Nice job. Dust separators are one of the greatest inventions ever conceived for woodworkers. Even basic, less efficient separators are still miles ahead of just using vac bags. I use a dust deputy 2.5; it's the most efficient separator available, but that efficiency comes at the cost of having a unit that's taller and takes up a good bit more space compared to the dustopper. About your setup now, it's worth putting a bag in the vac still. All that fine dust that went to the filter in your test would be confined to the bag and your filter would stay pristine and maintain as much airflow as possible. It would literally be years until you have to change your vac bag as long as you keep up on emptying your waste bucket. Also, if you find yourself emptying that bucket more often than you'd like, you can build a scrap bin of your own design. Keep it up! Good content. Subscribed. 👍

Thanks! Yea I was pleasantly surprised how well this worked! I’ve got one hooked up to my miter saw as well. Yea I put a new bag in the shop vac after I filmed this video. I just wanted to see how much dust was separated first without a vac bag. You’re right, it’ll probably be years before I need to swap out that vac bag! 😃 Thanks for subscribing - I really appreciate it!

Will do something similar with my 1F...uhhh, when I finally get it set up and the enclosure built-so many projects so little time. Thanks for the informative video!

Think this could work with a table saw as well?

Definitely, I don’t see why it wouldn’t. I have another one hooked up to my miter saw and it does a great job.

Should the shop vac be ok running for such a long time? Won't it burn out?

It might burn out eventually but until I get a dedicated dust collector, this will work lol. I bought this on marketplace for $40 so if it goes, I’m not out too much

@@DoingWhatever Do you think adding a Router Variable Speed Control Dial to run the shop vac on lower speed might increase the life and reduce sound. I was thinking of running that experiment. It just cost 18 bucks :D

Possibly! To be honest, I had never heard of the item you mentioned - had to look it up! Lol Might be worth a try!

I normally go the other way, asking myself why I’m designing this part for my CNC or printer when I could manually make one much faster.

of course the obvious question is if you can run that vacuum without bags then why were you buying bags for it in the first place? You could have saved all your money by just not using the bags.

So I’m far from an expert, but the way it’s been explained to me when I’ve taken classes for lead and asbestos replacement (basically fine dust removal for contractors) is that shop vacs themselves aren’t actually air tight and sealed. So even though you could have hepafilter next to the motor, you likely will get additional leakage of fine dust particles. The goal is to produce a couple of layers of protection to ensure the entire system is either hepa rated or as close as possible. Now you may be saying this is wood and not asbestos, but fine wood dust is considered just as bad because of the glues and other chemicals in manufactured wood. This does innately create some loss of vacuum, which has to be balanced in any system.
