DIY Chicken Brooder | NOT Cheap
We have been so excited to start settling into our new home so that we can begin now to focus on building structures for the animals we want to have.
Our first task at hand is to build a detailed DIY chicken brooder that can house both chickens and turkeys for the first 21 days of their life.
We knew we needed to build something solid to use for years to come, Joe Salatin's Polyface Designs book inspired us to build the design we chose. We knew we would make modifications because we wanted more flexibility. So, in this DIY chicken brooder video, we show you our process and some challenges we had. We are very pleased with the finished product.

Thats a great brooder idea. We had a tote in our kitchen for our baby birds lol my husband didnt enjoy that.... They did go in the garage for a short amount of time... We need a bigger area for them next time!

We had a huge scare this winter. We had this in the garage, and I guess there's not enough heat for 100 birds and was losing them left and right. We eventually had to put a tote in the house for the first two weeks, then put them in the brooder. Lesson learned to get birds only in the springtime in Texas.

Im curious about these... I just brooded out 700 birds for the first time (it was too early, losses were crazy). I have access to a space in an old barn... not ideal, but something like 12x30 broken into four rooms. The amount of waste was insane, not to mention how big they get and how quickly. When I've been looking at this design, I haven't (yet) actually seen any vids on the thing in use, and the day to day practicalities of brooding your birds in there. Would love to see some of that as you use it.

Which breed did you raise that you had a lot of fatality with? We just put a lot of hatching eggs in our cabinet incubator. So I guess we can do a process from hatch. To brooder. To grass.

After using this brooder a few time now, I would add a trap door like to get all over the deep bedding out of their house. Also, I would add a different flooring substrate for when the birds get messy with their watering dish/bowl.
@TheNakidGardeners
@TheNakidGardeners 2 жыл бұрын
First Saturday lime so far. We do deep bedding while birds are in there and sprinkle it on top before fresh layer is put down and after birds graduate to the grass we will shovel it out to the compost and use the first Saturday lime everywhere in it and allow it to air out. We haven't discovered a better way yet, we are definitely open to alternative ideas if you have any. 😊

We raise about 500 chickens a month (250 in brooders + 250 on pasture). We have been raising them in our brooder shed. But we will be increasing to 1000 chickens a month so I needed more room for them. What I like about these brooders is that you can keep adding on as you get more birds. I’m at the end of building my 1 out of 2 brooders that need to be finished before next week, yikes, and I was having some problems so I turned to KZbin for a solution. We also have 120 laying hens. You are very right….this was not a cheap build. All in all, doing it just like the book I spent $900+ per brooder 😬

@@TheNakidGardeners No I don't have any chickens or animals at the moment other than my best friend, Brownie, my dog ha. Have had all sorts of animals throughout my life though. I plan to get some more chickens at some point though. We moved here two years ago. I am like you, still in the process of getting all my systems in place. I want to get a perimeter fence in first before I build a chicken coop inside that perimeter fence. We have lots of coyotes and ppl that run dogs on deer out here. So good chance that something will or try to get to them. When I get ready though, I will keep this video in the back of my mind. I might have to build one like this, maybe slightly smaller though. Love the looks of it.

It has been a year so I will be surprised if you are still using those little wheels - unless you roll this around on a golf course. This a good video after the closed captions are turned on and the sound is muted. The semirhythmic, synth-techno noise is very nausea inducing.
