Real, dead bugs really do not miss their wings. Isn't it nice that parts of them still live on? Think of it as a transplant, someone/died so someone else could live on. Wonderful tutorial. Straight to the point and easy to follow. Really enjoyed it!

Another medium that's easy to work with & requires less materials is UV resin. you just need a cheat uv flashlight for it to cure. Also, you don't have buy transparencies, you can just use wrapping or packaging plastic.

I'm not a huge fan of the glitter + beads + picture frame corner but I still love this! I think I'd do this with just the wings, wire, liquid clay, gloss, and a hint of mica powder. But this is just *personal preference* and is also based on how I'd want to customize a fairy doll, so please don't hate on this comment.

No, I get it completely. I kinda prefer the simple look as well. Sometimes the glitter wings complement a particularly fancy fairy though. Loved your comment. Thanks.

Do you think it would be possible to make these "people-sized"?
@Certainlycaroline5 жыл бұрын
I suppose the problem with it would be the baking step, you'd need a big enough oven. You'd also need a big enough transparency of the wings, which would be difficult to come by. But theoretically, you could do it if you could overcome those obstacles. It'd sure be cool.

I honestly think it's both neat and gross to use actual cicada wings. I just think bugs are gross. Buy that's a real interesting way to recycle. And I don't understand why people are getting so uppity about it because people wear shark teeth, bug encased in amber or resin, and fossil, shells from sea creature (yes that's apart of the animal), wear and collect fossils, and display dead butterflies literally ALL THE TIME. So don't get on your high horse when it's basically a common place practice that's the norm.

Real wings don't decay? And it's okay to bake them?
@Certainlycaroline8 жыл бұрын
Hi Sara, Thanks for your awesome questions. I stored a cicada wing in my craft room for about 6 months, then I used it for a craft where I just brushed some varnish over it, and it's been about a year after adding the varnish, and it still looks great. I'm not an insect collector, and I'm not an expert on the subject by any stretch of the imagination, but I do have that little experience with that little cicada wing. That experience gave me the inspiration to make cicada fairy wings. To answer your second question; yes, you most definitely can bake them with the polymer clay... worked great, and I imagine the baking probably helps to dry them out faster. Thanks again!

+CertainlyCaroline thank you very much for the quick reply!! This makes me want to try that! I love bug catching and it shouldn't be difficult to find a dead winged insect to make a pretty polymer pixie out of ^^

Those came out beautiful but made me sad to see a dead cicada. I love those so much - especially the sound they make. I know they can't live forever though. Something interesting though is that right after watching this I went outside to feed my dogs and cats their breakfast. In the grass by a stump I spotted a wing. Then I found the two smaller wings and then the other large wing. No bug though and all the wings were scattered. Maybe a bird or snake ate the cicada? We have lots of black birds around constantly and they eat anything/everything. I saved the wings for later use. :) Sad to think a cicada was eaten though. - Heidi
@Certainlycaroline8 жыл бұрын
I love cicadas too. I love their sound; I'm listening right now to their music as I'm sculpting outside. What lovely Providence that you should walk outside after watching the wings tutorial to find cicada wings, though I do agree it's sad to think the little guy got eaten. Nature is both cruel and beautiful at the same time, somehow. I suppose if he weren't there for the black bird, the black bird would be one hungry fellow, so it is the way of things. I'm surprised how many perfect wings my kids and I find if we keep an eye out for them. They are so beautiful and mysterious. Thank you for your lovely comment. I hope a lot of people read it and walk away with a little more love for the wonders of the natural world and our place in it.
@BlackCat_28 жыл бұрын
CertainlyCaroline Thank you for the awesome reply! I know the bird probably wanted a snack. They eat the cat and dog food too. I started putting my dog's food dish in her dog house to hopefully deter the birds. The black birds don't find it but the little brown wren's hop into her doghouse and steal little pieces of food. I love all things in nature and go hiking quite often. I also bring a small trash bag to collect garbage other people leave in the beautiful forest paths I take. I have also been outside lately listening to the cicadas and it is wonderful to fall asleep to at night. :) I think I have a photo of one on my instagram - NettyPreat - and if not I will have to fix that. I have taken some great photos of them lately.

CertainlyCaroline Thank you :) I am working on more fish and going to at least do one with tadpoles. I also have a couple water dragons in progress. I had the idea last night of doing some creepy Halloween ones in jars of slightly tinted resin to be like specimen jars. I am going to reuse some glass food jars from mustard etc. I put the cicada up just now. I can't believe I didn't do it sooner since they are one of my favorite things. That was a really good shot. I love the zoom on my camera. :D

I have a whole box of cicadia wings. Now I can use them. But I never backed clay etc. I am a newbie.
@JanineMKartist5 жыл бұрын
what kind of plastic did you use to print the wings on that would be safe to put in the oven with the polymer clay?
@Certainlycaroline5 жыл бұрын
Hi Janine, I use transparency sheets with the wings preprinted on them. I buy mine from a ooak dollmaking supplier but I think just about any transparency sheet would work since the oven just doesn't get hot enough for it to be a problem (though a very thin transparency might be problematic). I'd suggest testing first if you're trying out a new transparency sheet, and just keep an eye on it while testing.
@sherriegreen73744 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the acetate sheets I used melted horribly. sadface
@_syzygy_7 жыл бұрын
They are lovely! But i have a question, if i print transparent wings, i would imagine they're printed in acetate, even with the liquid clay all over it, wouldn't it melt when in the oven?
@Certainlycaroline7 жыл бұрын
Hi Norangel, great question. I am always pleasantly surprised how many things I can put in the oven with my clay and it works out. This is one of those things... no, it hasn't melted for me yet. Perhaps keep a close eye on your project in the oven at first, but I've never experienced that problem so I do think it'll work well for you.

Has anyone ever had experience with real butterfly wings doing this? It sounds macabre, but I have a swallowtail that had to live in my house a couple years back because he decided to come out of his cacoon a full three months early in full winter. I fed him and things but he still died. I'd like to remember him as jewelry.
@Certainlycaroline8 жыл бұрын
Hi Elise, How kind of you to care for the little guy when he couldn't care for himself. I didn't happen to find butterfly wings, so I couldn't try them out, but like you, I did wonder about it. I do know people will put a butterfly wing in a cabochon and cover it in resin. If you find a dead moth or something you might want to try out the liquid polymer clay method (from the video) on those wings, since butterfly wings would have similar results. Hope I'm making sense. :)
