this is genius! I work in the cabinet industry and didn't think of using a drawer slide, maybe you can use two side by side drawer sides attached to a small pannel so it can be sturdy enough for a dslr

Genius. The best, cleanest, and most elegant DIY slider idea on youtube. I tip my hat to you good sir.

Finally someone who doesn't need to re-invent the wheel. Also DIY CNC machine parts shops online sell linear rails and bearings in all sorts of types that easily could be modified, tho maybe bit more expensive, maybe at times more than ready-made.

An ingenious use of existing technology. I've been looking for an inexpensive, portable slider that I can backpack. This looks like a winner.

Very creative use of the drawer slides, congratulations. For improvement suggestions. When using the flat head bolt screw, I would suggest using a "Countersink" drill bit to countersink the hole for the bolt head. This way you are not bending or compromising the drawer slider track in any way. A good countersink drill bit will allow you to countersink the edges of the hole where the bolt head goes, thus creating a lower profile that will allow for better clearance, and the head will not obstruct other moving parts of the drawer slide. I like this build very much and will try making one to your suggested specs, but will use a countersink to bore out and taper the hole where the 1/4" flat head bolt will rest for the ball joint, and for the quick release... good luck with your future endeavors, great ideas, and thanks...
@donovanvasquez58078 жыл бұрын
this would work if there was enough material. if you go too far the universal ball joint might not be able to go down full and then it wouldnt work. you might be able to add a few washers to create a tighter seal.

A rather inexpensive slider unit can come from your very own house... of course depending on whether or not you have a garage with a motorized garage door opener. I saved and salvaged my old garage door opener screw drive unit with the shuttle attachment. I modified the attachment and put a smaller, much quieter motor on it. I did have to modify the clutch for the screw drive, but it works perfectly, albeit a tad noisy. But, I can take this unit and do parallel pans and sweeps and add vertical motions when standing it on end. I am figuring a way to ad it to my lighting tripod base so that I can raise and lower the track to higher or lower planes when doing up and down motions... It's still a bit rough, but shows a lot of promise. The slider works very well and very smoothly because of the machined screw drive and the garage door shuttle. Thanks for sharing your build.

@autumngreenleaf339010 жыл бұрын
Good idea. I like it. One part that I would change is to use button head screws, since the flat heads you are using don't sit flush with the drawer slide. They are used with a tapered hole which allows them to sit flush and be stabilized from sitting in the tapered shaped wall of the hole. Since you can't make that happen with the drawer slide, the button head may sit lower since the head height may be shorter overall. this is not to be said to insult you but to give viewers an option. Cheers.

Great execution. You need a bulky tripod, this slider is heavy! With the right planning, you could finish the whole thing in 5 minutes, but it didn't work that way for me. Button head screws were far too tall for my slider. Tapered with a larger hole (so it sits deeper) is definitely the way to go. I only have about 2mm clearance. My cheap tripod doesn't have a quick release, so bolting directly to the tripod caused interference as well (tripod bolt too long).. so I need to make my own plate with the small screws in the video, then mount that to the tripod. I'm also getting grinding since the slider is flat whereas with a drawer it would be rotated 90 degrees. All depends on the slider you buy though. Probably need some extra bearing grease.
@speterlewis6 жыл бұрын
Simply brilliant...bravo! I wonder how easy it would be to motorize this. Any ideas?
@ricardoabreu49975 жыл бұрын
Attach the slanted slider attached to the tripod so it does not move. The ends of the removable part are attached to two small bottles of water. the bottom bottle carries a hole in the bottom and ends up rising due to the weight of the full bottle. The camera attached to the slider moves in the direction of the descending bottle

I just took one slider to see how it's working and the only problem with this ball bearing drawer sliders it's they don't slide constantly. Maybe you can lube it and that might work. Or any other ideeas ?

you could use a PTFE spray on the tracks to lubricate it, or some graphite powder

Really silly question, but the test footage at the end... how did he do it vertically, and are the videos reversed?
@donovanvasquez58078 жыл бұрын
he just used the trip od angle one side really low and the other higher. I would pull on it or let it slide down by itself then reverse the footage.

How did you attach it to a tripod?
@SteedDigital18 жыл бұрын
the quick release he showed. if you don't have that I guess you could buy a nut that fits the threads on the tripod. then sit the slider on the tripod and just use the nut and a washer to hold it there. make sure that is tight though.
