DIY e46 secondary air pump check valve and vacuum line replacement.

This is a quick video on how to replace a check valve and vacuum line. It's not hard just have to move a few things out the way just to get your hands to fit. Enjoy!

The vacuum lines behind the Intake Manifold (where it's always hot) crack easily. They are really hard to access. Especially at the manifold vacuum ports. My 325i has them way back underneath the intake manifold. You can use a mirror to see the ports. And you can (with great difficulty) use an x-acto knife to remove the cracked hoses (2 of them) from the metal tube. But it's difficult to push the new vacuum line onto these ports. TRICK: I pushes a 12 " clothes hanger inside an 8" piece of vacuum hose. Aligned the hose into the center of the metal vacuum port line. Then slid the vacuum line down the clothes hanger and onto the metal port tube. The electrically controlled vacuum valve is difficult to unclip from the intake manifold. That hose cracks easily too.

I have an E46 running a little rough 12mpg and low idle in drive replaced a lot already (plugs/coils/plug wire harness, fuel filter) so now Im thinking possible vac line, O2 sensor or fuel pump issue is going on. What codes did yours throw? I’m chasing a problem with mine. I replaced my fuel injectors and then after that, P1083, P0185, P0173, P0171 was thrown. There was a lot of carbon on the tips of the injectors and am wondering if it clogged this.

How do you know its clean ? shouldn't it be air free ,I tried blowing through it seems cloged still i put 2 cans brake fluid and carb cleaner let it soak ,if no carbon, should pas air easy right? Do you think i should just by new one?

I think its called a electric or vacuum control valve, if im not mistaken.

So your diagram provided minute marker 3:27 does not show the black/white orientation of item#6. Item#7 which looks like the dry rotted piece you replaced as shown on minute marker 3:36 only shows the bad part as related to item#9 --can you say what direction the black/white check valved is oriented going toward the short version of #7 as it connects to the intake manifold? Also it would have been helpful if you could show an after repair complete picture or video. Just saying. My M52tu is a mess.

I replaced mine it was stopping my emission monitors from being ready. Problem is it's time for a emission again and the same issue has occurred in time ? Could it be from carbon build up

hey man i have question, that vacuum line that you replaced mine is completely ripped and thats why its throwing codes i want to know which is the exact vacuum line size and length because im finding them but the ones i see are short, and they say they go from the valve to the area you're speaking of but im trying to figure out how such a short line is going to reach that far. if you can help me and point me in the right direction that would be great thanks again!

okay so the diagram you posted at 3:30 ... basically i need part (7)-the hose that connects parts (6) and (5) to be clear: i only need part 7 from the diagram. my question is how long should this hose be and where can i find this specific part? i found part number 11657803732 but its the same vacuum hose that you replaced in this video, and i am confused bc i dont think that it needs to be the same length. does it matter? do i just buy one and cut it to size? are there "universal" hoses that i can purchase from the store? i just fixed the vacuum line that you just fixed and ended up breaking (7) thats connected to the one-way valve one bc it was too brittle and worn. i am now getting codes P0491 and P0492 and ive been thrown into limp mode smh. hopefully this fixes my problem.

Good procedure for removal, but I think somebody should mention: The secondary air pump and valve are part of the emissions system. They add air to the exhaust when necessary (cold start I have read) to make sure the catalytic converter can do its job. They cannot possibly cause rough idling. Also, on my E46 it wasn't 2 bolts; it was one bolt on the back side and a nut+stud on the front side. Everything is 10mm, which is convenient, even the windshield washer reservoir.

Its the vacuum line at the back of the manifold that cracks so intake manifold has undetermined air entering into manifold to cause misfire

I know this is 2 years old lol. But pretty much without the vacuum control switch. The egr would be open all the time because the vacum to the nipple would be present always. But because there is a vacuum switch it controls when to give egr nipple vacuum. Therefore controlling when the egr opens and closes.

It could be the valve, the air pump, or the vacuum line. I'd recommend replacing the valve, connector hose, and vacuum line first since the pump is much more expensive. If that doesn't work, then I'd try the pump

@@DriveMiami Use about a teaspoon of sugar, a little water, and then wash your hands as normal. If it's a stubborn mix of grease and grime, you can also throw in some liquid dish soap. It works great, and it's a lot easier to keep around than a harsh degreaser and less gunky than cooking spray.👍👍👍
