Huge THANK YOU dude! This video saved me >$1500! I changed the thermostat and pump on my 2013 X5 this weekend using this video as a guide and everything went smoothly. This was the only video I found online that was A) super detailed and B) showed the procedure in a home garage doing the work on your back (not a lift). I ordered the kit from FCP Euro. Couple of call outs for anyone doing this in 2022: 1) the latest water pump from FCP Euro has rubber grommets and aluminum bushings in the water pump mounting holes. This is different than the OEM pump, but everything still goes together the same way. 2) When reinstalling the rad fan, the lower radiator hose causes an interference about halfway down. Have a helper hold the hose out of the way (aka my wife - thanks hon!). I took my time and followed the video step-by-step. One tip, I used a tiny bit of silicone lube on the rubber hoses when putting everything back together. There is very little leverage to push the hoses onto the thermostat. I did the project over a weekend and triple checked everything. No leaks, car runs great! The original problem was rad fan running on hyper speed sounding like a jet engine taking off. I wouldn’t say this is a beginner DIY. But, if you are handy with cars, can visualize the solution, have all the right tools (i used extensions, universal sockets, stubby flex head ratchets, E sockets, euro screwdriver bits) and confidence in your skills you can do this if you take your time, stay focused and be patient. FYI, my X5 has 117K miles - so pretty good run for the original water pump. I am so grateful to have found this video and do the repair myself - THANK YOU!

Slightly different geometry but similar techniques like fan removal, swearing etc...🙂 tip, I used silicone blaster spray to get radiator hose off tstat. It was stuck pretty good.

Great video...thank you for taking the time to document this procedure the tooling needed. My E70 3.5i x-drive was intermittently overheating and this seemed like a logical place to start as the car wasn't displaying a CEL or trouble code. One question...when bleeding the system I start the procedure and the pump runs for about 10 seconds then stops. I've tried several times with the same result. The bleed stream does run when I start the engine and there are no bubbles returning to the reservoir. I'm not sure that the system is properly bled and don't want to take a chance of overheating...looking forward to your future videos!!
@Zeiten
@Zeiten 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your feedback, regarding bleeding it’s ok for the pump to do that, it will turn on and off during the bleeding procedure, but it’s totally fine to start the engine and let it idle with cap off and heater on for about same time

How did you end up finishing the bleeding process? I had similar issue you described here. I started bleeding procedure and the car turns off after bleeding 10 seconds. Seems like not a bleeding related issue, but rather a car on/off issue. Thanks!

And I didn't know where the plug was or how to get all the antifreeze liquid out, but I watched your video and it clarified it so I could do it more clearly and safely! Can you tell me if by disconnecting the first tube you disconnect almost all of the liquid comes out? Or do I have to disconnect another tube? A greeting and thanks for sharing . jose carlos

Hey, thank you so much for making this video. I would have been without a vehicle for who knows how long if you didn't make this walkthrough. So thank you very much! I am curious if you have ever seen this issue before, and if so, what I should do about it. Once I finished the job, I initiated the coolant process like you showed on your video, but my vehicles battery ended up dying while it was burping the lines. I can't remove the keys out of the ignition, and I've had it on a 12v trickle down charger for 12 hours and it still has not changed the state of the car. Do you have suggestions for what I should do in this situation? Hoping I just need a new battery. Anyways thanks for the tutorial!

Fold back seats that should do it, if they are not foldable then connect jump starter under the hood that should power up the car then you can just open the trunk, there might be a trunk release handle inside the the trunk might be accessible through the back but will take some gymnastics😁

Excellent vid and I have watched a number of them from start to finish. My 2017 M2 (138,000km's/ 85,000 miles) has just told me she might be about to crap her water pump (either it is that and/or the battery) so I don't want to take any chances and will be replacing both WP and Tstat as you have but I wanted to ask if it's the same procedure on an F series? Also, did you get an engine temp warning at all? I got both orange and red warnings so put my car through ISTA and cleared the errors since it appeared to be related to the aircon running but it would help if you thought they were related to the battery as well. I understand a weak battery can throw a code due to weak voltage at the water pump.

Thank you, it’s not exactly the same on yours i would use this video DIY BMW E90 Water Pump Thermostat replacement 325i, 330i, 328i, 335i kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4vbpWB4lrFkmqc as a reference although it’s also not the same as your but it is closer to your n55 engine. As for water pump shutting down due to low voltage is a possibility but wouldn’t happen if the car is running and alternator is fine since it would be providing about 14v

Hi, just a quick one: you kept the hose disconnected from the tank at 50:31 for the air to escape, clear. But when you fill the water at 51:50 you see the hose connected again. When should this hose be connected, you didn’t mention that? Thanks for the vid!
@Zeiten

You can connect it anytime you want it’s not really necessary since it is a self bleeding system, that’s just an old habit of mine from previous generation cooling systems

Question following up on the Water pump/Thermostat. So history, noticed a pool of coolant under the front passenger side under the water pump/thermostat. Res completely empty. Tried to pressure test this morning @ 15 psi and it held 15 psi over 20mins no change? My question is does the thermostat need to be open to complete the test? Is the test only putting pressure up to the thermostat and not beyond? Was expecting to see pressure dope quickly giving all the coolant that came out...thoughts?

I agree there are lots of times when you can use your best judgment on torquing of bolts but those pump bolts are made of aluminum and you don't want to mess around with guessing they have a torque spec to set them and then an angle torque to make sure you don't snap them right off. Just saying.... 35yrs of experience breaking bolts off....lol

It’s ok, running pump not necessarily means it operating at full capacity but if it doesn’t there is usually a code stored in dme stating exactly that. You can run bleeding procedure and any time the only downside possible is draining the battery that’s it😉

I know this thread is a year old but if it helps someone in the future... I had this happen on a Ford Explorer, when the serpentine belt broke while it was flopping around it broke the connector going to the A/C clutch. On the BMW the wiring/connectors for both the thermostat and the water pump are in that general area and might have gotten damaged during the belt failure.

I think my pump is not working because I don't see any water flow in the expansion tank and the car runs hot but it's not throwing any error codes. Will a bad pump always show an error code ?

@@Zeiten I have heard of some N55’s getting rod knock. It’s probably due to poor maintenance.

@@FD-rh6tr Yes this happened on mine after owning it for 1 month. Lemon Law got the dealer to buy it back. I attribute it to poor maintenance and infrequent oil changes, but have heard other opinions that it is a rod bearing problem from the factory. Too bad, that engine was crazy fast but too many ridiculous issues

Hi tim, I recently bought a used BMW 4.4I N62 V8 from the original owner with a 120,000 miles. He says that the vehicle been sitting for 5-6 years winter/summer here in Illinois and haven’t been driven since until I bought it from him all that needs to be done he said it’s brake line and little tune-up which did hit I noticed that the temperature gauge on the dash went all the way to red as if it was overheating but the vehicle is not running just the power by switching the ignition in the second position as if I’m going to start the engine but do you think could possibly be can it be from thermostat or water pump from sitting for six years?
@Zeiten
@Zeiten Жыл бұрын
It’s electrical glitch usually happens with almost dead batteries, once it is up and running everything typically stabilizes and returns to normal operation

@@Zeiten 😮‍💨 mannn that’s really good news because I was thinking it was a blown head gasket and hoping it’s not I even went and replaced the thermostat and I’m in the process of replacing the water pump too since I was reading a article that it’s most common for this particular vehicle after driven a 100,000 miles but what you said you don’t know how much of a relief to here that and thank you so much for responding

@@Zeiten one more question last wkend I wanted to replace the rear passenger and driver side rotors and from your videos I watch so many time how you replace brakes and rotors on different motors and I haven’t seen where you have a issue taken off the rotors from both sides in the back but mine is really stuck on that I cannot pull them off that it seems something is holding on to them what can you think might be the reason why unless the drum brakes are engaged which is not to my knowledge do you think maybe I gotta replace the drum brakes from behind the calipers so it will be easier to take the rotors off ?
@Zeiten
@Zeiten Жыл бұрын
Hit it with a heavy hammer, it’s common for rotors to get stuck like that, only 1 bolt holding it 6mm allen after that wd-40 and hammer
@wiltongordon9485
@wiltongordon9485 Жыл бұрын
@@Zeiten trust me I did the hammering like a lumberjack and it still won’t budge I was thinking of spraying it from the back where you can adjust the drum brakes and try to do a slight adjustment and see if that would work but that will be for my wkend project I call wkend project bimmer 😊

A year ago , the mechanic replaced the electric water pump as well as the thermostat ,, exactly a year ago ,, when i got my bimmer back, had no cold air, ,had a huge argument with the mechanich but he said he didnt do anything to the AC sistem, anyways, now it shows a "coolant low" message, i added some, less than a liter,, message gone but yet there is some leaking , what could it be?? Is it too soon to the water pump to be broken? ,or thermostat not working?? A hose?? I barely use this car, im tired of spending too much money on repairs, just did the pan gasket, got charged 1600 bucks!!
