Agreed. Geezers like me don't use the ladder stored in the garage even for work in the garage. In fact we don't use ladders at all....we keepo falling off. But were I a younger man, I'd commission a DAVE Ladder. Well done Dave

You made a good sturdy ladder; another best thing about it, it’s a friendly user. It’s light weight and you are happy to get it out!

Thank you very much for your comment as the previous comment did sting as I was not even 60 when I made the video. Old age does sneak up on you, but I believe that was the first time I was ever called old and need to get use to it. I didn't rebuke Surya as his day will eventually come and he will understand for himself.

Really great but think I would replace the side pieces to steel in case it snapped.by side bits I mean the pieces you lower which locks the two sides into place.but do really like them kindest regards tim
@DYI2 жыл бұрын
Yes, most commercial ladders do have steel. However, there is very little stress on the side pieces and there are two so there is redundancy.

The 2 boards in the front that the steps fit into our 2x3 studs with as few knots as I could find. I live in the USA so the true measurement is 1.5 x 2.5. The other boards are just 1x3 which actually measure 0.75 x 2.5. Of course, knot-free hardwood would be the best. Using a router and glue also makes it much stronger. I have been using it for 3 years now with no issues.

If I tried to talk in Spanish, you would not understand me at all as I am horrible in languages. I took Spanish in school and it was very difficult for me.

What kind of wood did you use? Good presentation!

Thanks. I mostly just shoot my own videos, but the 2 that are most popular by far including this one were taken by my son. I just used standard Douglas Fir 2x3s and pine that was hand selected for few knots and good grain pattern. Of course, knot free hardwood would be strongest, but also heavier and much more expensive.

Can you make a video how you made that ladder or could you post the drawings. I would like to build the same ladder.
@DYI5 жыл бұрын
Aleg, It would be much too long of a video for me to show all the details and I never draw out plans as I prefer to just work things out in my head and start building. I would recommend starting by building the step side first. The steps need to be at an angle of about 15 degrees and the legs are at angled inward at about 5 degrees. I just followed the angles in a commercial ladder. Of course, you could make it even more stable if you used larger angles. I did the steps at the top and bottom first and cut the others to fit. The steps should be spaced less than 12 inches apart. It is very important for safety that the steps are evenly spaced. If you have long legs you could try more than 12 inches, but I typically am carrying heavy boxes up in my attic and like the shorter steps. The steps are made out of knot free 1x3's and the rails are 2x3's. The groves in the rails are cut with a router, but you could also make many passes with a circular saw with the blade set at a depth of 1/2 inch. I used wood glue and 3 inch screws with the holes pre-drilled. I added the back legs next and cut them so that the angles were correct and the steps were flat. Post a video if you make improvements!

Your ladder looks really good, functional and it seems lightweight considering it is made of wood. What type of wood did you use?
@DYI4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. My version weighs 18 pounds. I used mostly Douglas Fir and pine which is pretty strong for its weight and relatively low cost where I live. At least one person built it out of hardwood. Here is a good chart comparing wood properties that has plenty of information except for cost: workshopcompanion.com/KnowHow/Design/Nature_of_Wood/3_Wood_Strength/3_Wood_Strength.htm. It is very important to use knot free boards for the steps.

so what is the lengths of wood etc...?
@DYI3 жыл бұрын
The main rails are 6 feet 2x3's. Bottom step is 22 inches and top step is 12 inches. Everything is flexible. The only innovation is to have the one axis and to have the front and rear legs nest. The rear legs nest on the outside of the front legs which is the only way to nest because the steps are on the front legs.

Thank you I am back again, Did you ever make a drawing for this?
