VIDEO DESCRIPTION:
It all started back in high school when Paul's father gutted a bus to transport work equipment. The seed was planted when Paul saw his first photo of a converted van while serving in the military, and the official journey took off after a visit to a tiny home festival. After years of research, Audrey and Paul dove into the skoolie life with their 1998 Thomas Saf-T-Liner. This green machine has a massive front living space with an abundance of storage and a gorgeous wood-burning stove. With cooking being a priority, their kitchen boasts plenty of prep space and several drawers keeping the counter area clear. A shower, washer/dryer combo, compost toilet, and open working desk consume the middle of the design. Under the bed is where they keep the 200-gallon water tank and behind the bed is a garage shelf disguised with a beautiful diagonal wooden pattern. The Savor It Skoolie has all of the necessities of a house and the perfect feel of a home!

The great thing about skoolies is that you can make them so personalized. They just seem so much more sturdy. Doesn't look cramped or cheap materials like so many commercially made RVs. I really like the truck boxes instead of built-in storage. Caterpillar is my personal favorite and would be my choice too. Just love the idea of "taking your home with you wherever you go". Great build.

Love the green color! And the home is perfect! I could see my husband and I living very comfortably in a bus. We have off grid land. My dream is a community of family on the property with us, or at least a vacation stop because our land is next to the river. It’s a beautiful area. And perfect for living off the land. I believe this is the answer to having a home no matter what your finances are. You can built as cheaply or as extravagant as your pocket book allows. Currently we have a shed cabin and a short class A. We are thinking about selling the class A to build out a stealth van. For every day use as well as a way to travel to visit our daughter in another state. I will definitely be subscribing to this sweet couples you tube channel. Leslye

The desk with storage has me sold. Love the bathroom and how it matches the green on the bus. I'm so torn on washer/dryer on my build, it's such a necessity yet so bulky and needs lots of power. Decisions decisions 🤔

PROS: I like the purpose. Nice couple. CONS: No offense intended, but this rig is: OVERWEIGHT This is testimony to just how obsolete and out-of-touch present-day Van and RV manufacturers are in the United States. I am an engineer and have some constructive criticism. Every gram of weight counts. Seven issues: 1) NOT ECO-FRIENDLY Too heavy. Not aerodynamic. Low MPG. Poor cornering because of the high center of gravity. Should have big solar to make the claim "Best Quality and Design". People insist on outfitting their rigs with doodads like wasteful showers, heavy wood cabinetry, exterior lights, wasteful water heaters, roof decks, vents, sky lights and ladders. Poor windows. Most RV windows are outdated silicon glass. They should be dual-pane acrylic like in Europe. Insulation is minimal because cockpit is not thermally isolated from living area. Materials are way OVERWEIGHT. The wood cabinetry and doors could be lightened by 50% or eliminated. Should have a SEER 33 split-mini for climate control. It's an camper, not a house. Please care about the environment. 2) EXPENSIVE All of the above doodads cost money that unwitting customers pay for because they do not understand first principals of engineering regarding minimization. The lithium batteries in my rig cost about $1000/usable KWH (KiloWatt Hour). My Tesla battery cost about 8x less. My empty Sprinter van with a BlueTec i4 turbodiesel gets 30MPG, and 25MPG with the camper build at 55 MPH. The van in this video is so overburdened I doubt it even gets 16MPG. Expensive fridge. My fridge costs $195 and is 2x larger. 3) HOT WATER DELAY With a remote hot water heater, it will take up to 30 minutes to get hot water. If the hot water tank is pre-heated, it still may take 30 seconds to get hot water. Meanwhile, much water is wasted. This hot water tank design wasted both water and energy. To resolve this, I installed a true-instant hot water faucet; six seconds for hot water. 4) NOT BOONDOCKABLE Greenwashing: Since there is inadequate solar, fossil fuels must be used to charge the battery and keep the van warm. If it is winter, very little solar power is available. Wasteful water design will require frequent trips to replenish. 5) FOUR-SEASON, NOT Customers camping in the hot summer or cold winter will have issues with energy usage and temperature control due to the lack of insulation and outdated climate control. My Mitsubishi heat pump has a SEER of 33 and can heat down to -13F. A lot of fossil fuel will be needed to stay warm in winter. Water will freeze and burst pipes. 6) CLIMATE CONTROL The choice of outdated climate control will lead to excessive CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) airflow, causing high noise levels. Max air fans are noisy and don’t move much air. Wood heaters emit toxic gas and are high-maintenance. 7) POWER Small battery and inverter are inadequate to power an economical house on wheels. To resolve the above problems, see my Tim's Tips van build at: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6mzm2Vno8iempI
