In the past I've shown a few trailer upgrades on my channel. This time is no different. My main goal is to show you that upgrades like this can be done by anyone at home in their driveway. If a tall dorky guy who wears sunglasses inside can do it, so can you! This upgrade for me, came out of necessity. My safety chains were looking ragged, and getting rusty from constantly hitting the ground because I tow with a car. Cutting the chains in my case wasn't an option since they were cruddy, and I would have had to shorten them so much, the trailer would be too close to the car if the trailer ever became detached while driving. Twisting the chains didn't keep them from hitting the ground either. The cables not only offer a little more strength, but they're more esthetically pleasing, and tuck up nicely so they don't touch the ground. Triple win! I hope this inspires and helps some of you whose trailer needs a little TLC.

Just for future reference, when your chains are dragging, you unhook, the twist your chains, this shortens the chains and still give you the integrity of the chains. Also you will still have room for turns and maneuvers. The cables are a good idea, and will be a little stronger. But there was nothing wrong with the chains you had. The cables are nicer though.

Thanks for the tip. Been towing since I got my license. Definitely tried the twisting chain trick, but it didn't shorten them anywhere near enough to keep them from dragging.

Just twist the chains until they bind up a little bit and they wont touch the ground.

Is that a drop in gooseneck ball that you’re using or is commercially available

It's a standard trailer ball with a 2" rise. Curt MFG sells them. I needed it to level the trailer when it's hooked up to the car since they don't make a ball mount that goes any higher for this vehicle.

@@FloBass gotcha. Those little receivers are lacking in the aftermarket compared to 2” 2.5” and now 3” receiver tubes

Why do trailers have cross chains? SO WILL YOUR LONG CABELS DO THIS I DONT THINK When attaching chains to a vehicle, always cross the chains. Crossing the trailer chains aids in turning the trailer by reducing the probability of stress. It also acts as a cradle in the event of separation from the tow vehicle,

@@bmyrer5556 you're exactly right. He has it all wrong talking about how "you want the trailer to get away from your car just a little bit so it's not flying around and bashing into your bumper". What you want is the cradle you mentioned. The last thing anyone should be concerned about if their trailer became detached is what happens to their bumper. First and foremost, you don't want to lose the trailer off the vehicle completely so it's out in traffic causing accidents and more injuries or damage, hell with your bumper.
