Hey folks. Ive since made a vintage inspired print of my butterfly display which is available as a digital download or print. You can make your own by printing and cutting them out at home and following the tutorial or just frame the print whatever you prefer. Thanks for the support x Butterfly Print Digital Download - shorturl.at/azLNT Butterfly Print - shorturl.at/nFS37

Nicely done. I worked in the sciences years ago, and worked on insect collections. Real insect study collections are exceptionally fragile and hard to keep in home conditions. This is so much nicer and will hold together a long time. I would have suggested you do two things: 1. Use fine point scissors to clip your final cuts so you can maintain shapes, and 2. Use a black marker or paint to paint the edges so the paper doesn’t show.

This is one of the most delightful videos I've ever seen. I also love the movie The Collector. Creepy. The book is also fantastic.

Thank you! This is great. I was searching for faux taxidermy butterflies (for the same reasons you stated in this video), but for some reason, I could only find real ones... Until I came across this video! So, this is exactly what I needed

Omg this is so underrated??? What? I was thinking about making something like this as a gift for my bestfriend. (But i didn't really wanna waste money on buying one, and killing a butterfly lol) I couldn't find one person making a video on the diy oness!!! Thankyou so much!!♥️

Your very welcome. You could also just print a picture of a taxidermied butterfly n do the same technique for a super quick option.

Nice Video. I make my Butterflies out of Aluminum, paint it and put the antennas. The body I make it in a 3D printer or carve it in wood so the whole thing looks real.

Hi! I think I'm going to do this for my next art project! Thanks so much for creating a vegan version of taxidermy :) Question - what thickness/type of paper do you use to paint the butterflies on?
@TasminBassettArt Жыл бұрын
I just used regular watercolour paper, preferably 500gsm.whatever paper is suited to your paints. Good luck.

I have wanted to have a butterfly collection for most of my adult life, and being artistic I've also made a few collections of paper butterflies through the years. sharing the same conflicts expressed in this video with having a "Wall of Death" and the ethical or trustworthiness of acquiring real specimens. my conflict certainly kept me from getting real butterflies for a long time. till last month when a friend gifted me a framed blue morpho, that's when I spiraled into the dark side and revived my desire to have a real collection. in the past few weeks, I've sought out a few websites bought a few dozen real butterflies, and framed myself. and although still conflicted and slightly disturbed about the morbid process that is to rehydrate and pose these butterflies. I will have to admit that a part of me justifies it for the following reasons. 1 my reason for wanting my own collection. I've always loved natural science and the evolution/ life cycle of butterflies has intrigued me since a young age. Being able to Common name from memory dozens of species and fun facts about the butterfly. I genuinely love butterflies and want to preserve not just the specimen but the species and knowledge of them is the first step. so when I get a new butterfly I make a scientific entry in my journal from life cycles country and region of origin, food, hosting plants, etc. 2 These butterflies are not just a Decoration to me. I can justify the purchase of one of these butterflies for myself. as opposed to acquiring dozens or perhaps hundreds of them to make into "art" and resell as decorations, jewelry, or any other form. yes, I am a part of the consumption machine right now but after 1 or two for the species, I don't see myself going back and buying more. I refuse to perpetually be a consumer for my own monetary gain. and that's something that as an artist I can stand behind on. 3 By knowing the conflict and understanding the controversy of acquiring real specimens I attempt to at the very least make as educated purchasing choices as possible. and not just casually hitting add to cart from any place that sells butterflies. Along with being able to inform and hopefully guide anyone else who may be looking into buying some for themselves. 4 Lastly by doing the rehydrating, pinning, drying, and framing process myself. It allows me to have a much closer interaction with the insect being able to appreciate it up close and in a personal way that makes me value it far beyond some "pretty thing for my wall". Even now the blue morpho that I got gifted can be considered the most beautiful butterfly in my collection yet it's the ones I framed myself that I appreciate the most. If you aren't willing to learn about the species or handle these critters to frame yourself then you might also need to ask yourself why is it that you want them in the first place. Even though these butterflies are dead when I get them handling their bodies requires patience, tenderness, and knowledge and yes sometimes emotional constitution to rehydrate. and that makes me way more self-conscious of what it is that I'm handling and for what purpose. This was a living creature and should absolutely be treated with respect and appreciation and not just end up as a fun little knickknack or just another decoration.
