Good idea and very useful to have an additional layer of safety in case of flyaways. However, if you want to test your signal boosters and experience some real interference you should fly near TV antennas or better (I should say “worse”) a mobile cell antenna. A constant 50/60 Hz electromagnetic field is too far in frequency from the one used for the drone transmission frequency. The higher frequency of TV and mobile radio frequencies, with their highly modulated radio waves, cause potentially major interference with the controller’s signal. And one more thing... the parabola focuses the signals in one point (the focus) only if the direction of said signals are parallel with the axis of symmetry.
@alvaromurillo95764 жыл бұрын
This is so true Can’t fly mine further than 1200f away... why? cuz there’ is a big ass 5g antena near my house it is in the mountain but still affect a-lot my flying range 😓

DOH! I can’t believe I didn’t think of that one. I know of a couple places that would have those types of antennas near and so I will need to keep that in mind for the future. Also, I appreciate the correction on my parabolic design scientific explanation. Thanks!

I have tried using parabolic boosters with my FAA 5.8 ghz Mavic Mini in open area without wifi interference and could never really see where they helped. But I also have the Yagi 5.8ghz boosters and have found them to help. I by no means am and expert in wifi transmission but this is what I believe is the reason the Yagi is superior to the parabolic in open field environments. The parabolic will focus the transmittal beam in a narrower band than without it therefore helping cut through the noise to the drone receiver. But where I believe the issue really lies is with the drone's transmit signal back to the receiver. This is where I believe the Yagi come into play. I believe they are quite a bit more capable of capturing the faint signal from the drone than the stock antenna and the parabolic. As I said I fly in a open environment void of wifi signal and have achieved greater fpv distance with the Yagi than either stock or with parabolic extenders.
@carsonmtech4 жыл бұрын
I have heard a couple people talk about the Yagi boosters - I’ve never tried them myself before. I may need to go pick some up and try them out!
@tonyowen1164 жыл бұрын
Nice job Carson. I did appreciate your hands -on demo of making this booster. Put the video in my Like folder, so I can get back to the info, should I decide to make one myself. I do have a Ultimax Parabolic range booster. I've tried it out in the past with both my Platinum and 2 Pro. Not sure if it did anything. But tomorrow, I'll be flying around my friends ranch and orchard. Where I launch from, trees can become a bit of an issue - depending on altitude. Even at 60' AGL, it can be a bit dicey (at least in my mind), even though that puts me at least 35 feet above tree line. Just have to keep in mind, that the signal is no longer radial, but more directional, so I need to keep the controller pointed in the direction of where the drone is. Perhaps I might be wrong on the signal direction..... Hmmmmm...... Ciao
@carsonmtech4 жыл бұрын
Tony, yes, the direction of your controller compared to where the drone is is certainly important with this booster on. Just one more thing to think about, but I think it’s worth it! Have a great day
@avrahamreiss32583 жыл бұрын
I've just made the extender as per your instructions. Your instructions were clear and worked perfectly! As opposed to the standard parabolic extender sold on the web, yours leaves room for addition of the yagis, i.e. using parabolic and yagis together. One video (don't remember whose) has tested and proven that the combination of parabolic and yagis gives a better result, i.e. greater range, than using one of the two by themselves. Haven't yet tested - but well done!
@zisismzk74 жыл бұрын
Buddy you have done an awesome job with that project and thousand thanks for giving the pdf file for free! Also I would like to say that even if you warp the rectangular piece with the foil, inside-out it will still work.. the signal waves will pass through the paper, bounce on the metal surface of the foil and go to the antennas.. A part of the wave's strength might be absorbed in the paper but it's not that big of a deal.. By the way... if you are a DIY guy you can try to make yagi antennas for signal boost! Just read how yagi antennas work and since you know the transmissions frequency you can do it! Be aware the yagi antennas are extremely directional and if you actually build them, when you test them out ALWAYS point at your drone! Also you can just ignore me 😋 but still thanks for the template!!!!

Obviously this is a bit late in the day, but just a quick thanks for all your great videos. Always wanted a quality drone, but having too many hobbies already and not enough time, I've only ever had sub 100£ ones. Great fun and excellent way to learn. However, I've just moved into the middle of Wales (UK) where my nearest neighbours are 1 mile away and am surrounded by beautiful (but wet rolling hills) so now seemed the right time to invest. With the Mini 2 out, 'barely used' Mavic Mini 1 fly more's are available for 300£ (from sensible sellers of course). This represents a saving of 250£ compared to the latest version!!! So forewarned of all the 'features' I have took the plunge but must admit to my disappointment at just how bad the wifi connection can be. Despite being in the middle of almost nowhere with the nearest town 10 miles away, the connection really struggles for more than 500 meters I will persevere with various set up options suggest by yourself and others and make one of these most awesome extenders (mine already include the aerial type extenders) but I have a few days testing to do but may yet return it and get generation 2 mini in 2021 Thanks again for taking the time to make these videos, tutorials, pdf's etc etc. Wishing you a more kind and prosperous 4 years after that most hateful manbabywithtinyhands! Hey nice I’m glad you DIY these i been waiting for someone to make them but I still curious what if you make it 50% bigger? Will the range increase significantly? Or if someone knows more any reason why will not work? Any way thanks for the vid buddy!
@carsonmtech4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! As far as making it bigger goes, like I mentioned in the physics behind how this works portion of this video (towards the end), the size of this is incredibly critical. If you made a booster that was 50% larger for each antenna, first of all, you likely wouldn’t be able to fit them both on this controller, but also, the parabolic design would need to be changed up. This specific parabolic design is meant for this size of print and if you made it larger, it would no longer work as intended since the reflective nature of the booster would no longer work as designed.
@SteveGuidi Жыл бұрын
You can make it bigger, but... 1. You need to follow the curvature of the parabola (as defined by its equation) so that signals continue to bounce to the same focal point (where the antenna is situated). 2. You can make it taller than the antenna, but that would be impractical since there is no antenna at the extended focal points to receive the signal. I'm basing my notes above on the mathematics of parabolas and their focal points. There is very likely a practical or "good-enough" size to get reasonable gains, and Carson's size is probably very close (if not ideal) to that since there are two adjacent antennas on the controller to consider. You could leverage a wider reflector for a drone that has a single antenna on the controller.
