For the grain filler, not sure if it works for cherry, but an old trick I learned from my grandfather when working with walnut, if you "wet sand" the wood with a finishing oil, the oil and sanding dust packs into the pores of the grain and then hardens to make a smooth surface. Takes a bit of time, but you are always guaranteed to get a good color match and smooth finish.

Not just voodoo making everything prefect. I thought it was a good blend of learning from your mistakes and completing a pair of really cool projects. Thanks.

@Ramonzeira there are several pre-made kits, which include pre-formed body, complete neck etc. You'd just need to finish the body and use basic tools to assemble. The issue could be to connect the electronics (involves soldering), but maybe you can get a pre-soldered electronics kit? Hope this helps.

I'm with you on the feel of a Bigsby - I love the feel of a big, hefty chunk of machinery that produces such a delicate and subtle effect. I'd take them (with their tuning instability) over a Floyd Rose any day. Really enjoyed this video (and the series as a whole). I watch a lot of luthiery videos and this was quite refreshingly different - quite interesting seeing the thought process of a competent maker in a relatively new arena. I've also now added a Starcaster to my list of hypothetic guitar builds (I'm part way through my first).

In terms of finishing, if you want a smooth gloss finish. The typical method (after prepping the wood) is to use a sanding sealer first, grain fill, seal again. Repeat 2 times, or as necessary. Once you’ve built up a good layer of sealer over the last grain fill session, sand it smooth. You want the sealer to be thick enough to sand flat without going through to wood. Sanded with 400,or 600 grit. Then you apply color(if doing color), then clear coats. You want the surface as smooth as possible before you lay down your clear. Makes for a better finish. Because you don’t want to have to do much wet sanding to your final clear with poly. Witness lines may occur if sanded through the top coat.

Thanks, that was really interesting. Just a note about Bob's guitar, typically with the type of bridge he has used the neck would have to be angled relative to the body rather than flat to it. If you were to do that you might find it became even more playable :)

I liked this "In-depth"-Episode a lot. I build guitars for almost 20 years, for myself. The important thing is good planning beforehand imho. I never used CAD or CNC software for guitarbuilding(i did my planning always on paper), but maybe it would be a good thing to plan the guitar in fusion and build it with handtools. Some stuff on Bobs guitar would be different i guess with this method(like the neck pu box in the carved area). Btw. question for Bob: is the PU-Switch intentionally mounted backwards? Love you guys.

Is there any concern about movement in the custom-cut bass neck? Not trying to be a wood movement concern troll I just have seen luthiers that put rough cut necks aside for months before use and am curious if there's a way to avoid the wait.

Ya know, it's not that hard to shave down the back of the neck and that arm bevel/scallop on the bass. That would make it quite a bit nicer for you to play. And yes, having all the right tools and bits makes it a LOT easier. I have it to the point I have one router dedicated to routing holes in bodies- whether pickup routs or chambers, another dedicated to rounding the edges, another router set in my router table primarily for routing the slot in the neck for truss rods, and yet another for miscellaneous random other stuff.
