Thank you for sharing. It is an excellent system, well thought out and planned to the last detail. I also loved the anoxic filter part which a lot of aquarists don't know about and therefore don't end up including. The entire system was very well explained. Excellent video. 👌👌👌👍

Super great idea to put the sump inlets on the side and add an internal "overflow" box inside. Thanks. Keep up the good work.

Neat video! Seems like the video was more oriented to aquarium builders. For us that are clueless on the topic: Why such an elaborate filtering setup? What would happen if one didn't have such a setup? What does each stage do? With that setup, what maintenance is required?
@jpfishnut6 жыл бұрын
Username Well the answer to that is two fold. The first is that I plan on potentially keeping fish in here that demand pristine conditions and a huge biological filter will help with that. The second is that I like maintenance to be as easy as possible so doing a ton of work in the beginning will save an enormous amount of time over years of maintaining your system. The only maintenance with this system will be rinsing our filter pad in the first stage when needed and probably squashing our the sponge every 4 months maybe. And of course every aquarium will need water changes. Stages one and two deal with ammonia and nitrite. The third chamber kind of polishes and will hopefully remove nitrate. The third chamber is a new media for me so I can’t say whether it will work or not yet. And lastly, I feel that keeping fish and filtration is equal parts caring for you animals and art at the same time

for your Fluidized Bed Section/ Filter media that is using 5 liters of K1 Micro: 1) how often do you replace your K1 Micro Media 2) what creates the swirling action?

I've been wanting to rebuild the sump on our 75g pretty much since we bought it. It was a saltwater tank and it just isn't laid out well for freshwater. This gave me some great ideas on how to fix it.

What a brilliant idea with the overflow box modification , I should have switched to sumps years ago, I keep Dovii and umbees in big tanks and each tank I have 2 giant canister filters, mainly eheim 2080 , 2260 and more recently aquamanta efx 600 as they hold a huge ton of media but all that combined doesn't compare to a sump, not just for bio media but also dilution but I never wanted the water line to be so low. We owe it to our fish to give them the best water possible. Thanks

Beautiful sump. Just wondering why not drill your tank for an effective over flow? The sump is drilled, so bulkheads aren’t a problem. Just curious… I’m not gonna lie, I love this set up. The plumbing is clean and colorful. Not sure I’ve ever seen a tank, custom or not as clean as what you’ve got here.👍🏻

Awesome set up I've been watching DIY set ups and this by far the best one I seen very educational and I'm gonna take alot of what u said into consideration. Jus one thing what was it ur talking about useing cat litter? Please send me the link cause I hate nitrates!

I run a very simular home built setup but not near as nice on 180. The chamber where you use the nitrate box I have a bunch of plants under a high powered light. That chamber has black walls and the other chamber tops are covered with black lids. This keeps any algae from growing in the other parts of my sump. I really did learned a few things from your video, good job.

I'm getting ready to build my first sump. How about a a quick update if you would change anything from this design or is it working great for ya?
@TA-op3vn4 жыл бұрын
Hi, I never dealt with sumps. I was wondering why not to connect sump like you did from the back instead of top, but all the way down the wall. By doing this way the water is being pushed up through sponge? On your set up the water is being pushed over the acrylic ramp and on to the sponge, this way it looks like the sponge is being used only on 1/3. Forgive I’m just trying to understand this terminology and difference. You drain system, is it Herbie method? And how quiet is it?

Wow! I am not a sump fan but you did a fantastic job. The attention to detail is incredible. Nicely done man. Can you post an update on how the anoxic filter has done...does it really works? I built one and started using it 2 weeks ago but I read it takes about 45 to 60 days to build up the bacteria needed to eliminate nitrates. Best of luck. Very impressive!

nice sump- question: since you designed this sump why doesn't the first chamber evenly allow water to use all of your filter floss? seems only a small brown section is being used fast while rest of pad is pure white etc. 2nd- why not use coarse, medium & fine sponge in 1st chamber than 2 nd chamber use your finer filter floss padding. gets brown a lot less
@jpfishnut4 жыл бұрын
It’s angled down a touch, as it gets dirty the water flows to the cleaner section until the whole thing needs to be cleaned or changed. I have polishing fiber underneath the coarse pad. Works well 👍

Also ,,,,tannings in the water clear occur yet at depths where light is more restricted and tannings have reduced the light density diatoms are likely to colonise thus adding to the colour,,,,,,!

Excellent. I plan on upgrading in the future and this is inspirational. I dont know why more freshwater tanks incorporate sumps. As you point out they can be designed to make maintenance so much easier and they also add extra water volume for stability. What are your plans for water changes on this tank? I notice two pipes on the left hand side, are they for auto water changes?
@jpfishnut5 жыл бұрын
Fishamble there are two holes drilled in the back of the tank that have flat strainers on them. One is connected to my plumbing to drain the tank. The other hose goes to my utility sink where I have a pump to refill the tank. Makes water changes pretty easy.

Hi there. I just have one small clarification. I have also seen your sketch on imgur. How does the water level in the second compartment is where it is at. The drainage is through slits at a much lower level. What makes the water not stay at the level of the slits as it flows through the third compartment.

HelpfulFrosting definitely will! I have your video bookmarked so I can somewhat copy your plumbing. I also have the eshopps eclipse overflow but the smaller version. First time plumbing so everything seems so confusing lol
@jpfishnut5 жыл бұрын
nneeeco yes it’s a little intimidating first time. I’m not sure if you will need to cut yours or not. There are a lot of calculations that would go into that to know for sure. I cut mine more on instinct from running systems like this before. I knew if I didn’t cut it the water line would show. Interested to know how you make out👍 I also found a really cool method to silence the overflow box even further that doesn’t involve risk of flooding. I’ll post another video on that soon that will be much shorter lol
