DIY: Fitting a Carpet Part 1 - The Underlay

Join me as I fit a new bedroom carpet.
Please note that I am not a professional carpet fitter.

Good effort on your DIY underlay fitting & preparation. I am a certified Master Carpet Fitter of 34 years and I would just like to give you a few helpful pointers if I may? 1. It is important to have fitted that little bit of gripper under the radiator for two reasons. Firstly, so the carpet can retain its tension properly and secondly for it to be finished off the same as the rest of the room. Cut the gripper in 6 inch pieces and use a hot melt glue gun to quickly glue them in place. 2. You fitted the underlay upside down. 3. When fitting PU underlay you don't quite fit net to the gripper, as this underlay expands and will rise over and onto the gripper once the carpet is in place. The result is, you won't be able to get a flat smooth finish on the gripper. Cut slightly back if you can. 4. No need to put so many staples down. Secure the underlay in the corner's and along the joins. Putting so many staples in may attract filtration marking on the carpet. 5. On a wooden floor it is important to tape up and seal your underlay joins to prevent filtration marks on your new carpet in the future. This is when dust is blown up through the cracks of the floor boards, through the underlay joins which makes a black 'tram' like marks on your carpet, particularly if it's a light colour. This is more common around the perimeter of the room. A great effort otherwise and I look forward to watching part 2. I hope my comments are seen as being helpful to you and your watcher's. Interesting vid. Thanks. I had the same problem with radiator preventing me nailing down gripper. I swapped the nails for short screws. Trouble is then you have the problem of gettin hand and screwdriver under the rad to apply enough pressure to screw them in. Fortunately I happen to have a Makita angle drill, so was able to fit a cross head bit and screw them down tight.

I’ve just ripped out my old hallway and stair carpet and as money is beyond tight I’ve used foam puzzle squares as a replacement, but I still feel that I need underlay as it gets ever so cold near my front door. Yes, it will be fine but there will be more compression on the underlay, i.e. where the staple has secure it, there will be a larger depression. I'd use it without hesitation. Des

Well I've been fitting carpets for 40years and that's the first time I've seen an empty room. Obviously we have to move the chest of drawers the triple mirror wardrobes full of clothes and the double bed, sometimes a massive 4postet bed an of course the 50 gallon fish tank and pianos and snooker tables and then replace and level everything oh and then cut the bottom of 5 or 6 doors off because the carpets too thick and all this for 30 quid. Believe me, you dont wanna be a carpet fitter!!!

We are getting a new carpet for a spare bedroom, we empty the rooms ourselves but is it unreasonable to leave the old carpet down? I have tried to pull it up, even trying to cut a hole in it go get some grip but its down firm

​@@louisetansley Hi there. Are you fitting the carpet or is someone else doing that for you? If you're doing it yourself you could leave the old one down I suppose and use it as underlay providing it doesn't smell and/or isn't rotted, etc,. However, if you're getting someone to fit a new carpet for you then you can expect them to charge you for their time for removing the old carpet and this would not be unreasonable. They may also charge you for disposing of it. Bottom line, if someone else is fitting the new carpet for you it's best to try and get the old one up yourself to save time and extra money. I'd also tell the carpet fitter that the old one needs taking up as he/she will probably be running to a very tight schedule and may not have accounted for the additional work on that day. Hi, If I have a gaps between my floor boards, would you fill them in? I have about 5mm gaps between the floor boards. I can't see them being filled before. Old underlay was a black rubber type and there are a lot of dust gathered in these gaps.

Good question and really easy to answer. Vacuum floor thoroughly paying attention to the dust and grime in the gaps. Use a cartridge and gun to run a bead of exterior frame sealant along all gaps. Then smooth over with a wet spatula / blade for a nice finish (just use an old container with water and a little washing up liquid). Done it loads of times and works a treat. I always use the brown colour. Best wishes, Des

Hi there. Depends on type of underlay. There should be a rough side and a smooth side. Rough side on the floor, smooth side facing upwards my friend. I've also copied and pasted the following excerpt from United Carpets website: '15. WHICH WAY UP DOES CARPET UNDERLAY GO? If your underlay has a sticky or shiny surface, that should be in contact with the floor. If there is no shiny surface, one side usually has more of an even surface which is made from a thin backing material. This should be face up, so it’s in contact with the carpet. Hence, the spongy material that makes up most of the underlay should be face down, in contact with the floor. All underlay from United Carpets and Beds features a United Carpets and Beds logo on the side that should be face up.' Hope that helps. If still unsure, ask the retailer you bought it from. Most commonly used in UK is the rubber style underlay.. the rippled rubber side of the underlay touches the floor... 😉

Moved to Germany, you will not believe it here lol. I bought my carpets and then headed out to look for underlay, they have never heard of it and said how silly the thought was as carpets do not need underlay, I tried to explain why its better and they do but they have none of it lol.. I cant find the stuff anywhere. They dont have skirting boards either but instead run the carpet up the wall to about the height our skirting boards in uk are and then stick the carpet to a plastic skirting board type thing that then holds the carpet. Got that done although not happy with no underlay and hate no skirtings, anyway proceeded with painting last week and guess what, never heard of undercoat, asked me what the point in it is and this is at major diy stores lol. I have been here a couple of years now but still am astonished daily at things lol I live in hope of finding underlay here so I dont need to pay horrific postages from far away but im not going to hold my breath!

Nice work, would be interesting to see the different views on what side the underlay goes. Also when prepping a room I like to install some 3mm hardboard down just to even out any bumps etc. with hard board the rough side always goes on the top side.for me personally even though I will do the odd bit of carpet fitting in small areas for a house finish I will get the pros in, they can do it very quickly and pretty cheap. I think I paid £30 for a room, they did it in 20 minutes. I did however prep the room with underlay and gripper though. It's really not worth my time. It's the only thing I will pay someone to do. i get my satisfaction in completing a rebuild from the bottom up take my hand to most things including mechanics. Been like that ever since I can remember. being in the trade though I notice you don't really get many that actually take pride in their job. They are not in it for the passion but because it pays the bills.

+Zed Man Thanks ZM, hope all is well with you. I've had some great feedback on this video. Apparently I laid the underlay the wrong way up which was interesting because no-one mentioned it in the previous video I made in the lounge. I would also do the same with hardboard or ply if the floor was v. rough. As you say, you've got to weigh up whether it is cost effective to do it yourself or get someone in. Sometimes it does pay to get someone else to do a job depending on your own circumstances and earnings potential. Having good old fashioned pride in your work does seem to be becoming a thing of the past for sure. Have a good day my friend.

+21centurycaveman Hi again, I thought I would pop by and let you know the reason(s) why the underlay is clearly laid upside down. When PU underlay is manufactured they put a flat finished surface on one side and leave the other natural (the rough side). In carpet fitting it's always rough side down, smooth side up. One of the reasons that the smooth 'finished' side is up is that when the carpet is fitted and you are walking on it, the backing (usually hessian/action/secondary) still moves about a little and because it's finished side up this will not 'grate' against the underlay. If the underlay is fitted rough side up this constant 'grating' movement may cause the underlay to prematurely delaminate. Another simple reason, it is easier to cut on the smooth finished side. Not quite sure why all these supposed pro's think that you installed the carpet underlay upside-down. The top Smooth Finish is a 'breathable barrier' and NEEDS to be installed closest to the carpet. This aids in keeping spills and moisture out of the bulk of the underlay and instead leaves it in the carpet so that cleaning is much easier, thus keeping stains closer to the carpet surface. Keeping the moisture barrier toward the carpet ALSO helps keep the rug cleaning machine water out of the underlay and instead between the bottom of the rug and the stain where it should be... The shiny side also aids in sliding the carpet around when installing without pulling and kicking up the underlay. If any PRO doesn't know that, then they shouldn't be giving you advice and they probably should be worried about warranty issues down the road..LOL. Regards and good job :)

As a carpet fitter I applaud you're effort👍. to be helpful for the future, had you put your hammer on its side and made sure the nails weren't through the gripper yet then you'd have been able to hit it in under the radiator, if it was still to close use then end of the fitting feather I presume you use in part two on the end of a nail and hit it down with a mallet or hammer :) well done otherwise. I could poke out holes all over the video where you've done things wrong but honestly so long as the carpet is still treating you fine and your happy with the result who gives a crap. good on ya mate. Also you're comment about jealousy was more amusing than anything because its probably painters that care most lol. p.s get some feckin scissors man, lol. you are just making life difficult for yourself ✌👍

21st Century Caveman actually I have mastered the trade, I have been doing this trade since I was 7, I work with my dad and I enjoy it a lot. You would be surprised with what I can really do but I don’t want to make you jealous,,, because I am Much BETTER than you!!!
