Hey we had great questions already and wanted to give some answers: 1. Wood cost at time of building (hopefully will go down): 2x4x8: x5 =$25 2x10x8: x4 = $56 2x8x8: x2 = $18 6x6x8: x2 = $54 Total Wood Cost: $153 2. I used pressure treated lumber for the table frame and non treated lumber for the table top. I thought the non treated lumber was drier and would warp less and also take the color better. Treated lumber for the frame for weather resistance.

Man, that table looks like a fine yacht!

It looks nice, but as an old woodworker I gotta say it might have a hard time due to the inability for the wood to move. This is why it cracked after two weeks. The breadboard ends and screws in every board needed slotting. I would have probably eliminated the breadboard ends for an outdoor fir project. But the build of the base was very solid!

Agreed. I was thinking the same thing. I'm a new woodworker but I saw a lot of videos on breadboard ends. I prefer a slotted table with a frame. I think it will be lighter and more stable.

Really curious about how this is going to hold up with there being no ability for the wood to move. Make sure to do an update next year!
@ThatTechTeacher4273 жыл бұрын
Ya I see where you are coming from and am honestly curious myself. I will try to make an update after it goes through a winter and how the finish holds up. Thanks for watching!

I don't know what your climate is like but the urathene only last a few years in the elements in Utah. So I would probably just give it a light sanding and apply a few coats every spring.

I'd like an update. With grain going opposite in the ends, seems like a problem.

That 2x10 with the whole pith should have been trashed or cut in 2 boards. The breadboard will be torn apart since there is no movement possible. You can't build and attach a table top like that in most region or the world.

What an amazing table !! Love the design, but for me, I'm going to spend less time with the gluing and finishing the top, and will go with a table cloth, covered by a clear plastic. It will protect the table from the elements and allow me to change the tablecloth based on the seasons. Thanks for your videos !

Thank you for sharing this great video. It actually inspired me to build a dining table quite similar to that. I notice you took off the wings to put a coat there. So did you not use glue for the wings? Is it attached to the table top by only the pocket hole screws? How are the wings attached to the legs? Thanks :-)

What was the all in build cost? (Sorry if I missed it) And I assume these boards weren't kiln dried?
@ThatTechTeacher4273 жыл бұрын
I did not include it because of the crazy wood prices right now but here is a rough estimate: 2x4x8: x5 =$25 2x10x8: x4 = $56 2x8x8: x2 = $18 6x6x8: x2 = $54 Total Wood Cost: $153 The boards were bought straight from Lowes so some were still very wet from the pressure treating process. Not 100% sure what the moisture content was. Although I did use not treated lumber on the top and it was very dry.
@brettzeigerbacher23143 жыл бұрын
@@ThatTechTeacher427 thanks, that's still very good compared with a lumber yard. With all your sealants I hope it doesn't split on you. My small project the boards themselves split, not the glue-ups. But I used Rubio Monocoat, which I think let the moisture out.
@geirleirvik14782 жыл бұрын
I would really worry about cracks and splits as the wood dries and shrinks. I built a table about the same size 5 years ago and the shrinkage at the breadboard end was about 3 full inches in width, it worked ok since I made tenons on the table top where I attached the breadboard mortises over with dowels across fixed in the middle floating in oval holes on the side tenons. 2 years out I had to adjust the breadboard ends by cutting it with the track saw 1 1/2 inch on each side on both ends. As such if the moisture level changes much I believe your table will end up breaking apart.
