BMW 328i Secondary Air Injection System Testing P0491/P0492

In this video I will do complete test of secondary air injection system on BMWi 328i.

I had p0491 on my n51 e92, and code remained even though got a new air pump, new check valve, and new hose. Found out there was moisture in my hose that was messing up the flow. And triggering the code Fox was: removing both hoses connected to secondary air pump, Spraying a little isopropyl alcohol into the pump and both hoses. Let it dry. Been good since then.

Thank you for this video! Question. I’m building a 128i track car and will be deleting anything not essential to performance. Do you know if deleting the SAP will decrease performance either by messing with AFR’s via the O2 sensors or the DME somehow cutting power? Just curious if there are any negatives to deleting this other than emissions. TIA! Cheers

Mines had burn oil in the ports, I sprayed parts cleaner and ran a brush through it and now I don’t get that burning oil smell out the exhaust when the engine gets hot.

There is white smoke coming from my vents as soon as I turn my car on, I opened the hood and it is coming from that same side. Is it possible that may be the reason why? Because I have to change that part or maybe something far worst?

Do you smell burning oil. Most likely your valve cover gasket is leaking and engine oil is dripping down onto hot exhaust.

HI there... Is that the secondary air injection valve or the EGR valve? I'm looking to replace the EGR valve and multiple sites shoe that exact part as the EGR valve. I'm so confused...

@jomartacut3559 mine was faulty. I spent a lot of time and effort into cleaning it hoping to unclog it. Reinstalled multiple times and retested, nothing worked. I ended up buying a new one. Strangly the new one seemed exactly the same, but cleared my code. This was a total nightmare for me. If possible, save yourself the trouble and just buy a new one. Don't go to pick and pulls because if you do find the correct valve, I guarantee it will already have been tested and is faulty. Good luck.

Ramon, why were the oxygen sensor voltages so high? Is that like a European thing?

Hi my friend this car uses AFR or wide band air ratio sensor. You will see these type sensors more often in future. Any car manufacturer are using these sensors now. 2.00V is lambda 1. Voltage above 2V will indicate lean and voltage below 2V indicate rich condition. I know this is confusing. They are different from O2 sensors. Hope this help.

any update on this?, one of my ports are clogged as well. I am letting it sit overnight with crc carbon cleaner to see if it helps. I am at 156miles so no SULEV warranty for my N51

Paul R. I used screwdriver and wire brush. Nothing special you just need to clean build up of carbon deposits .

@@kyhomegarage3430 thank you so much for this info, I believe that my problem. Last time I took it off I saw tons of carbon build up but didn't bother to clean it. I just bought new gasket because the old one looks run down but I think carbon build up is the actual problem. BTW, I have a 2004 330xi but same principle!

my ports are clean, changed the pump, changed the hose, check valve is working as I tested it like in this video and still check engine light is on, I don't get it is there something else part of the secondary air?

@@jaxonhundertwasser3068 no I did not, I have the check engine light on, but emissions are do in 6 months, I will take it to a mechanic in a month to fix that, I'll post once I get it fixed... Did you get to the solution?

If your issue was the same as mine: P0492 (or P0491, but not both): I bought an O2 sensor safe carbon cleaner with an extra long hose + a sheet of cork gasket material. • Take off the secondary air valve. • Cut the gasket material in the shape of the secondary port and poke a small hole for the hose of the carbon cleaner. • Get the hose as deep into the secondary port as possible and blast the carbon cleaner. You’ll see the carbon accumulate along with the fluid at the entrance. • Let the cleaner evaporate and clean out the carbon. • Repeat (even turn the engine on intermittently while the secondary valve is off to ensure all the carbon flies out and to burn some of excess fluid). Bonus: carbon clean the secondary air valve in the meantime. Hope it works!
