So cool. Thanks for capturing the process! I am hoping to do a roaster re-build soon and want to vlog it too as there is not a whole lot out there, but I love watching stuff like this. Also very cool to see a build of this size and quality. I can't weld, so that's a bit limiting for my build, but this looks amazing.
@kylegreenhaw66534 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed the video. What roaster are you rebuilding? One that you made? Learning to weld will open up so many possibilities for you and your projects. I would recommend taking a class or picking up an inexpensive machine and teaching yourself!
@josiahcui70204 жыл бұрын
@@kylegreenhaw6653 Yep, it definitely looks like a bit of a toy compared to fabricated metal drum setups, but you can take a look here: www.home-barista.com/home-roasting/roast-journal-royal-crown-jewel-colombia-san-pedro-t55104.html#p617740 if you're interested. Built it a couple years ago to integrate my sifter/popper setup into a neat and tidy (if unsafe, due to wood construction) package... Going to recycle a lot of its components into a hot air drum setup - for both safety and roast philosophy reasons. Because of not being able to weld (though I would definitely love to learn someday in the future), I'll still be utilizing a lot of off-the-shelf components for the roast drum, outer drum (roast chamber), outer shell, frame, trier, etc...but I'm excited as I think I can pull it off well enough to take a leap forward in roast quality (and quantity), build quality (and safety), and the 'bling factor' of having something resembling a traditional coffee roaster sitting in my garage ;-) Looking forward to your next vids!
@kylegreenhaw66534 жыл бұрын
I checked out your forum thread, very cool write up! I like your data driven scientific approach. I must admit that I'm more of a fabricator than a roaster, I have a ton more to learn about coffee. I've also struggled with baked roasts and flat flavor profiles, but I'm working to improve my batches each time. There's already so many changes I would make to my design since starting the project, but I suppose that's just part of the learning process. I'll be on the lookout for version 2.0 of your roaster!

What did you use for the roasting cylinder/drum?

Thanks dude! I'm using an Alpha TIG200x. I put a Miller WP9 torch on it with a gas lens set up. The nozzle is a #7 and I'm running a 3/32" 2% lanthanated tungsten. Part 2 coming soon!

Upgrading the pedal makes a huge difference, one of the first mods I did. I got mine from HTP, it works great!

Nice work, thanks for sharing. When you are welding, do you leave the gas running until the weld has cooled?
@kylegreenhaw66534 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I have my post flow set at 5 seconds. It will help reduce the amount of oxidation on the weld.

Nice Video Kyle! Where did you get the components to fabricate the roaster, the electrinics for the controls and rhe heating elements?
@kylegreenhaw6653 Жыл бұрын
The raw materials and mechanical bits were mostly sourced from local suppliers and McMaster carr. I got the heating elements from Mor Infrared. The electronics came from Amazon and eBay.

Awesome work man! Im building a roasting machine now, I would like to know how much volume should the drum have in order to roast 5 kg of coffee. Thanks!
@kylegreenhaw66534 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t really consider myself an expert on the subject, but my drum is designed to roast about 500g of coffee and the drum itself could probably hold 3x that. I feel like that gives the beans enough room to expand plus provide enough extra space for better convection. So yeah, maybe 2x or 3x the volume you expect to roast.

Where did you order your 3/8 D shaft and bearing plates from?

The shaft and bearings were purchased from McMaster Carr. I machined the blocks from a chunk of aluminum. 3/8” are not readily available. I would go with 1/2” if I was to do it again.
