I just don't know what to say my expectations for this machine were much lower, I am impressed by what this small and cheap machine is capable of! The last test that I have to do is to try milling aluminium with it, but I am afraid that I will destroy it :)
What we will need, amount in ():
-Dremel tool
-Aluminum Profiles 20x20x600mm (5): goo.gl/DtTTiD
-12mm rod (about 2 meters): goo.gl/QKg2bN
-500mm long trapezoidal lead screw 8mm (2): goo.gl/paVrpV

I always wanted to have one of those fancy CNC machines that can mill metals. It's cool and it gives you so many possibilities for next projects! I already have few ideas for projects with a CNC machine :)

You are an inspiration for me... I have had small machine tools for 50 years now (lathe, vertical mill, shaper etc.) I enjoy CAD software, and love Fusion 360. Recently I bought an Ender-3, and I have been having a ball with it. The next step is obviously a small CNC mill/router/engraver... your videos have made me realise that I just need to get off my butt and DO IT!! Thank you so much. :o)

I love this type of projects! And this one in particular just got to the top of my list (it's a very short list ... as I'm a programmer so pretty much the opposite of a handyman :)). I'm currently working on a DIY high-speed centrifuge for separating heavier pollutants from usable fluid (in my case resin particles from IPA, but I took the design from a waste oil processing centrifuges), and to be spin by a Dremel (4300). Since I recently realized that the centrifuge radius increases effective Gs linearly, but RPM increase is by its square (ie exponentially), and when I remembered that I already have a Dremel (I rarely use otherwise) I understood that I can scale down the centrifuge drum, and use the high RPM of the Dremel to get high effective Gs. For example I'm planning on ~7cm drum radius (as my 3D printer has small printing volume, Mars 3), but with ~10,500 RPM (which is ~ a third of the Dremel's max) I'll get ~10,000 Gs !! I actually suspect that the limiting factor would be the strength of the material (a though 3D printing resin - I'll have to experiment a bit with this before I recommend specific resin/or combo/). I've seen that the CD/DVD discs (which are about the same radius, but from considerably stronger polycarbonate!) shatter at ~22,000 RPM, so for now I'm planning to reach ~10,000 RPM, but might have to scale down if necessary. However such a CNC machine can allow me to make larger and stronger centrifuge drum! :) So this project got in the top of my TODO list! :)

Glad to see the final product! I am currently working on a version of this using my old 3D printer frame and guts, and the Arduino/control board you are using was perfect! However, the PSU mount you made for it has the holes in the wrong places. I didn't realize this until after I printed it out, so I am going to have to adjust the STL to make it line up correctly. Other than that, this has been a great series! Congrats! :)

Nice job, Niko. One use for small CNC machines is carving out traces on printed circuit boards. The Cu sided PCB blank can be engraved with the mill bit. If the bit is small enough, I suppose even the small spacings of surface-mount boards could be milled out. This is a much cleaner way than masking and chemical etching for making boards. Because the underlying fiberglass/epoxy composite (used for the better boards) dulls steel tools quickly, tungsten carbide bits are used and even these must be replaced periodically. Cheap drill bits can be purchased on eBay or Amazon; though I don't know about flat milling bits. Another thing. If you make a base with a gridwork of holes, there are ways of holding your pieces with dogs screwed into the holes. I believe that this is how the pros hold their thin pieces down when milling them. If you use a steel plate for a base, perhaps you can use magnetic dogs to hold your pieces. Happy making!

It was great to see it in action. It seems like it works very well with the refinements you implemented. I keep my CNC in my basement. I wouldn’t want all that dust near my 3D printers. Perhaps you could make a vacuum attachment and/or a plexiglass cover to contain the dust and maybe reduce the sound a little.

I have a feeling though, that there is much more skilled fellow Polish folks that hacks great projects like this but we don't hear from them so often and I wonder why is that so. Is it like we are shy or something? Come one guys, spread the word (or prove me wrong).

there are some dremel extensions that are flexible where it can hold the bit on its end so the dremel can be hanged somewhere else. if you use that kind of extension instead of mounting the bit directly into the dremel, that could prevent any possible damage towards the dremel itself.

IMPRESSIVE! I did know that you won't give up this interesting project. I had some doubts about the dremel's holder mechanical stability (you need time to measure it though and fix would be just a reprinting parts away). You fixed those last issues and explained how. Thank you very much Nikodem. It's a great job and I plan to build one based on yours (an integral copy actually). The acrylic section is perfect and likely precise compared to wood. You took your time but this is an achievement dude!

I hope all who build and use Niko's budget CNC know that MDF dust is REALLY BAD FOR HUMANS. How you CNC AND contain the dust is up to the user BUT it must be done.
