I suggest a relay and a on off switch attached mounted in a small junction box. Relay helps with amp draw and on off switch so you can turn them off if someone is pulling out their boat or loading their boat. That way, you dont blind them.

Might suggest a in line fuse to be on the safe side. Especially since water is involved. I did the same thing to my travel trailer. Definitely a good modification.

I kept the backup light circuit separate from my highway lights. I made a duplicate harness and when I get to the landing I unplug highway lights and plug in backup lights.

Great video. Nice boat, especially for such a young guy. I just bought a Lund Tyee Magnum. Also have a Crestliner 18 sportsman with a blind for waterfowl hunting. I have thought about doing this for about 40 years - ha! I use trailers daily for work, farming, fishing, hunting, and other fun. And as you say, frequently leaving or returning in the dark. Sometimes both. Will add the lights to 3 boat trailers and 4 equipment trailers. Keep up the good work and tight lines!

Congratulations!! Great channel. I have a dolly with the hydraulic brakes and yes you have to release the brakes to back up. Mine wasn’t wired up!! Nice install, thanks for sharing.

Thanks, ran into that issue a few time this year and this weekend, have lights on order!! Did not know about the weather tight connectors, well be adding those to my stock of other electrical items.
@MGMarineTech2 жыл бұрын
Yes sir! They are called “weather pack” great all purpose connectors. Make sure to order the correct sized kits for the wire you are going to use so you get a proper seal and terminal crimp

Came here after I made a purchase of similar lights. I wasn't sure if it's legal to put on the trailer. Why didn't the backup lights come with the boat trailers in the first place?

Are you not concerned the lights will go underwater and short out? Love your idea and installation steps were great, but submerging the lights??
@MGMarineTechАй бұрын
@@rich6872 nope not at all. The lights themselves are waterproof and so is most of the wiring. But even so, just like your factory trailer lights nothing happens if they are submerged

What do you think about using battery powered LED lights? Attach and detach and charge as needed.

Yeah that’s a simple way to do it. Would just need a way to control them

Enjoyed your Back Up Spot Lights Video. My conductor plug says RS green wire first wire on left of plug. Far right on connector Says - ground? Green hot to lights, Ground to ground on lights. Lights work ONLY WHEN BRAKES are applied. Is this normal? These lights are awesome. Bought the ones U recommended . Looking forward to your response

i suggest ditching weather pack and picking up Deutsch DT connectors. more expensive, but way better imo.
@MGMarineTech7 ай бұрын
Agreed. I use them on all my racing applications. But for the average guy weather pack is easier to come by.

Hello brother! I will be wiring a Garmin Echomap 93SV with the GLS10 Black Box and LVS32 Transducer, I will be using a Amped Outdoors 20ah Battery; will that 12/2 wire work? Or do I need to go with a 10 gauge wire?
@MGMarineTech2 жыл бұрын
You can use that wire. I would probably wire them both up with their own runs

I've been looking to do this too but am concerned that I get a pair of LED lights that are IP68 rated for submersion but really can't find anything like that for $30.00 or so. What is the rating of the ones you used?
@MGMarineTech2 жыл бұрын
The ones I used are linked in the description and are ip68 rated and I submerse them all the time. They are cheap however and my last set had some moisture get inside of one but still worked perfectly. They are cheap enough that even if you have to buy another set it’s worth it.

So those lights are waterproof ? They obviously go in the water when you back your trailer in the water to launch your boat. Those lights still work under water ? Nice video
@MGMarineTech Жыл бұрын
They are waterproof “enough” to be used in the application. Now I will say, you get what you pay for, and they are marketed as waterproof, but I have had one set that did get some water in one of them but still operates just fine. This set is going on 2 years without issues.

I usually turn off my headlights when backing down a ramp to avoid blinding other people. I can’t imagine this is appreciated by fellow boaters trying to back down and getting his night vision ruined by bright back up lights.
@MGMarineTech2 жыл бұрын
You turn your headlights off when you are at a ramp and already backed in so your headlights aren’t in other people’s mirrors as they are backing their boats in the water as well.. These light are pointed the opposite way and would only be “blinding people” that already have their boats in the water… no different than driving down the road at night…
