DIY Doll Boutique Fashion Shop | Sylvanian Famlies Town | Calico Critters | Cardboard Dollhouse

A cardboard store building for Calico Critters and similar sized figures, designed to stack with existing sets. The back wall can be removed and flipped over to expand the floor. The curtains and sign are also removable, thanks to poster putty. That way I can use this building as something other than a boutique. Other than cardboard, the bricks and trim are made from craft foam. My thin cardboard strips started to separate and buckle after I painted them, I've had that happen with thick boxboard too, so I switched to white craft foam to finish the trim.

Incredibly fine work, as always. The brick siding looks great incorporated with the other buildings. You could make a huge town. Do you ever have any problem with the cardboard warping after you paint it? I found that when I apply a base coat that has some mod podge mixed in to dollar store foam board I use for floors and buildings, it has helped with warping after painting.

Thank you. If I had the free time and space I'd love to try to build my own town from scratch. I have had cardboard warp when I cover one side with paint or glue and it's too thin or not dense enough, which is one reason why I make my walls 2 layers thick. That also makes it more sturdy. I haven't noticed any warping with the boutique because of the layers and the fact that the individual pieces aren't that big. The foam board wall/floor piece has scrapbook paper glued to both sides which balances it so it hasn't warped either. In the past when I don't layer my boards and I paint only the front side I will brush the back side with water to help balance the paper shrinkage. I will have to try the mod podge trick some time.

Thanks. The boutique is about 10" wide, a little over 6.25" high including the roof and floor, and 4" deep. The front window and door wall pieces are around 3"x5.5" and the narrow window walls are 1"x5.5". The side walls are 4"x5.5". In hindsight I would have made it less tall so that it lined up more with the designer studio.

This is my dream, to be able to make my own buildings and accessories and clothes so that I can create my own town and stories. If you wouldn't mind me asking, how did you get the door to swing open and closed?

The door is 2 layers thick. In between the layers I glued strips of cardstock to act as hinges. The other end of the cardstock is glued to the building underneath the door frame.

@@Winter_Rose13 You're welcome. There are a few other ways I know of to attach doors. One is to put straight pins or toothpicks partially through the top and bottom of the door and poke the other ends of the pins into the doorway. Another is to use cut straws. You can also get a little bag of tiny metal hinges online for a decent price.

I used craft foam to do the brick wall. I think it's also known as EVA foam. It was either 1mm or 2mm thick.
