I learned aboutshade plants today. The window light in my Apartment is to much fir my romaine lettuce. My peas were not diibg well either, so they went on the counter. My Lemon Balm was drying out so put them in the shade. 12 hours later doing better. Also planting rice so i can grow in buckets with water. Hoping the water will help keep moisture on my patio this summer!!!!

I heard some folks doing rice in the ground without saturated water logged. Would be interested to hear your success with growing it. I'm rooting for you.

Something my mother and aunt taught me about cleaning collards and turnip greens is to start by rinsing each leaf with warm water, preferably under running water. Then get a container big enough to hold your mess (of greens) and enough water to completely cover them. Then--and this was the key step in the process--add a generous helping of regular table salt to the water and stir it well throughout the greens. Don't be stingy with the salt, as the soaking helps destroy any little inedible critters that the first rinse might not have taken care of. Let the greens soak in the salt water for a good spell, meaning at least a couple of hours (and 4-5 hours wouldn't hurt). Then pour off the brine, and rinse the leaves under running water again. If you have the time (and the patience), rinse each leaf thoroughly and separately on both sides. That's the way my people taught me, but me being the particular person I am about some things, I take it one step further: after rinsing off the brine, I rinse the whole mess together at least two more times to make sure the saltiness is eliminated and ensure that the fresh water bath is the last treatment the greens get before they're put into the pot to start making pot-liquor.
