Have you tried (very carefully) using a blade on a mandolin? I have....place the cap against the blade and turn. It cuts it into a spiral like a pencil sharpener...you get nice long strips to work with. I find it's less straining on my hands.

What a great idea,its like plastic lampwork!!!,looks very effective,,but what can you do if you don't have a heat gun,as they can be expensive,,any ideas on that welcome ,subscribed for more I just have to find out if you done any more bigger ones in nice colors 🌹🌸🌻🌺🌼👍🌈
@ChildOfAnAndroid8 жыл бұрын
You can get a heat gun for under £15, less second hand, though I understand that that is still expensive a lot of the time. You can give it a go with a hairdryer, or possibly melting them in hot water. I'm not sure how safe or effective those would be, however. Use the thinnest possible plastic if using a hairdryer.

Is there a place I can buy these in bulk? This a great idea! I am a Girl Scout Brownie leader and my daughter is having a party for her troop. If we could make these into bracelets, it would be a great lesson in the wonderful things you can do with recycling. I just don’t have time to make 24 bracelets before the party and the recycled bracelets I find online are $20 or more. If I can find these recycled beads, we could make the bracelets as an activity.

You need at least 180 degrees Celsius, so the hair dryer can work, but some plastic will not melt, depend on fillers. So look at your hair dryer technical data... some may work, some don't.

can you iron the strips then fold the into the ball with heat gun same way
@libbyreesbarresi74597 жыл бұрын
just wondering how much the electric cost to make one bead?! this might be fine if you are making something for yourself and want a particular colour or shade, but if you were crafting to sell, its going to get very expensive. heat guns use up a lot of electric
@element727 жыл бұрын
I do not think that the electricity cost is the biggest part you have to invest. It's important to be skilled and invest time ... I can not say anything in general but I can sell 1 piece for $ 0.60 and in bulk as low as $ 0.40 (but quantity is limited) all with profit. It depends on how you look at it 3 x 5 = 15 but also 5 x 3 = 15. But I'm sure you will never be a millionaire if only doing these beads. It's a mix of hobby and art. Thanks for comment.
@occipitalneuralgia23396 жыл бұрын
Libby Rees I think if you want to make a specific custom bead or size, this is absolutely amazing. No one in a first world country would think of making these in bulk! But a super oversized bead, or an unusual shape, or exact color combo, why not?

Do you thinking wearing silicone gloves (possibly backwards if they working side has bumps or ridges) would allow for rolling the bead into shape using your fingers on the palm of your hand or just fingers?
@element727 жыл бұрын
With fingers you have better control what you do, I never try it with gloves, but not bad idea for someone with heat sensitive fingers. But how will your idea works... I'm not sure.
@mamascorpio7 жыл бұрын
Element. I'm thinking of silicone oven gloves. the kind that are advertised to be able to be used to take stuff ofd a blazing hot grill. they may be too bulky though but it seems like by name a thinner version would exist. just something that would allowing one to.roll the freshly melted plastic on.rhe palm of the hand or between fingers without blistering and burning. #shrugs
@element727 жыл бұрын
Silicone rubber can withstand temperatures from -55 °C to +300 °C so it is possible to use gloves from this material.
@pennytristram14122 жыл бұрын
Has anyone successfully made these with gloves on? It's really fiddly to wind the plastic neatly. But without gloves it's too hot!

@geraldinebecher77027 жыл бұрын
Ok out is a lovely bead. How much time did it take to make? About 8 minutes. How much electric $ did it cost. All in all that is an expensive bead. Now before anyone starts yelling, yes it's a nice way to recycle, yes it's nice if you have the time, yes it's nice to have an original product. As I said the beads are lovely. Just costly and time consuming to make.
@jessiesmum1696 жыл бұрын
geraldine becher you can use a candle instead of the heat gun, that way you are not using electricity. Still very time consuming, but if it is a labour of love you don’t mind 😊

That was cool. Could you just use clear plastic caps on like most cheap water bottles and just paint them with nail polish? And could you actually cut the bottle it's self into the very thin strips and paint then do this same technique. Or is the bottle it's self to thin. Thank you for any help.
@element726 жыл бұрын

is a heat gun bassicaly a hair dryer?
@element728 жыл бұрын
No, hair dryer has a low temperature from 55 up to 100 °C it depends on model. Heat gun produces temperature from 300 up to 500 °C. Best results are obtained when HDPE is molded at temperatures ranging from 200 up to 240 °C.

That's a lot of electricity to make one bead. Can it be done in the microwave?
@element727 жыл бұрын
You use plastic container in microwave, mostly is made from PP and nothing will happen. Some HD-PE may be reinforced with strengthening chemicals to prevent the plastic from melting in the microwave.
@gracefromglaur54886 жыл бұрын
You could also try using a hot glue gun to help melt the plastic instead of using the type of hair dryer looking thing.
