To check the timing chain, get #1 on TDC on compression stroke on 0. Turn the engine only in the direction of rotation. Mark the position of the rotor on the distributor body. Turn the engine backwards until the rotor just moves. Check the distance on the damper from 0 for degrees it moved. If the crank moved too much, the chain is worn.

There's 2 firing orders for a 302. There's a regular 302 and there's a high output 302

If the pick-up coil goes bad, replace the distributor. You'll end up messing things up trying to fix it.

Dustin Jeffries Check on the fender on the driver's side. It may be enclosed on a black box attached to the inner fender in the engine compartment. The module may be black or gray. If the timing mark flutters, it's the module.
