DIY Fairy Garden Log House Jar
In this video tutorial I show you how I made a medium sized fairy log house using a regular mason jar, tin foil, hot glue, paper clay and acrylic paint. It’s fun to make and you can use it as a decoration, secret hiding spot, or you can even turn it into a lamp by adding some battery operated LED candle lights. I will use mine for my fairy garden along side my other jar houses.
Materials and tools: one empty jar with lid, aluminum foil, air dry paper clay (here is my video on making your own AIR DRY PAPER CLAY • ❣How To Make STRONG Ai... ), hot glue and watercolors. (A lot of you asked me if you can use polymer clay on this kind of projects. Of course you can use polymer clay but for bigger jars like the ones I used in this video you will have to use a lot of polymer clay and the whole project will become expensive. You will be able to save a lot of material using thin foil but still, I would recommend you to use air dry paper clay.) Choose a jar and clean it with hot water and soap. Think about the shape of your fairy log house. I used cardboard and tin foil for the tree bark. I glued them together using hot glue. I also made a chimney and a branch using a wire and tin foil. When I was satisfied with the basic shape of my log house I made the door and started applying clay. You can work in two layers if you don't think you can make the texture from the first layer you apply. If the clay doesn’t stick to the previous layer I recommend you to water the areas you want to work on. Also keep a water container near by to wet your hands and working utensils when they get sticky. Use water to achieve smooth and shiny surfaces. Paint the fairy house in the desired colors. You can use acrylic paint or watercolors. If you use watercolors for this step I recommend you seal them in the end with varnish or regular hair spray. I painted the lid using different shades of nail polish until it looked like some tree log rings.

Frequently Asked Questions: 1. What clay do you use? I use a paper clay. I either buy it or make my own depending on what I want to create 2. What's the difference between the bought paper clay ( amzn.to/2r5FEHY ) and the homemade paper clay (A) kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpy8eJl4r8SAirc (B) kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXbJXohslr94pas ? The homemade one is not that soft and is only good for textured surfaces like stones and tree bark. It is very cheap to make so it might worth to sand it and work it a little more than buying a paper clay. However, you can't keep it more than 5 to 7 days in the fridge. It has the best consistency when you just made it and it's fresh, so I would recommend you use it in the same day or the next and don't make more than you need 3. Can I use air dry clay? What's the difference between air dry clay and paper clay? Often times shops will sell both paper clay and ceramic clay with the same label "air dry clay". It's true, both are air hardening but there are quite a few differences: air dry clay(ceramic clay) is actually mud, natural clay, while paper clay is made with cellulose and other ingredients. Paper clay is stronger than air dry clay(ceramic clay). Air dry clay (ceramic clay) shrinks and the paper clay does not shrink. This is why paper clay is the better choice for my kind of projects. My projects usually require you to cover a jar or a plastic bottle. If the air dry clay shrinks and the bottle or jar remain the same size... you guessed it... your air dry clay will crack all around. It might be a lot cheaper but it's not what you need for these projects. 4. My clay cracks, how do you cover the cracks? You don't, you change your air dry clay to a paper clay! See why at the previous question 5. How to waterproof my paper clay creations? I recommend using a yacht varnish. Apply a few coats and make sure you cover it all around so no water touches your clay 6. What brand of paper clay do you use? I use "Das modelling material" - amzn.to/2r5FEHY 7. I did it I made a sea fairy house , but I used polymer clay. Polymer clay is way to exspensive for me to keep using on large items like this, so I will definatly be making the paper clay this weekend. My great-niece and I are working on this project now. Her Nana took her to a park where she saw a fairy house and fell in love with it. I use "Das modelling material" it's a paper clay. It can't get wet so you should coat it really well with a few layers of matte yacht varnish before place it outside

Hi Creative Mom, I love these, you are extremely talented! In your description you say you sometimes put these in your fairy garden. Can I ask, is your fairy garden outside? and if so do you weather proof these in any way? I would love to make some and put them in my children's wild garden but I live in the UK and we get more rain than anything else, I'm wondering if they'd hold together.

+Suzie Whitmore I only use them indoors but you can coat them with a few layers of matte yacht varnish. Make sure you covered them really well all around so the water doesn't get to the clay. Have fun!
