He installed it incorrectly. He left the black rubber gasket underneath the drain spud . It should’ve been removed and he should’ve used plumbers putty . Also at the end of the project you should’ve removed the lever and plunger mechanism from the overflow. This is the problem with KZbin, everyone has an opinion/ way to do things unfortunately not always the correct one

OK! This video helped me a lot. Thank you. I have to share something more though. I changed my old drain to ABS from brass. When I used the pliers, I broke the first needlenose pair. Then I sprayed rustcheck in and around the drain and left it overnight. It loosened it and I thought that I was unscrewing the drain with another pair of pliers but it turned out that the whole thing was turning underneath too. I decided to use the grinder to cut the whole thing off from underneath. That was the best thing that I could do. After that, Astalavista and I started to install my ABS kit. I was glad that I hadn't damaged the old washer when I found out that the new drain was leaking and I added it to the drain inside the bath because the washer in the kit had to go under the bath. That old washer stopped the leak. Don't get discouraged and have fun! :) Notes: The extractor tool is not even available at our local hardware stores and I would have to order it online which would take a few weeks before receiving it. Also, this is our Makita grinder: www.makita.ca/index2.php?event=tool&id=219&catid=3

Needle nose & adjustable pliers worked a treat, and saved me some money. I didn't use the rubber gasket, opted for a bead of plumber's putty instead. Rubber has a tendency to rot and harsh cleaning chemicals would probably accelerate that. Thanks!

Thank you so very much for this video. The plumber tool would not work for my tub, as there was a post in the center taller than the allowance in the tool. So, your pliers trick worked for me. And, I could not have done it without the WD-40 tip (used twice - 30 min each time, was able to turn once after first application and was able to finish after second application) as it was STUCK ! All fixed now - because of you! Thanks!

Very clever and a great way to save the expense of a drain remover tool. Some of those run $60 and up, and for a one time use, it was way out of my budget. Anyhow, this method didn't work for me as the crossbar in my drain was so corroded from hard water that it totally broke off when my son tried to remove it. So now what? I'm a 76 yr old woman left with a mess, and don't laugh.... I installed a new vanity and toilet all by myself, plumbing and all! Anyhow, I messed with every method I saw on youtube and nothing worked, so I put my brain to use. I used a thin screwdriver to get under the flange and lifted it up from the plumber's putty. Some have done that and then can grab the lip of the flange and unscrew it that way. No such luck for this poor old soul! The whole flange broke off and now I was left with the remainder of the drain screwed to the wall down inside. However, I could see that it was only about a half inch in length, maybe 3/4 of an inch. Well, off to Lowes where they had another tool to try. One end was too small, and the other end was too big! I tried duct tape on the smaller end, which was a good 1/4 " too small...... that didn't work! I tried the crow bar method and everything else I've seen on youtube and nothing worked for me, so the only thing left was my own ingenuity. I took a very thin paring knife and worked it into the copper piece left screwed into the drain and VERY carefully worked it down the side of the drain the half inch or more, and yes, I used a hammer to work it down there, but very carefully. I couldn't tell for sure if the pipe it is inserted into was copper or brass, so I didn't want to puncture the other pipe. Once I loosened it about a 16th of an inch away from the threaded wall in one spot, I then inserted a small thin 3" screwdriver. I worked that back and forth, carefully, pulling the drain away from the threaded pipe, until before I knew it, the whole ring just fell off! Voila! Three days of frustration and running back and forth to get plumbing supplies, and all it took was a kitchen knife. Of course, this would only work because I had gotten the flange off the tub and apart from the insert! If nothing else works for you, perhaps you might try my ole kitchen knife method! LOL Now to add the plumber's putty to the new flange and get it all screwed in well. I was just so excited about getting the drain out, that I had to take a little break before finishing up the job! BTW, I also installed a new diverter and a new tub spout. A good day's work for an old woman, huh? LOL

It's funny that I was wondering how to remove the tub drain because we had water leaking below. I watched another You Tube video and they suggest using a barbell drain tool which I thought was cool but not for a 1 time use. Your method with the needle nose pliers and channel locks was even better since I have both already. The added induction for the WD40 was great. Long story short, the job is done and my better half is happy and I get to clean up the repair area below. Thanks for the posting and keep up the good work. Stay safe, stay healthy, and stay cheerful.

I found the use of Americas cure-all (aka WD-40) letting it soak for 5 minutes and using a set of needle nose vice grips was all that was needed. the key is to the WD-40 soak into the rusted threading and with a smooth and steady turn of the pliers it came right out! thanks for posting!

10 yrs later and I’m another fan. Unfortunately the spokes in my drain were broken. I knew I needed some sort of leverage and what worked for me was the head of my small rubber mallet. It fit with some space around and then I pulled back and was able to get it started unscrewing. My drain was old enough that it snapped, but I got the remainder out w pliers. Was scary for a moment!

this worked for one of my drains!! Had watched a ton of videos making a godawful mess of their drains. Me and a friend watched this video, went straight to the master bath, and the drain came out in 1 min flat. Granted, if it is not really stuck in there, it is a little easier to remove as we discovered. We did try this in the guest bathroom, and it did not work because the drain is really tight on there. So we looking for a plan B. I am hoping I do not have to be the EZ tool for something that will be a one time use. And I would prefer no to tear up my drain.

Found an equal (or better) free solution. Use a regular open end wrench or combination wrench. About 17mm. Should span 2 if the "splines" perfectly. Combo wrench works best as you can just put a strong piece of metal through the hole and turn. This is a solid solution when the hardware store is closed.

This is the tool you will need to extract a drain and not bend your pliers, use a heat gun to heat the drain up, heat it to the point its almost melting your abs or rubber gaskets, its usually the plumbers putty that's hardened and keeping everything from turning, 90% of the time it will turn, if it still doesn't turn you will need to use a sharp chisel and heavy hammer and bang it around till it turns and loosens, after it loosens use the coupler tool to spin it out the rest of the way, if all else fails, use a jig saw and cut slots into the band to release the tension, use the chisel and bang it around till it spins, then use coupler tool to remove. If it still won't turn out after all of these attempts then you will have to cut it off using a sawsall (from under neath the tub) and replace the entire waist and over flow. Keep in mind every time you opt out to replace the drain coupler, you always risk breaking the drain shoe below and result in total replacement of the waist and over flow. I personally replace 1-4 drain couplers every week and know the risk, I replace 10-20 waist and over flows every year. Good luck and remember: everything usually turns easier with heat! :) www.BathtubRenew.com m.homedepot.com/p/HDX-Tub-Drain-Remover-HDX170/204218645/

You posted a great video for the uninstall. The new install is not correct . That rubber washer is to be taken off and used between the bottom of tub and the shoe. You then use plumbers putty around the new drain before installing to the shoe. After complete tightening , remove excess putty. this comment is not meant to be critical, just an add on.

Unfortunately there are mistakes in the installation. The rubber gasket that is on the new tube drain should be removed. It is on the drain for packaging purposes only. The rubber gasket goes between the tube and the drain pipe under the tub. There should be one already in place. After removing the old gasket, you probably will need to install the new one via the access panel to the plumbing of the tub. Just push down lightly on the drain pipe and the gasket easily slips into place. Plumbers Putty should be placed between the new drain and the tub before tightening down.

+Jerry Kerns I think that you are right. A gasket on top of the tub is not needed.

Thanks for the tip on the gasket. I didn't know if I should remove my old one or leave it on and add the new one, so that's why I'm here exploring. The old gasket looks great and is under the tub where you say it belongs, so I will leave that alone and just add my plumber's putty. A 76 yr old woman and still going at it! Thanks!

I did not read all 300+ comments but if I may add....the use of "Plumbers Dope". This is a clay like substance you may want to put between the tub and the NEW flange part of the stopper so when you lower (or screw down) the NEW stopper body....down onto the tub itself, the Plumbers Dope make a water tight seal between the tub and stopper flange. Any of the dope that is squeezed out when compressing the flange is easily wiped away. This will stop leaks.
