What about a spray-on glaze? That would give you the ease of applying that you got with the hair spray, but should give a similar hardness to nail polish.

I was just about to say something similar! A cheap glossy art varnish would likely work as well. I have a gloss varnish from the brand Francheville that dries very hard and crackly and there's very little odour.

Well, you could wait for it to cool a bit before actually applying it, but that is also something that has to be done in a well-ventilated environment due to noxious fumes. You also want to be very careful with it, as it is a pretty good exothermic reaction that produces heat upwards of 150 degrees (Fahrenheit, I believe, but might be Celcius. BobbyDukeArts measured his, but I can't remember off the top of my head. Still hot enought to hurt.)

For all those commenting about "I can't stand the smell of nail polish" she actually said that the fumes are really strong and she has to apply 5 - 6 coats so she inhales the fumes for quite sometime which is definitely not good for her.

Hi there. I really enjoyed finding out about cracking clay...never heard of it before today. I thought of a few things you might like to try. • Clear Gesso (A generous couple of coats, left to dry) • Yacht Varnish (you might have to try different numbers of layers of this). • Liquid Skin (again, perhaps try this in thin, then thicker layers). • Hairspray Firm control, (This sets quite hard but you will need to use lots of layers) • Super Glue (Use carefully & in different numbers of layers) • Resin (in a thin, then thicker layer) • Clear Gel Nail Polish. • Mens Hair Gel. That's all of the ideas I have for things to try. I hope one of those things works. All the best with your future videos! From a new fan in South Wales. UK.

I also thought of MOD PODGE. That creates a coating that seals things in. Of all the suggestions I made previously, I think this one is by far the best one, because it is meant to be used to seal things, like art work etc. It's super good as a glue/sealer. I can't think of any others.

Her main criteria for choosing alternatives to test was "looks shiny and transparent when it dries" instead of "forms a non-porous hard shell when it dries." It's weird. Just because it looks like topcoat doesn't mean it'll behave the same way. You don't even have to use topcoat. In a previous video she tested out a colored matte nail polish which also worked.

You could always get an air tight tupperware container and fill it with clear nail polish, that way you just dip your clay pieces and set them to dry, just repeat for your next coat. It would be quicker so you wouldnt have to deal with the smell as much and then you can just seal it up for next time you need it.
