Anything used properly is ok. I use tie stalls. When my horses come in each day from pasture or paddock to feed, harness etc they go to a tie stall. I grew up in tie stalls and I use them as I was taught. Our teams work 6 days a week, we have some that are in training and some are broodmares. Every morning they come into a tie stall, some to be groomed, some to harness, train, brushed the morning starts in a tie stall. The teams that are being used will be harnessed in the tie stall, at lunch or during breaks they go back to the tie stall. Those in training they go back to the tie stall in between training. Colts and fillies learn at a young age with their mom to go into a tie stall. All of our animals go back out to pasture in the evening, if we are going to get an ice storm or a cold harsh rain they gladly come back to the tie stall where they get their blanket and some hot mash for the night. Our teams learn patients, they are calmer when we transport, they are more patient when tied no matter where we are. So I will leave you with this, any apparatus that compliments the animal makes their life safer and easier is a good thing - when used properly.

You know horses are awake 22 hours a day, so basically they stand there for hours doing nothing all night

He said the length is 6'' from the front the manger. Is that front being the back wall or front meaning the portion nearest the horse? Looking to possibly build something similar.

In the old days when we used standing stalls (which we no longer do because they are cruel), but in those days, instead of tying them in, we left their heads free and had a rope across the back to keep them from backing out. It worked really well. But at this point, I do not approve of standing stalls - this is an inhumane way to keep our magnificent horses.

Not cruel nor inhumane. A lot of ppl now a days uses this to feed there pasture horse separately. Regardless say what you want but these horses are fit and looks very well taken cared for.

@@DestinyonDemand But these are not pasture horses only coming in to eat. They live in these stalls all the time when not working. They cannot walk around - all they can do is stand there all night, all the time when not working. For feeding pastured horses, this is fine, but this is not the case here.

They can lay down in tie stalls lie comfortably. Horses are not meant to be stalled 24/7. Its cruel if they are not turned out for at least 10 to 12 hours.

I'm sorry but this is a horrible way to keep horses. Where I live this is actually forbidden and considered animal cruelty. So sad that this is still accepted in other countries, especially ones that aren't 3rd world countries.

I understand your sentiments but this is pretty much standard for draft horse training and keeping. There are very sound reasons behind it. One is draft horses must learn to be patient and settled. This will do that. Horses allowed to do their own thing will tend to be flighty and their inquisitive nature will get them into trouble. If that happens when they are hitched to a wagon, plow, printer implement, there are huge risk for the animal and humans involved. These animals do not spend every waking hour tied in a stall, they are kept in pastures like every other horse but when they are haltered and tied they begin to feel as if they are at work, just as when they are hitch but standing still. They are not left totally unsupervised, especially at first. Draft horses are not simply pets, they are tools as well. In fact even riding horses should be taught to stand tied for their safety and the earth of everyone who happens to be near them.

The land where tails are still docked and horses put in standing stalls..............The last time I saw a foal tied to the wall was thirty years ago at a horse butcher's stable in France. It broke my heart ! ! ! Isn't it time to join the 21st century and keep horses the way they're supposed to be kept ? This is cruelty to animals ! This type of stall is only acceptable if the horses are in it to feed grain and then turn them back out. Let's just hope that's the case here. It would have to be a sad existence having to stare at a wall all day long. UNTHINKABLE ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
