Your video is by far the most helpful and informative that I've found so far. Thank you! Several other people have suggested using alcohol. There are three kinds available: 30%, 91%, and denatured alcohol (100 % alcohol and only available at home stores like The Home Depot, in the solvent section). What is your opinion of the alcohol method? One person used crystal clear floor polish instead of water, and she used no binder (it's probably in the floor wax already). What is your opinion of that? Have you made another video yet regarding this same subject?

Wonderful information! Hint: get some stainless steel nail polish mixing balls (be sure they're stainless steel!) to put in your containers. I like 3 in each container. They really help! I got mine on Amazon a couple of years ago and they work great for my home brews of glitter mist sprays and such.

Sasha, invest in some of these: BC Precision brand, 100 - 3/16" Inch Stainless Steel Nail Polish Mixing Agitator Balls and add them to your pots of DIY products. It makes mixing easy! I paid $5.95 USD in 2018 on Amazon and I even add them to any commercial products that didn't already have mixer balls. I use up to 3 balls in a pot or sprayer, depending on the size of the container and viscosity of the product. That magical number 3...always my favorite. They are worth their weight in gold! I love your videos, and you are one of the rare crafters who can chat with us and not drive me to leave your video early. You have an easy, friend next door way about you that is sincere and appealing. Thank you for all of your tips, hints, and techniques!

Thanks for trying all these! I love wink of Stella but it is expensive and doesn’t last long (especially when I squeeze it and out comes half the contents of the pen!) I have iridescent medium. I’ll be ordering the gold and give it a go. I did save all my empty pens and will try to see if there’s anyway to refill them. I’ll let you know. Thanks!

If you don’t have gum Arabic, honey MIGHT be a good substitute (especially if you use a really runny one and use a brush instead of as a spray) since honey is also used as a binder in watercolors. Heating honey makes it runny but I don’t know if it will separate once the mixture cools and settles. A second option is to spray your finished project with cheap hair spray. Also, other companies make iridescent medium that costs less than the Windsor Newton. Thanks Sasha for the comprehensive tests. An additional benefit to making your own is you can use the materials to make other things, like sprays, glitters, and pastes.

The thing that is different about the Windsor and Newton is that it is a watercolor medium. Most other iridescent mediums on the market are acrylic, for use with acrylic paints.. and those probably would be a disaster, just like the acrylic paints that she tried in this video.

That's been a really interesting tutorial, thank you for doing the work and for sharing the downsides as well as the successful experiments. I've been keeping my clear Wink of Stella going a bit longer with tap water but I think I've finally finished the sparkle, on the very last bit of my piece. I wonder if the eyeshadows would work if warm liquid was used, rather than cold? If the particles could break down more effectively, maybe they wouldn't settle so fast. I tried to turn plain eyeshadow into paints, some years ago but it can't have been very successful, because I don't really remember how it turned out.

I noticed that the Wink of Stella also has a bit of glittery look. Yours looks beautiful but more pearlescent. Have you tried adding just a bit of all white fine glitter to the mix?

Maybe I'm not that smart. What are you going to use this on and how. That's what I'm wondering. My wink of Stella is rather clear. I put it on top of things to give them a little sparkle. It doesn't do much. I bought some iridescent additive for acrylic paint. And I have some ink additives that gives a metallic look. You have encouraged come to try those. I don't use much sparkle on my cards. I'm looking forward to seeing you make things with this. A lot of work went into this video. Thanks for all the great videos. I just subscibed. Just found you.😊

I've the iridescent medium and a lot of metallic and interference watercolors also liquid watercolors. I mixed the colors I need and put them in spray bottles so I've my own glimmer/shimmer mist. I also put my mixtures into waterbrush pens but I only use the very cheapy ones and have no issues. Ink refills are basicly the same than liquid watercolors. If you use watercolors you don't need gum arabic 'cause the watercolors have it allready in. 🙂

Hi. I wonder if the eyeshadow would be better if it was mixed with rubbing alcohol? Also, there are water pens that you can put water in the body of the brush. You could fill these with your mixture and add a steel ball to help mix when you shake it before use. I think the solution to the water pen might be to use rubbing alcohol, which will also dry quicker than water.

Hi Sasha, I’ve just found your videos, and I’m loving them! Thank you for all the research you’ve done 🤗. I have a couple of ideas. Gum Arabic is a ‘binder’ my pharmacist told me. It’s obviously used in many different applications, as I’ve learned from you this morning. I use it in a powder form (didn’t know it was available as a liquid) for cake decorating - when making sugar paste for very delicate sugar flowers, as it also makes them stronger. It’s used in cough syrups etc also so your use of it makes perfect sense. I meet once a month with a group of friends to make cards and one lady introduced us all to Wink of Stella. It is really expensive here in New Zealand, so when our pens run out, we refill them a couple of times with IPA - Isopropyl Alcohol. All of the glittery substance (mica?) which remains after the liquid has gone is then reinvigorated. We can manage two refills in this way, but obviously each refill has less sparkle than the previous one - it’s just a way to use all that remains in the bottom of the pen. We had tried water, but found it was not very successful. The IPA however evaporates very quickly and leaves the residue on your project. While I was watching your video I suddenly remembered the IPA and wondered how that would work instead of water - I imagine it would certainly help it to run smoothly, so when my current WoS pen runs out I’ll try your recipe in it, and also in a water brush. One litre of IPA costs less than one WoS pen in NZ so it’s a game changer for me. So, just an idea you might like to try. I’ve got a small jar of white perfect pearls and I put some in a spray bottle which I then filled with IPA as a mist - it works a treat. I’ve looked for the Arteza mica powders which you used, but for some reason, I can’t seems to get them. They do look great though. I’ve been trying to make some coloured mist sprays from the wicks of the beautifully coloured sharpie pens - the colours aren’t very bright, but now I’ll try putting some of the WN Irridescent Medium into the bottles. Thanks for all your ideas Sasha - you given me heaps of new projects to try, and you’ve got me thinking of new combinations at the same time! Awesome, thank you 😎. Hi Sasha, just for your interest, I’ve just searched for liquid Gum Arabic at our local art shop and found that they stock the Winsor and Newton brand of it. The description on the front says ‘Increases Brilliance, Transparency and Gloss.’ Also, I noticed you mentioned distilled water at the beginning of your video. My son started us on it, and I now use it for all drinking and cooking water, and on my face. I was not convinced of its value at the start, but I became a fan when I accidentally left some tap water in our coffee maker which sits in bright sunlight beside my kitchen window. Usually I empty it after each use. I forgot once, and it wasn’t used again for two weeks. When I went to refill the coffee maker, the water was green and slimy in the container 🤢. Out of interest, I sat a small, lidded jar on the windowsill, right behind the coffee maker. Two years later, it is still crystal clear, and I have a water distiller. We go through about 6 litres a day so it’s extremely economical - otherwise I would pay $1.00 per litre to buy it!

@@dinkuminkum Just thought you and Sasha may be interested to know that I too have decorated a few cakes and I aways used the paste food coloring (being very careful to never dip twice, if you know what I mean) But I have made spray inks with equal parts of distilled water and IPA and the food color paste and for a shimmer I have used the Dollar Tree eye shadows or mica powders or my favorite, the iridescent medium.

Ha ha, i didnt realise how many i got through until i was prepping for filming and couldnt find any more! the problem was that i started experimenting but didnt keep track of what each one was that i made the first time! i just got really into it and was creating then when it came to actually planning my video, when i had found the best most realistic ones, i just had this big mess of jars and i had no idea what was what. So i did them all again but made sure to make labels the second time. I wanted to show what each product looked like and how it reacted to making it into a glimmer pen. I just have a lot of stuff in my office it seems....

Very informatve. I love my BLACK Wink of Stella brush...oddly I use it frequently. The colored Wink of Stella brushes are very pigmented....much like your mixture with your Stampin' Up ink mixture at the end of your tutorial.

Sasha it's 2 yrs later that I'm seeing this video. Wow!! Lisa Freeman, a USA Stampin Up demonstrator, makes a shimmer spray with 1 or 2 drops of the S.U. shimmer paint & some isopropyl alcohol in their spritzer tubes. This may also work with a fine brush to use as a 'Wink of Stella' on projects as it dries very quickly. Sasha - One way to make sure that you know what your filming is to put down some paper with a 1" grid drawn on it with each line numbered. Make sure it's slightly bigger than your filming area. Shoot some video to see what your filming and use the numbers as a guide to allow you to mark out the filming area. Maybe create four "registration marks" on paper/plastic that you can temporarily glue down to your work surface so that you know what area your camera "sees".

Your liquid inks look like the dye type for fabric that Tusinieko (I’m sure I spelled that wrong!) ink makes. Same bottles, it looks exactly the same-yes expensive but out there still.

Question, I bought mica powders from Amazon this past week to use them like Brushos on paper. Do u think mica powders are like Brushos in any way shape or form. It’s the powder that u very lightly sprinkle onto paper, then spray water on for a beautiful watercolor effect. Please let me know, haven’t even opened them up yet. Been a bit under the weather.

HI Bonnie, no sadly Mica powder is nothing like Brushos. Brushos are like a powder ink. They are highly pigmented and are designed to react with water(I dont have any but have used them and seen them used). Mica powder is designed to be added to something else to add a bit of pigment or shimmer. They tend not to be as pigmented and can be mixed with water, but they arent designed to react to water if that makes sense? So you can blend them into water or products but they wont do much if you spray them with water other than dissolve into the water. Brushos are like super concentrated ink, spritz them with water and it activates the colour and makes it spread. I hope that helps?

If you replace the water with alcohol your paper won't get as wet or warp as easily and it will dry much faster.

It's a great suggestion however i found when i did that with the gum arabic it made it go chunky and clotted, so i avoided the alcohol after that mess 😳

I just use rubbing alcohol and super fine glitter. The alcohol evaporates almost immediately leaving just the glitter shimmer behind.

yea the problem is having enough of those to use for coloured versions as well. Ive got 1 empty one that i plan to use and fill with my good solution but i wanted to share with people how to get the effect without having to buy the wink of stella or if they cant get one where they live. With Pearl Ex, yes i believe so, I didnt see anything about it being set if you add water, which is what perfect pearls does. So i would assume pearl Ex needs some kind of adhesive additive to make sure it doesnt rub off. Thank you so much for watching and hanging out with me :)

@@SashaReade My understanding is PearlEx doesn't have a binder and Perfect Pearls does. PearlEx just blows away if you add it to paper with water. It's meant to be added to a medium that sticks. Love what you have done, my thought is, have you (once finished) pulled apart or cut open a wink of Stella pen and had a look? It may be something so simple that means the difference of blocking up your pens and not if you get what I mean, you went to an awful lot of trouble, and It's very appreciated my end, but now I want to go and buy a wink of Stella pen and pull it apart now just to see what is so good about them. 😂

It's a very small intricate design. I have no way to replicate the inside of their pens so just made do with what i have :) They are amazing, just so blooming expensive for how fast i could go through them. I LOVE glimmer and shimmer on my projects

My constructive criticism would be lay out the formula first then go through and do all the explaining of what you like best...I showed this to some women in my church group who make cards to send out to people in need of hope in the community & they gave up because you simply "rambled" was their description... They wanted easy organized and clear instructions...I then took 3 minutes mixed the most effect formula in front of them then showed how to mix one with mica powder...I am telling you this not to be mean but because they refused to try anymore of your videos and we went to a different source who was concise, organized, and explained all their different attempts at the end...I hope this helps so you have more people staying engaged and subscribing ...thank you for all your hard work and good luck on building your channel

It is a binding agent. It makes sure the mica doesnt rub off
