers on the outside. It was all great I ran the water and it started to fizz up and down the bath like they are supposed to do. I got into the bath and realised that there were a lot more dried flowers than was on the top. I tried relaxing but I cont because it seems that this particular bomb had died flowers throughout the bomb and when I stood up my body was just a scattering if dried flowers and I ended up having a shower to remove all the dried flowers LOL. But that would not stop me making bath bombs though, thank you Lindsay for showing us crafters how. :O)

Hi Lindsay. I am sure you are getting many tips. Here is another one. I mix all of my ingredients but hold out my citric acid till after everything else is mixed (wet & dry) and then stir in the citric acid, the wet ingredients is all mixed in & don't have to worry setting off the citric acid. I find I have much fizzier bombs. love your video :)

Unfortunately, yes - one of my daughters bought the other a hefty set from the local Lush store and I was floored at the cost. And, I don't know what Lush uses or what vendors they buy from, so the DIY is very appealing to me for the whole, "I know what went into it," aspect. Also, some of those storebought one's contain elements that can gum up a sump pump, if you aren't careful. That happened to us a few years back and I had to clean out the whole pump because of a glittery goop that got stuck. Now, _NO glitter bath bombs, EVER!!_ (said in the voice of Faye Dunaway) lol! :)

Good job. I make bath bombs often . I enjoy it because it relaxes me. Your texture is suppose to feel like wet sand. If your bombs fall a part dont worry, just put your mixture back in in the bowl and spritz it with alcohol 2 make it more wet. Also, they dont require 48 hrs to dry. Lol

They are definitely drying out. If you’re going to make the batch ahead of time, I suggest leaving the citric acid out of the dry mix and adding it in in small batches when you mold them. Basically the longer the citric acid sits in the mix, the quicker it dries up.

aislinrose1 I have 10 minutes left of the ad, so I haven't seen Lindsay's recipe, but I have made bath bombs for years. Eucalyptus is an oil I would use sparingly or not at all in bath bombs UNLESS you are using them as a foot soak only. For lavender I use about 20 to 25 drops in a cup of baking soda, and 1/2 cup of citric acid recipe. I spray with witch hazel to get it to bind. Check your essential oils for warnings of skin irritation before using in bath bombs. Peppermint and private parts don't mix well.

I used the metal molds and had trouble removing the bombs when they were finished. I have found the plastic molds to be more forgiving and easier to work with.

Lucy Pumkinjack IKR! I paid a lot of money for the those molds when the 3.21$ plastic ones from hobby lobby work best . I don’t even use the expensive ones

I had no idea you could shrink saran wrap. Do you any tips about saran wrap? The one I got with the cutter messed up.

I hat it when that happens, two in a row the tooth cutting strip came off, I like this one with a slider a lot. I just used scissors when the others came off though, not ideal but it works.
