Pro tip on this type of primary cylinder, we leave the cylinder in the lift. Lower the carriage on to blocks, pull off the chains, remove the pulley and gland nut. If we have to pull the rod, we use the hydraulics to raise the piston to the top of the cylinder and then pull it out.

Your a brave man Barry, im am terrified of hydraulics. Especially maintenance work were parts might still be under load. You have one big angel sitting on your shoulder, that was a close call.

Thanks Jop! That was a stupid move on my part not watching the top of the cylinder when I knew it was coming down and I was pretty lucky. Pretty simple system, when turned off there is no stored energy other that gravity. When we have old equipment and or tools it it either fix it yourself of scrap it. No way I could justify a wrecker truck to haul it to a shop, shop fees, and a return haul. The machine just isn't worth it. Barry

18:00 thats when you run into this problem you can clean the groove up with brake cleaner, and pack the gtoove with bondo, make it nice and smooth put the cap on then clean the bondo out of the groove.

Joe Yea I was lucky. I saw it start to fall. Not soon enough to stop it but with enough time to get my head down and my arm up. Forklifts are so difficult to work on, if it ever sprouts a leak from it's under belly, scrap iron time!

Thanks for this video when I searched this problem on Google cuz I'm new to do in hydraulic work on forklifts this was the first video that came up so it must be very popular and this is the same exact problem that the forklift I have to work on at work has the main cylinder in the middle is leaking I've been in maintenance for a very long time doing an electrical and mechanical work for 7 plus years but I have never done hydraulic work so thank you so much I feel more confident if I have to take on this task at work now And I'm glad that that cylinder did not hit your head in that you're safe and thanks for sharing this video

Those seals and wipers go in easier if you soak them in hot water for a bit. They also make a neat tool that folds the wiper into a 'W' shape and then lets it loose to snap into its groove.

That was a baller move because you didn't know what you didn't know. I am considering doing one of my lift cylinders but you make me consider whether the $1,000 I would spend on a mechanic is worth my life or a hand.

$1000 doesn't sound too bad but keep in mind my total cost was $80 for the new seals and another $100 for 10 gallons of oil. I just went about it in a kind of a back asswards way( because I didn't know what I didn't know). Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. Barry

I went to a local hydraulics repair shop and they measured them up and ordered them for me. Pretty easy to get.
