DIY - from Blonde to the Perfect Balayage - Easy to Follow At Home Tutorial

Here's my much requested DIY Perfect Balayage tutorial, where I show you step by step how to achieve seamless and perfectly blended rooted blonde balayage - Perfect Fall Hair. I show you two results, a darker more contrast balayage and a softer brighter balayage. The process is the same but the products vary so check the list below to see what products you’ll need to achieve your desired Beautiful Balayage without spending any money at the salon!

Before you start bleaching your hair - make sure your hair is nourished and in the best possible shape. Are you kidding me! I have been doing hair professionally for 11 years and this video is AWESOME! I just did it to my own hair a few minutes ago and I am now leaving my first youtube comment ever because I am amazed. The technique looks like it will not work at all and I was scared to death while it processed, but seriously WOW. It turned out perfect. I also added a shadowbox (dark underneath to the nape of the neck) and it looks great. It does not give an ombre look, It is totally sombre or balayage. My application even looked a little more sloppy than yours and it still worked perfectly. No spots or weird parts and you can totally do it in like 15 minutes. I mixed some 7A and 7N with 8N (more of the 7s) Aloxxi 10 vol. (if you want to match a dirty blonde root). Thank you sooooo much for making this video. I have been trying to find a good technique and I am very impressed.

This technique worked beautifully on my hair! I dyed my hair all over blonde; but the roots were too brassy for my liking (even after toner). I used a light brown drug store dye and absolutely LOVE the results. It was very easy to do and this video is great. Thanks so much! I just did this technique yesterday and am beyond amazed with the results!! My hair is a darker shade of blonde all over so I purchased a 6G color to match my roots (and cover the gray). I didn't quite understand how it was going to work and not just cover my entire head from the top down with dark, but I dove in and went for it. Well it turned out amazing! It now looks like my lighter blonde was highlighted in and there are no harsh lines! Plus no more gray!! I still can't quite wrap my head around how the lighter color didn't get covered completely from my ears up (my big fear...that and picking a color that might be too dark), but the angle and application technique seems to leave the under sides (which are actually the top layers) uncolored and it ends up blending so nicely. This was my first time ever coloring at home and although I was in a bit of a panic, the results are fantastic! I can't believe how much time and money I saved and got exactly what I wanted! How many times I've been to the salon and shown them what I want, with my main focus being those pesky, unruly grays along my ears, only to leave with highlights and still crazy grays? Never again! Thanks so much for posting this video!! :)

WOW, WOW, WOW!!! Thank you SO much... your technique just took my hair from a cheap one-dimensional bottle blonde to multi-dimensional color I look like I paid hundreds for! I had a moment there where I was sure it was all going to go sideways... but, AMAZING result! I started at 9AV with 1/2 inch new growth and natural level 7 base. I used 7N for this. For all those asking about side parts - YES, you can part down the middle for application and it'll still work out perfectly. Looks great with straight hair, too. And because this was my first time application, I did the hairline all around my head and applied color all the way to my nape in the same progressively lower sweeping technique. I also used a feather brush I picked up from Sally's for better blending results vs hard bristles you would normally use for root touch ups. I know others mentioned this, too - I would LOVE to see an easy technique like this for adding in DIY highlights!

You have saved my hair at least 6 times now! I went to the same salon for years and have extremely thick hair(girls in high school actually made me feel terrible about it calling it awkwardly thick which at the time I didn't understand was jealousy) Anyways, I've never really had to deal with breakage because there's always more where that came from but the last time I went to the salon I've been going to for years to get a bit of a balayage to break up my very light blonde hair the stylist broke off a ton of my hair, charged me double for"having too much hair" and failed to let me in on all the breakage, rushing me out in a hurry. I can't thank you enough for this simple, yet thorough tutorial! I have been dying, bleaching and highlighting my own hair for almost 25yrs and this is by far the greatest technique!!! I love the ombré look, but was baffled how to do so to my blonde-colored hair with my dark brown roots. A friend suggested I try balayage and I found your tutorial (so glad)! The best thing I ever did to my hair. I spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars at the Solon. Took a 4 dolor box of dark brown from the store and finally got what I wanted using this technique. Wish I could post a before and after. Just go for it ....... I spent 2 months looking at this U tube vid afraid I couldn't do it correctly. This is truly the best my hair has ever looked > THANKS SO MUCH ! I will try to dig up a dig up a before pic but I hated my hair. First I bleached it totally out blond. Back and forth to sally's beauty supply . They felt so sorry for me it was sick. I took this vid to a salon and asked for it to be done and I still got a foil that didn't give me this look. I have dark eyes and brows and dark roots and now it looks totally sun kissed with natural dark coming down. Just have a beer, " had too" all the money and time I spent getting that blond and putting that dark over it ...... relax ! and just do it .... Glad I did ! you are a S*T*A*R. i live in Saudi Arabia and have spent $1000 this year to get highlights and lowlights and the results have been awful from 4 different salons. So, I do not often post comments, but I felt like I had to for this video. I've used this technique on two separate occasions, and honestly after both times I had a mini meltdown where I thought that I'd seriously effed up my hair, and both times it came out PERFECT! When you're looking at after you've initially done it, it kind of looks like a mess and you have this OMG moment, but as long as you basically follow the essence of the technique, for me at least, it turns out perfect. The dark top always Blends in perfectly to my blond, and just looks amazing. This is by far the easiest technique I've seen and the best video I've seen for it. I've used this technique using both Salon color with developer, and just like a normal box dye, and both times it came out perfect. I love Elle bangs and watch her videos all the time!

I'm going to be 67 in a couple more weeks. I really wanted more color to my blonde hair and found your tutorial super simple to follow and do. My hair turned out wonderful!! I used dark ash blonde for my undertone and it blended in perfectly. I just updated my google photo so it will probably take a day to show up. Once you see me not wearing brown and wearing a pink top, that is the new pic! THANK YOU @Ellebangs . This tutorial will be repeated in 6 weeks to touch-up my graying/white color that will make it's appearance. Best part? @@iheartyouunstoppable I used Wella Color Charm in 7N and then used Wella bleach to paint some lighter pieces at the ends. 7N gives a softer look, and not as much contrast. But if you want it to look darker like the video, use 6G :)

So I just tried this and I have to admit even tho it looks SO easy I was terrified to try it. Like literally shaking but I pulled it together 😂 my hair is dark brown and I recently got a blonde balayage but it turned out so bad. pretty much all over blonde (yellow/orange) with dark roots. This video saved my life. I'm an already natural very very blond who went platinum just to get my new growth less ashy. Hair professionals couldn't get the root blending right after I was tired of bleaching... every ash color came out green or blue. I tried to fix it myself and my roots turned red with green ends. I was a Xmas decoration last December. So when I got that disaster cleared up, I actually toned first, then I used this technique with the lighter of the two colors she suggests. Thank you sooooooo much!!!! I just did this to my hair a few minutes ago, and even if it's not yet dry, I already love it!!! I had a weird and patchy root line and decided to try it. My application was a bit messy too but it turned out fine. I added a step though, after going through all your instructions, I went ahead and combed my hair (dragging the dye to the ends). And that for me really helped smudge and even out any line. I did that 10 mins before I rinsed. Thank you, thank you!

This worked perfect. I used 6N because my hair tends to lift to red regardless, and I'm glad I did. Applied a toner to my ends after the first process to remove some of the brassy tones in my highlights. I can now make my highlights last longer than 6-8 weeks and my pocketbook likes that. +Brittany Me a 7n with a 10 developer is what you'd need if you want it to look like hers. The higher the developer the more lift you'll get and since you already have the lightest level, you'll want to use a 10.

I just tried this today. My bleached hair is between an 8 and 9 level. I mixed 50/50 of 7.1 and 7.3 with 10 vol and got the most perfect shadow root I was after. Thank you so much, I would never have imagined I could have achieved this myself.

I followed this using a mix of a 6 (light brown) and an ashy 7 (dark blonde) with a 1:1 ratio. It came out perfect! I admit I'm horrible at sectioning off my hair and especially when the dye makes some of the strands stick together it becomes a mess. But this was not very hard and I did it all by myself this time. I got the perfect dark blonde color that's not too dark and I went from bleached blonde to a more natural and refreshed look...

This technique is beautiful! Did this on myself today; hair was bleached throughout very warm/yellow. Applied Wella 6/0 and strobed a few flickers through the underneath. Emulsified when rinsing, shampood and applied 10/16 10vol to ends for 10 mins. So natural looking and no lines at all!

Oh my lord, just did it and I freekin' love it! Previous color was a very light silverish blond but I have a pale skin so it was a little to much for me, no contrast at all. So for my roots i used 6N and for the rest SPN from Matrix SYNC, it's way more natural and I love it so much! Thank you Elle!

This is great, so perfect this is where I need to get to- I was doing your old technique of the highlift & then highlight but need a break. I'm pretty blonde - do you need to use 20 Vol? Or could a 10 work? I'm just worried as I tend to pull brassy. Could a 8A with a 10 vol work?

Hi Allison, I used 20V, I am grey on thee roots, The color I use I get off ebay, 8.65 Med chocolate blonde cendre, I love this color as I do not want to go to a 6. My issue is how to ad blonde band in when I need it , Any Ideas, The above can out great!!

I just have to say THANK YOU!!! You saved my hair. I'm a SAHM and don't color my hair often but with a big trip in a couple of weeks I went out on a limb and went to the salon for a pick-me-up. All I wanted was a reverse Balayage but walked out with chunky bright gold hair that looked like it was foiled in the early 2000's. Mega bummer!!! I had instant regret. Just did this today, right along side you! Turned out great!!! After spending $70 for balayage at salon, with no results afterward!! (the lady told me my natural blond roots wouldn't "take"... !??!) I did this myself, at home, for about $10 in products & 45 min of time. :) (And my roots "took" just fine, thank you very much!) My hair was really brassy on the top so I went with Demi permanent 6N instead of 6G. I used ion I follow the instructions which was 1-2 parts ratio with a 10v instead of 20 because I want my roots a bit darker. You do have to be careful not to get color on other areas of the hair wiping it off asap. Needless to say my hair came out beautiful some minor spots but all good! Thank you so much!

This tutorial was super helpful and my results are great! At the time of application my blonde was an 8G, but the centimeter of roots were extremely dark (asian hair). I used a 7G permanent color cream with a 30 developer mixed with a little 10 developer since I didn't have a 20. This created a nice light brown for the dark part of the contrast at the roots. After I did the application of the various sections diagonally I used a very wide toothed comb (do not use a fine toothed comb) to comb through my hair to soften and blend the color and then I let sit for about 20 minutes. The part that was already blonde took some of the color but not like I had feared when originally watching this tutorial. I think the combing was really important because it made sure there were no clumps of dye and everything just blended so nicely. I had one little mishap where I must have dripped a small bit of color on a part I wanted to leave alone, but it was close enough to the roots where I just added color after and it blended in fine - so be careful not to drip when applying. Otherwise this was fast, easy, and great results!!!

If you do this at home, please PLEASE use a wide tooth comb after applying the colour to soften the line. Or else it will be streaky and look terrible. Pick up your sections as you applied the colour and come from room outwards. Only just past where the tint/semi application ends (an inch or so out)

I always come back to this video because it has taught me how to do a perfect smudgy shadow root.. better than the salon I went to did. I used this video for YEARS when I was super blonde. But recently I had medium brown hair that had grown out/ faded to a light reddish brown and I wanted it darker but with a balayage to give my hair more dimension. Using this tutorial I used a medium cool brown and it came out perfect! My hair is darker like I wanted but I got to keep my lighter ends and its all blended beautifully. Also much better for my hair than dying it dark and then re-lightening the ends. Just thought I would share that this technique isnt just helpful for all over blondes and its applicable to really any time you have a lighter color and want to add some depth and variety of tone to your hair ❤ thank you so much for this video and helping me through the years no matter what color ive had 😅

I did this yesterday and yes it works! I was a little hesitant after reading some of the comments on here. I even bought and extra box of the color I was about to use so if it failed I could color my whole head of very long hair. I had previously used Age Perfect 9N with a 20 developer so I purchased Nice and Easy Light Ash Blond to do my roots with. I figured I can always go darker and I think I will next time, but I got to say the results were fabulous, Not a perfect looking Balayage but I am very happy with the results.. I think next time I will try using the Nice and Easy Ash Blond as it will give me more definition. thank you ellebangs, I will be following you from now on!

I can't thank you enough, I had my roots done last week, and I suggested a reverse balayage for low maintenance and the hairdresser left me with ugly horizontal lines with contrasting colours. I was able to fix it at home using your technique with a drugstore permanent color and it looks so much better and classier. I wish i could share the before and after here. Thanks!

I was reading through the comments before I did this technique at there are a lot of mixed reviews HOWEVER in my experience all I can say is Wow!!! This technique is so easy to do yourself, even if you have no experience! I've managed to get my hair to a light blonde (naturally dark brown) but was getting tired of keeping up the regrowth. I used a 6N which blended beautifully with my natural colour (already had some regrowth). For those worried about not going all the way down, I know she only shows to the ear, but when you part your hair just go a little further down. I also put the die in the t zone (front and middle sections of my hair). So happy with the result, thank you :) absolutely love all of your videos!!! Now I might go back and do a few highlights :)

I found this video just a couple days ago and I have no training but I was able to do this and I think my hair looks fabulous. My hair is shorter so it was little hard to do the back but I love how it turns out. My mid lengths and ends are a little darker than I expected but I think it should lighten and mostly it was so blonde and porous it sucked up the color. I’m so happy that this video is still available and will continue doing this process
