Great video, I remember I use to ride with a guy who had a 200* KTM 525, he only checked the valves once every 6 months and adjusted them once a year, his bike never skipped a beat, I guess KTM changed to Titanium valves?

I like my new 2019 KTM 500 more and more as I find it easy to work on and it is amazing to ride :) On my WR450 I could not even the the tank of to repair a flooding carburettor even with help... After that I sold it...

Looking at buying a 500 ktm with 5000 miles..valves never been checked. What,happens if you don't check valves?
@dougiequick15 жыл бұрын
That many miles is top end overhaul I imagine (actually pretty darn sure!) ....piston lasts 100 hours right? At AVERAGE of 50 miles an hour that is 5000 miles in 100 hours if my off the top o my head math is right ....yes? 50 miles in one hour= 500 miles in 10 hours multiply by 10 (for 100 hours) =5000 miles. Now in the dirt who is averaging 50 mph? Cause if the average is considerably less then 5000 miles could even be 200 hours....if it were all freeway 75mph then maybe there would only be 75 hours on the bike ....but WHO buys a ktm 500 exc to ride on the freeway?? ....regardless if was ME? I'm pulling the whole top end off and pretty certain I'm replacing the piston....inspecting and hopefully just honing the cylinder....HOPEFULLY the original owner changed the oil 20 times or so ...if not? DAMN I hope the bottom end is okay!! But if the piston is not really ugly then maybe that is indication the oil was changed regularly ....scary to buy a 4 stroke race bike without knowing for sure it was maintained! If I was not REAL sure as in shop receipts? I would have to assume it was abused and factor in the cost of a total engine rebuild subtracted from the price ...these bikes are unlike commuter vehicles that can go many thousands of miles between oil changes ....failing to do oil change per factory schedule qualifies as ABUSE... Best case scenario is to buy from an old guy who insists he was meticulous and produces a pile of receipts for oil or shop receipts for them doing it...and hopefully he was a SLOW old guy too ....worst case scenario you buy it from a younger guy and it has bald tires broken levers,stretched out kinked up dry chain, is filthy and the guy has no receipts and offers nothing in the way of maintenance assurance .even worse if he is 3rd owner or not sure how many owners there have been ...maybe just raves about how carefree and reliable the bike is and how damn fast it is etc or how sick of burn outs it does....a neglected race bike (ktms ARE race bikes) is a potential nightmare ....count on total rebuild....con rod, (lower end rebuild) all new bearings and seals .... piston cylinder etc ...knock a grand off for parts! minimum! crap shoot!

You did NOT show ANY "adjustment" like the title of the video suggests ....checking clearance does NOT qualify as "adjustment" ....no? Secondly I don't understand how you can check a clearance with only one feeler gauge? Just because it has clearance for the one blade? Okay so it had not become too tight ..yes but how do you KNOW it is not too loose? Or is that not possible due to design? huh?? I mean it CAN be too MUCH clearance I assume? Or do you just trust the factory so much you feel it is impossible? Really? I am assuming all it can do is tighten up as the hours progress and not open up? I'm trying to understand HOW only one feeler guage can possibly tell me the maximum gap of something? ALL you know is that the clearance is not LESS than the blades that slid in....right? ....please add some correction to your video! Change to "how to CHECK valve clearance" and get rid of word "adjust" because you do not do this ...AND confess that you neglected to check how MUCH clearance you have ..all you did was make sure it was not LESS than the minimum ....you could really screw someone up trusting you I think
