A commonly asked question is, "how long do epoxy floors take to install?" Anywhere between 2 to 3 days? This specific project took 3 days.
The first step in applying epoxy floor is to prepare the surface. This step is so important! Without the proper base, the epoxy can't bond correctly to it to get the best.
First, you need to make sure the surface is clean. This means getting rid of any dirt, dust, or other debris, as well as any coatings or finishes that are already there for these floors. We needed to remove the old epoxy junk that was left, which involved chipping and grinding the floors.
If your floor is very rough or uneven, you may need to use a concrete grinder to smooth it out too. You couldn't find a polisher or walk behind Grindr in vacuum like this at your local equipment rental store or paint store. We also ended up having to level out the sides of the floors, which were two inches unlevel. That's a big problem with self-leveling.
Epoxy and scrub the floor with the detergent or degreaser to get any dirt or grime that is still there. Before moving on to the next step, it is important to let the floor dry completely. Once the floor is clean and dry, any cracks or damage should be fixed. Fill any cracks or holes with concrete patching compound and smooth the surface with a trowel.
Before putting on the epoxy, the patching compound needs to be completely dry. This can take a few hours or even a day depending on the product. If the floor is damper, humid, the epoxy may not bond properly. Once the surface is prepared, it's time to mix the epoxy. We first stop by Paint Mart, our local paint store to get detailed instructions on the exact amount of product we needed per.
