DIY Dog Food Toys - Boredom Busters - Environmental Enrichment - Dog Training

Hi everyone!

You can make a variety of different dog food toys from items you find around the home or that can be purchased from a local hardware store.
Home made food toys are a great way to provide mental stimulation for your dog to help keep boredom at bay. Make sure you rotate the toys to keep the interest in the toys.
There are various videos on how to make the toys similar to the ones featured in this video (e.g. CrazyRussianHacker) but if you would like me to show you how to make them I will post a video for you - just let me know.

I used a plastic peanut butter jar in place of the PVC pipe and it has held up suprisingly well. The bottles I have not tried yet but to save on building you can put it on the bottom rod of a clothes drying rack or put suspend it on a rope between two chairs. My dog loves the card board boxes soft drinks are packaged in. even w/o the food inside. thanks for the tips.

I have used washed propel amd similar bottles for my puppy. 1 way with no holes and lids screwed tight. He chews and tosses it around. Once he squishes it I toss it. Great for the hot or bad weather days to get some energy out. 2) Same type of bottle and I use xacto to cut a cpl small square holes. I use this around his dinner time if I am trying to finish something for work.

I've been using the toilet roll one for ages and just get a plastic bottle and stab holes in that put treats in it and put the lid back on instead of buying piping

My Lhasa Apso girls have a couple of games of their own design. When I give out biscuits or treats they grab theirs and run off to different areas in the house to munch and then come running back for more. When they're done eating they'll still come running for more and then run back to pretend dig and hide these under sofa cushions or even in plain sight!

The ones without paper, cardboard and plastic tape are great! However, the printed cardboard, paper and plastic tape pieces are all very dangerous for pets to ingest and also pose choking hazards! Maybe make the video without the dangerous ones.

It took her five minutes to make the box toy and it took the dog less than five seconds to rip it open

I would suggest paper towels in the place of newspaper just because the ink tends to transfer quite a bit and you don't want fido to get poisoned or anything. >.>

I have a labrador(10 months old) and he eats paper as well,what should I do? I just want him to differentiate between what he is supposed to eat and what he is not.

Vibhor Jain if your dog already eats paper then don't use the cardboard based food toys. You can use any of the other ones though or even set up a biscuit scramble (throw his dry food on the ground for him to find) or hide food treats for him to find.

Not sure about the use of sellotape on the boxes. Dogs or puppies could choke!!!!

What kind of food you give to your dog that make him to try hard to get it? My dog is not interested in dry dog food. I have bought different brands for him but he doesn't go crazy about any dry dog food.

We use the Australian brand Black Hawk but to be honest, he loves food so much that it could be pretty much anything! If you would like to use dry food based food toys I would suggest adding in a few treats to make it a bit more interesting and see if that helps.

La mejor! Also good quality cat treats. They contain higher meat amounts. I mixed them in with dry dog food and he eats it all.

perhaps .5 cm cubes of cheddar cheese. i haven't made any of these toys yet but i use little cheddar cubelets to train my dog to good effect. little chunks of dried salmon would probably be odoriferous enough to entice, or dehydrated anchovies or sardines.

Do you know with all these gadget become a destroyer? he or she will destroy everything to get the treat.

I have never seen a dog become a destroyer unless they are bored. With enough physical and metal stimulus, which this is they do not find things just to eat. The main difference being that the treat or food used will not be hidden in other objects.
