Big fan off the channel Brent but as a landscaper I wouldn’t recommend this install for natural stone slabs especially ones that are not calibrated as I’m sure you found out getting them level is some job in a screeded bed of paving sand that method works great for block paving. If you ever did this again laying on a semi dry concrete mix would be the way to go laying one slab at a time that way you set the depth of the concrete to suit each slab and if you joint it with a slurry grout when you come to power wash it no dirt and sand washes out. Just my 2cents as a viewer keep the content coming as really enjoy it 👍 all the best from 🇮🇪

Great input Sean and I completely understand the type of installation process. I actually spoke to the client on this project and discussed both options. They wanted to go with the sand option over a concrete one but in the future I want to show off the concrete base install. Thanks so much for watching and the support to.

@@BYOTools I would love to see a concrete version! Love natural stone but the sand wouldn’t do it for me. Come to Ohio and you can install mine 😉

Hmmm this sounds like an interesting method. Do you do base material under the concrete mix? I’m afraid that jointing with grout when it’s not on a full slab would result in a lot of cracked joints. Any thoughts?

@@tylerk.7947 Hi Tyler if you want to learn more subscribe to channel as I’ve started recording our work and I’ve a detailed video coming up explaining the method mentioned above. And to your question about the base yes every patio is built up with a stone mix 28mm to dust not sure what that’s equivalent to in the USA laying on concrete semi dry mix we use a full bed also 👍

The beauty of video editing Mitch ha ha. It took a bit to get it round as well as finding the right stone for each placement but it worked out I must say.

Beautiful! Will you be using some kind of metal stand alone fire pit or adding some sort of brick or other material type pit? Please show pics of the area in use. Thx!

That is very instructive and entertaining pal! Oh, just a little remark here though. I’m not sure where you are located, but in northern climates, it’s way more recommended to add a geotextile fabric between your non-organic soil and the substrate 3/4 rocks. The common and most obvious benefit of all geotextile use is soil separation. By separating soil layers, the fabrics prevent them from mixing.

wouldn't it be easier to put the edging down before the gravel? You could also keep using the level as a scree for the sand instead of a trowel by changing the angle.

Aloha, Brent. The climate I live in here in the tropics necessitates frequent pressure washing of paths, patios, etc. How could I do a project like this that is more pressure washer-proof? (So that the sand between the stones doesn’t get blasted away?) Mortar?

I am starting to learn about patios so I can start doing the installation bc it’s hard to rely on subs when they won’t show up. We have good ol fashioned red clay here and it’s very difficult to warranty patios bc the prep is so expensive most people don’t want to pay for it. I’m up for the challenge and I can’t wait to start doing backyard Reno’s

Hi Brent is there a reason why you didn't use a sand activator, like won't the stone start moving around in the future?
@BYOTools
@BYOTools 2 жыл бұрын
If they were smaller cracks I would’ve used that type of sand but because they’re larger and there’s a ring around the unit I feel there’s not going to be much movement over time. We’ll see how it does and I’ll keep everyone posted. Thanks for watching.

Would it make an even greater and better foundation if you molded a thin layer of concrete that makes a nice and flat surface under the fine ground gravel? And then add the fine top layer of gravel, say 1-2" before adding the flagstones? I might consider doing that if it will work.

Great video, Brent. This video led to the the "Outdoor Remodeling Projects" playlist, which looks like many other fantastic videos. However, I wondering why the 2nd to last video on this playlist, right about this video, was the video "The reason Japan attacked Pearl Harbor" from the KZbin channel "Imperial War Museum". What's up with that? Were you hacked?

Ehh, lot of good prep work for a very DIY not appealing result... stones look loose... u even see one tilt as u walk across it... tons of leveling to then put random thickness stones atop... along with the loose sand in between... Very large gaps between rocks the sand will wash out overtime... No geotextile or weed barrier as well... Rough one for sure...

Horrible. Flagstone too lose, the grout in the middle will wash away in a few months from rain. Too large of gaps, and bad fitting. Seems like you got tired and exhausted towards the end and corners were cut.
