G'day mate, nice looking chopping board, I personally don't use pine in my boards and I always wet the boards down to stand the grain up and resand to get it smooth. That's so when you wash it it won't feel furry but all in all great video. Good to see another video from Australia

That looks great Robin! The laminated boards even give the end of the board a great look, giving me ideas. Thanks

Thanks mate. Yeah, I only really noticed it after I'd cut the ends off, it was a bit of a happy accident

I think your little accident recently gave Robin a bit of an idea for a very large push block for his jointer. 🙄

I'm hoping to get to my first chopping board done in 2018. I've really been wanting to build one. I don't have a thickness planer so it will be a bit more work, but should be a lot of fun. Yours is fantastic!

Thanks! Get the hand plane out, spend a bit more time, it'll be awesome

Nice looking cutting board! I think you'll find that the pine holds up better than most people think. I made a pizza peel out of nothing but 2x4's about two years ago, and it is holding up just fine. And we cut on it too with a cutting wheel. Merry Christmas, Robin!
@RobinLewisMakes7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bruce. I've bought some pine kitchenware in the past and it's absolutely fine. Every couple years I'll run it through the thicknesser just to remove the cut marks and freshen it up, but other than that there's nothing wrong with it. Have a great Christmas

Everyone loves to make a nice chopping board. It's one of those projects which is enjoyable and pretty much a guaranteed success. Did the orange oil that you used retain its odour after a few days? Merry xmas, take care.
@RobinLewisMakes7 жыл бұрын
The shop kept the smell for ages from the rags, but the board lost the smell after 24 hours, soon as the it was fully dry. Stoked to have finally made one!

do you have a table saw? If no, how are you going without one, and do you plan on purchasing one in the future?

The cutting board will look way better if you use dark wood as the main component and a little bit of light wood as contrast instead. Awesome work though, could not build that myself.

Why aren't dowels/dominos/biscuits used in between the boards? Is a good quality glue enough?
@RobinLewisMakes6 жыл бұрын
The glue alone is strong enough, provided it's given time to cure. The glue that I'm using (this applies to most wood glues) is "stronger than wood" once it cures, according to the label

Suggestion: Why dont you cut out the ends of the fruit bowl and set it on some stands shaped as an "X" .... X X I think it look way better. Really nice cutting board!

Cool project. Now you need to make your own stamp to burn your logo onto your work...
@RobinLewisMakes7 жыл бұрын
That’s a really good idea!
@oliverdelica22896 жыл бұрын
Uh, pine isn't hardwood
@misfitramone3 жыл бұрын
Please don't use softwoods in cutting boards they're very likely to go rancid on you. Even some hardwoods aren't suitable because of their open pore structure.
@misfitramone3 жыл бұрын
Btw i don't like being that guy, I just don't want people getting sick from something going rancid on em. I have had food poisoning a couple times in my life and it's awful and if I can prevent that for anyone else I will try! We all need to be as healthy as possible in these trying times.
@RobinLewisMakes3 жыл бұрын
@@misfitramone Of course, no offence taken. It's good advice, the more of it the better. I've learned so much through the comments, hopefully others can benefit too

@@RobinLewisMakes glad to put the info out there, some people take things the wrong way and get offended. I've been that person myself so I like to clarify, because talking face to face or over the phone things are a bit more obvious then in writing. But I also wanted to say I'm enjoying your videos and glad to be a part of the community. Keep the videos coming!
